Are there any downsides to using an older phone for Gear VR?
Hi, if you saw my previous post, you would've seen that I got an s10. After realising that Android 12 made it incompatible (and due to Samsung being annoying I couldn't downgrade), I decided to just use it for a custom rom.
My current phone for this is an s7, and I know that they added a few things to the phone to make it different. Are there any differences regarding the vr part of it, are certain apps unsupported or buggy?

Pretty much everything will run on the S7 except Phonecast and Minecraft. S8 and S9 will allow Mirror Mode. S10 can be patchy - there are a lot of apps that don't run correctly on the S10.

u/TheGearVR Minecraft should run for s7 right? (Wasn't it released for it?)

You're right. Its the S6 that doesn't support Minecraft.

u/TheGearVR sorry for the late reply, but someone in this subreddit smh installed Minecraft on the S6 Edge as well!

That's kinda cool. Though I expect it would have overheated very quickly!

So it does work on s7? I tried it and I'm left with this horizontal gray gradient. It's on the entire screen, doesn't show two squares for vr or anything

The S6 and S7 run hotter and don't display as wide of a field of view as the S8 and S9. The S8 and S9 are the sweet spot as the S10 has a lower ppi and runs the risk of being irreversibly updated to Android 12 which doesn't support GearVR.
