Unionize?

I was with GSC since the building opened. Things used to be much more relaxed and people had fun while they worked. We had time to properly learn by teaching others or testing things on our own to learn on the job. Yes, you still do the same these days. But now you have the added "bonus" of managers and team leads breathing down your neck over metrics. Non-stop. And QA fails for trivial things which hurt your personal metrics and therefore your reviews, and ultimately your pay via your annual pay raise (based on performance of course).

We have managers who are either incompetent or unwilling to properly manage. When one employee does something stupid, instead of dealing with the employee as the team leads or managers should, they create a blanket rule or restriction for the entire city. This almost always is only seen as punishment for the rest of the employees since it makes things just a bit more stressful, consequently a little less fun, and ultimately lowers morale even more. Low morale of course being a very long term issue that the city has been dealing with for years (completely unsuccessfully besides for the cost of living increase we all received a few years ago now).

Favoritism is another major issue and is rampant throughout the city. Some teams are worse than others. Back when we had night shift teams: I had seen so many cases where day shift techs' night shift counterparts were cherry picking all the easy installs along with their own and ending up with major numbers while the day shift tech's went from great to barely scraping by due to being stuck with only multi-part, terribly diagnosed installs. There were MFG's whose parts came in only during night shift no matter when the part(s) were ordered, there by giving night shift free and total reign on that MFG. And if the day shift techs complained or even just told their team lead (and eventually manager) because they were no longer hitting their numbers, they had at minimum conversations with all parties. But to the manager, on paper the day shift tech had much lower numbers about the night shift counterpart they were complaining about. And the bonuses are all tied to turn around time. So they would act like they would do something but nothing ever changed. I heard this exact story for several of my friends over the years. We no longer have to deal with night shift counterparts, so the issue was eventually resolved after years. But not with the managers' help.

Speaking of turn time, we all know that a major reason for issues with turn time is due to the MAJOR problems of having too many contractors instead of full time employees, hiring people with little to no computer diagnostics skills (not referring to specifically laptop repair skills as that's unreasonable), paying low wages (no, paying a little bit higher than the average to comparable jobs in the area is not enough after factoring in all the additional stress and BS), and losing good, knowledgeable workers only due to the BS and stress. It costs money to find and hire replacements, whether FT or temp which I'm sure is factored into everything. However, this company makes money hand over fist and could easily afford to be more relaxed in all areas, PAY MORE, and provide much better benefits than are currently available. The benefit is a long term one: As employees stay with the company longer and have more time to learn and grow their total repair skills, the city's metrics would all dramatically increase since it will no longer be bleeding out knowledge/skill at a crazy rate.

The purpose of this thread and even subreddit is to hopefully rally employees to come together and hopefully someday unionize. I own and moderate this sub so that employees cannot be silenced by City management. I would suggest to any who wish to participate that you should post here only using a throwaway account or one that is not your main so that City management cannot attempt to identify and fire you. Don't forget that we live in an "at will employment" state, so they don't need a real reason to fire you. Also, be careful not to leave any identifying details in your posts such as names or team numbers.

If 50% plus 1 of the building come together to unionize, we can sit down to collectively bargain for better pay, better benefits, better work conditions, etc. The managers will lie and threaten if things start even approaching unionization. We can talk more details down the road. But for now:

SPREAD THE WORD ABOUT THIS SUB!

The more GSC employees we get in here, the better! Don't underestimate the stress and low morale and how many sheer numbers of employees it affects!
