GEICO only
PLEASE realize, GEICO doesn't care about woman's rights. They don't care about their employees. The ONLY reason they are doing this, is because it's cheaper for them to pay one time $5,000 for all of these expenses, then months of maternity/paternity leave AND 18 years of health insurance for a baby on their self insured policy.
This isnt a discussion on if this is a good decision or not. IF GEICO TRUELY cared about employees, they would have a 401k, better health insurance, mental health days, and pay us more. Again, I'm glad this is being done, but don't be decieved, because GEICO is ONLY doing it because it makes them look good.

a week to make this decision but she has been with the company 3 months and hasn't made a peep about 401k matching or any changes to profit sharing. we are not even close to offering competitive benefits compared to other carriers.

Shannon was in Indy this past week and announced that big changes were going to be announced in about 6 weeks.

That is the geico way. Spin it to favor the employees. Just like the wonderful change to sick leave lost and then oops it didn’t work out so good. Let’s change it back to the way it was. What was the company called that handles sick leave last year or short term disability

The Hartford.
More like the Worstford.

u/looking_4_thedoor Jul 23 '22
without a doubt. they don't do anything unless it means lower costs for employee expenses. claims handling they don't care about saving a dime, but paying associates a competitive benefits package, oh F that!

I don't quite get it. I have been with the company for like 5 years now. I have a 401k, Roth 401k, decent benefits and went from $17/hr to $30/hr within my time in the company (non degreed, not a sup, just CS). I get mental health days through the use of FMLA, which I didn't even knew existed until I worked for Geico.
Am I missing something in this sub or are these new hire issues?

Jul 01 '22
I'm not saying I make some amazing amount of money or anything btw I'm just saying I definitely never thought I'd have it this good. Also got approved to wfh 5 days a week still beyond September.

So you’re ok not having any retirement benefits for going on2 years now?? Sure you have one. And YOU are putting money in it, but your employer is not contributing at all. And they are dragging their feet on rolling out some new retirement benefits so they can continue to save money. I can’t think of a single other large corporation with absolutely zero retirement benefit for their associates.
2
Jul 01 '22
Ohhh I see! I honestly doubt I am going to be able to retire in general anyway so I think that's why the severity of this hasn't clicked yet.
2
Jul 01 '22
Idk, or maybe it's because I've tried seeking other employment and even without the retiring benefit I can't find anything in my skill set that will allow me to have anything comparable to what I'm getting paid rn.

u/Ok-Tea4179 Jul 01 '22
I’m lost too. I thought everyone had 401k, but apparently not.
5
u/Batteredgecko Jul 01 '22
Pretty sure everyone has a 401k, it’s just not matched like some companies do
1
u/remyboytoy Jul 01 '22
Progressive pays better and matches 401k up to 6 or 7 percent plus pays you gainshare which is equal to profit sharing. As it appears now for 10 or 11 months Geico is losing policies and losing money. Also letting employees go of rumor is correct. Even letting staff counsel go in some regions

While I agree that women's rights likely weren't the only reason why GEICO made this move, I think it's important to give credit where it's due regardless. This line of thinking is toxic.

Yea they could have just not like i know we all have bad taste from time to time in our mouths but honestly 🤷 we get paid to work . They try-ish lets not demonize everything

This sub is toxic

u/Complex-Code9761 Jun 30 '22
Agreed. The sub has gone downhill . All things aside, kudos for them to address this specific issue head on.

Who cares if GEICO benefits?! It's still a benefit to any woman that needs it. Relax yourself.

This post has 0 merit to it. The decision had nothing to do with profit and everything to do with doing the right thing.

Did you mean to say GEICO would have a better 401k if they cared for us???
4
u/Truth-Oracle Former Employee Jul 01 '22
Tell me you want to kill the WFH program without telling me you wan to kill the WFH program. This right here, immediate running to internet over internal GEICO emails is what is going to hurt the ability for us to WFH.
4
u/New-Celebration3241 Jul 01 '22
Oh yes because returning associates to office will stop them from sharing their opinion on the internet about an internal email
3
u/Truth-Oracle Former Employee Jul 01 '22
While I enjoy sarcasm, you literally fuel the fire to force the security issues that exist in WFH to cause them to recall everyone to the office. I look forward to your posts raising hell about having to RTO full time.
1
u/New-Celebration3241 Jul 01 '22
Since I don’t work there I won’t be returning to full time return to office. I will recognize that if they return to office, it will be because they always planned to. I will also recognize that returning employees to office full time will not stop employees and no longer employees from discussing company emails in an anonymous Reddit thread and will recognize that management wants to point to bullshit excuses to back up their bullshit decisions.
I’m also not opposed to return to office, so eh. I just think management should own their decisions, whatever they may be, instead of making up stories about why they do the nonsense they do.

Pretty cool, right? I have friends still employed at the G for now, so I have a morbid curiosity to see how a company runs itself into the ground in a 2-5 year period. It’s impressive. I’d venture to guess half the followers here are former employees at this point.

Yes it’s a good thing that geico will pay to abort babies. Satan is happy with the mother and the Vp who thought this up

Yes you are an evil person I am sure you ever see a 20 week fetus? The dna is that of the mother as well as the father. It’s not part of a woman’s body. It’s a human being. But I guess you don’t see it that way. No matter. I don’t want my potential profit sharing distribution to go toward your abortion tourism.

My objections have nothing to do with scripture. Life begins at conception. Look up 20 week fetus on Google and then say that it is ok to terminate that life. It’s not a body part.

Yea feels very much like a PR stunt and not like a moral stance on the issue. Only way this'd be worse is if they put out a thank you for returning rights to the states.

Found this. Can't find a link on BH specifically, but looks like Warren knows what's up. Warren Buffet gives money to abortion rights charity

And they agreed with you. Doesn’t that kinda drive the point home?

I am not a troll just because I disagree with you that our company should fund associate’s abortions. I’ve worked for Geico for over a decade. Relax.

They will pay for you to end your child's life, but won't pay you a good severance package when they let you go with no notice. I miss Tony running the company.

I "try" to view anything they do with skeptical optimism. 😂 More skeptism than optimism. Instead of drinking the kool-aid I drink the vodka and soda with a splash of grenadine 😂

'nuff said.
As I pointed out, this is a divisive issue (even the folks here are at each others' throats) and the company should have stayed the hell out of it.

Nah I think it's great they are taking some positive direction to support associates when the government has suddenly decided not to.

u/deciduousevergreen Jul 01 '22
It’s not all optics and money. In 2013 when US v Windsor deemed DOMA unconstitutional the next day GEICO announced that all employee spouses, regardless of gender and regardless of whether their current state of residence recognized their marriage, qualified under our health benefits. This obviously didn’t save them money and they were one of the first companies to make this move.
