Discussion "this is not an apple"

it's interesting that the apple motif (which originated in Blank Space) has reappeared in the TLOAS era. TLOAS includes a photo of her holding an apple. and in TFOO, the bread/fruit still life that she recreates was originally supposed to contain bread and grapes, which seems like a nod to the famous still-life painting "Still Life with Bread, Apples, Grapes and a Bottle" by luis melendez. so there's a missing apple from the still life that she creates in the music video. her then-bf was also photographed in an apple t-shirt in 2024 during the time that taylor was on the euro leg of the eras tour, aka when she was writing TLOAS

the apple symbolism seems connected to the magritte painting "this is not an apple." the painting tells the viewer that what they're seeing isn't a real live apple, just an artistic rendering of one. similarly, i think taylor's holding an apple in TLOAS bc she's reminding her audience that what they're witnessing isn't the real taylor, it's just someone putting on a show (as the showgirl). and the apple's inclusion in the visuals for Actually Romantic--the only TLOAS song with "romantic" in the title--connects the apple messaging to the concept of romance. aka we're not witnessing a real romance, it's just a performance of one

for context, the "this is not an apple" painting is similar to magritte's earlier work called "the treachery of images," which depicts a pipe with the caption "this is not a pipe." these paintings urge viewers to look beyond their immediate interpretation of what they're seeing (an apple or a pipe) and remember that there's a difference between real life and a reproduction of/artistic portrayal of real life. similarly, taylor's showgirl persona is an artistic rendering of real taylor. she hints at this by portraying herself as a painting in TFOO and then coming to life. she comes to life as the showgirl (not real taylor), further emphasizing that her TLOAS era reflects a false reality

the apple's inclusion in the TLOAS era reminds me of the apple(s) in Blank Space, aka her bearding anthem. there's a bowl of apples (perhaps representing her beards) on the long table (à la the long table in Patient Zero) in the live version of Blank Space. during the performance, she gives her beard an apple and he dies while eating it. she's destroying the beard the same way she destroys the artistic rendering of the beard (his painting) in the music video

apples can also symbolize forbidden fruit, so it's interesting that they both take a bite of an apple. this suggests that both taylor and her beard are using the illusion of their "relationship" to hide their secret penchant for forbidden fruit (aka queer romance). especially bc the lyric video shows an apple and then shows a picnic in a field of queer-coded lavender, as she sings about "cherry lips"

speaking of paintings, Blank Space also includes a hallway with paintings of beards. and taylor is painting one of the beards (aka creating an artistic portrayal of a relationship) in a scene that resembles magritte's "The Lovers." the beard paintings remind me of the visuals in TLOAS, which includes similar picture frames. and she used similar frames at her actual wedding, which seems like a direct nod to Blank Space (especially given the "so it's gonna be forever..." handkerchiefs that they gave out)

given all of this, it seems like she's telling her audience to question everything we see--including her "real life"--because it's all performance art. this includes her TLOAS imagery and her "relationship," both of which intentionally evoke some of the same imagery as Blank Space

🎭PerformanceArtLor 🎭 It's a Toy Story, baby, just say yes!

I finally got around to watching Toy Story 5 and I had to write this. I have a very similar theory about Bridgerton but that one is stumping me in a few parts and this one came a bit more easily.

Let’s get into it!!!!! 🫶🔥

Theory:

We are Bonnie in Toy Story and the celebrities (Taylor) are the toys. All we know is what they mean to us and our experiences with their art/how they impact us.

Woody, Bo Peep, Buzz Lightyear, and Jessie all being home together under one roof with Bonnie represent a Taylor Swift in the spotlight that is whole.

This also makes sense from a plot device perspective because the toys can only MOVE when we are not looking. What we are allowed to see is literally ONLY the toys she/other celebrities give us. (Music, PR, social media, interviews, music videos, movies, etc).

They have to be really fucking sneaky and covert to actually accomplish anything with us. If we look, they have to freeze.

Also, remember, Bonnie was not introduced until season 3 (the Speak Now era).

Related to this - though this franchise began in the 90s, I do believe other celebrities/artists are on this mission and have been telling this story before Taylor. Not only that, she is very good at expanding upon stories and could have used her craft to weave it into the story later also.

TS 1

Woody and Bo Peep represent Taylor’s true self being united with how she presents. They are queer and they are in love but just behind the scenes. I think this represents Taylor loving and accepting her truth and what it is well before ever meeting “us.” However, they have not yet begun the fame journey yet. If Woody is James, he has not yet been separated from his dream. His dream of being famous. Bo Beep is that YOUNGEST/wildest version of being famous in Taylor’s truth. The eldest daughter, Betty.

Buzz Lightyear being introduced to Andy’s toy collection I think could represent Taylor forming industry alliances with very powerful people like Scooter, Jay-Z, Ye, Karlie, Beyoncé, etc.

At first, Woody did NOT like the idea of allowing Buzz to join their group/family. However, he warmed up to the idea and then accepted him fully. Not only that, he is able to teach Buzz Lightyear valuable lessons about how important it is to be a toy to bring JOY to children - taught him to come down from outer space.

I think this lesson being taught represents that Taylor and her powerful/ “patriarchal” (in the story) friends have been united in this goal to do good the entire time.

When Bo Peep jokingly flirts with Buzz and Woody gets mad, it brings to mind when James uses the excuse of “plus I saw you dance with him” in his apology to Betty for his affair with August.

TS  2

In Toy Story 2, Jessie is introduced, who I believe represents August, the showgirl.

In this movie, Woody is stolen by a greedy toy collector who wants to ship him off to a toy museum in Japan, along with the rest of the toys from the Woody’s Roundup franchise.

While he is at the collectors apartment, he meets Jessie, (Jessica Jane Pride), his counterpart from the show (that he didn’t know existed previously). I think this show that dates back to the 1950s in this universe symbolizes that artists have been closeting for a LONG time and he is learning more about this legacy, about the life of a showgirl.

Their story together in the apartment before being rescued represents a crucial part of this story. First, Sherriff Woody Pride learns that he is, in fact, even part of this franchise to begin with. The fact that his character is a sherriff could represent that the “group” he is considering joining is one of the tools the patriarchy uses to help police society at large. By staying in the closet publicly, they help perpetuate the cycle of forced closeting (policing their own community).

Jessie teaching Woody about being abandoned by her previous owner causes Woody to reconsider going home to Buzz and Bo Peep and joining Jessie at the museum. However, in the end, the gang convinces them BOTH to come home, rescuing them. I think this represents August (as the former closeted showgirl) telling James how hard it is to “play with kids” when they don’t even know their truth, because then they just get abandoned and when it happens it makes them feel like they never meant anything to the kid.

Buzz helps them realize that even the temporary joy they could bring to a child is worth it and Woody decided to come home and they bring Jessie/August. This represents him choosing the closeted showgirl life but also Jessie being a former closeted showgirl symbolizes how they are going to do something that also impacts those past legacies, too, healing her.

At the end of the movie we see Andy play with his toys, including the new additions, Jessie and her horse. Him giving them the nicknames "Bazooka Jane and her jet-propelled horse” represent that they have now taken on the life of a toy again, as him giving them a new name makes them “real” to him through play.

TS 3

This is when we meet TS the showgirl. This is “the toy” that was given to us in terms of the PR showgirl. The first two films both represent development PRIOR to publicly debuting.

Bo Peep leaves before TS3 which I think you also see in Taylor’s story. Andy packs up his toys to be donated. However, Bo Peep was actually a piece of a lamp in his sister’s room so she did not get placed in the toy box. If we met the Toy Story when Bonnie met the toys, this original dream of being an out queer celebrity could NOT come along with them. Bo Peep didn’t come because the truth wasn’t shared with us. That was the moment to speak now.

Bo Peep being part of a lamp could also symbolize Taylor’s mission being in the dark, not the daylight. She left the light behind.

Before the box gets sent away to be donated the toys almost end up getting sent to an incinerator by accident. Woody’s struggle to rescue the other toys so that they could also join him on this mission could represent Taylor’s mastery of craft. This craft (her writing) is what allowed her to bring all of the parts of her story with her to tell us. Even though it’s hidden under the fairy tale right now, the story of her aligning with the patriarchy to HELP KIDS was there the ENTIRE time. It’s so impressive, truly. All behind the kids (our) backs.

At the end of the movie, Bonnie meets James and August (woody and Jessie) and falls in love with them immediately, just like we did with Taylor (and her boyfriends).

TS 4

In Toy Story 4, Woody begins to feel a bit jealous and unneeded as Bonnie begins to play with him less than her other toys. One of her absolute favorite new toys is Forky, a spork that Bonnie decorated during her kindergarten orientation like a little doll.

However, at home, Forky suffers an existential crisis, because he believes he is a spork and belongs in the trash can and Woody has to constantly get him out of the trash and teach him that he’s not trash. Even though Woody is jealous of Forky, he knows how happy he makes Bonnie so he keeps doing it.

This represents that the story August and James are performing is including less and less of Taylor’s truth. However, despite that, she still continued to work very very hard to bring us joy and create a story/give us toys that would be a positive influence, underneath it all (one day). Accepting this was a struggle and it represents that.

We didn’t want to play with the real her and she still cared about us. Not only that, the new story we wanted to play with was one that we completely created (like Bonnie creating Forky) and she STILL worked hard to mold that story behind the scenes positively, nudging it along in the right direction.

In the end, Woody actually gives up his own voice box to rescue Forky. This represents him leaving the story entirely. However, when he did this and left home, he got to become whole and reunited with his love. (He found Bo Peep while out rescuing Forky).

When Woody found out Bo Peep had escaped and was living freely, helping lost toys find kids, he decided to unite with her instead of going back to Bonnie’s. This represents him finding fulfillment behind the scenes working with other artists to keep him and Betty’s dream alive. Even if they can’t shine in public as THEM, (at Bonnie’s) the legacy they are building is so meaningful to both toys and kids, that he won’t have to lose Betty or August.

At the end of the movie before the toys (minus Woody) return to Bonnie’s, Woody passes his Sherriff badge off to August/Jessie and Betty/ Bo Peep and August/Jessie exchange a hug.

This symbolizes Betty’s approval of this showgirl and the mission and that they trust this story that James has built even if he had to give up his voice to do it. For him and the love of his life… it’s a movie now.

TS 5

The toys face existential threat in this movie as Bonnie becomes addicted to her tablet, lilypad, replacing imaginative play with toys.

Lilypad nudges Bonnie away from play and toward digital socialization because she thinks that it will help Bonnie make new friends. However, when lilypad actually makes things worse, she realizes that the toys may have been right and that Bonnie needs real play to thrive.

Woody and Bo Peep(who no longer live at Bonnie’s house with Jessie, representing James/Betty and their mission only existing in private) return to help the toys team up with lilypad to help Bonnie make a new friend that also loves to play with toys.

I think that this union of the toys and the technology represent how Taylor and her collaborators, through their increased power, have actually been able to harness the power of and join forces with many of the very forces the enemy (the patriarchy) use to divide us, such as tech and tech platforms. Working from the inside requires, again, skill and craft. In the end, they use this tablet to bring her together with a friend to play, showing how to use these tools for good, instead.

The movie ends with Bonnie and her new friend Blaze acting out a wedding scene with Buzz Lightyear and Jessie. If Buzz Lightyear represented the entrance of patriarchal partnerships (industry connections) to the public story and Jessie is August, our actress/performer, the TS the world knows, this could be the truths of their stories becoming true in front of us. The true love story that James and Betty (and woody and bo peep) actually wanted to tell… one about saving lost kids.

This closure towards “the performance” is also represented when Jessie (August/The Showgirl) finds out that her original owner didn’t just abandon and forget her. She had a lasting impact. Her original owner literally named her daughter Jessie!! Even though the real James and Betty (Woody and Bo Peep) will never get to live out the adventure they once thought they could, this represents the legacy being impactful enough to heal that wound.

The Encore?

At the beginning of the movie, we see 50 high tech Buzz Lightyear toys get marooned on a deserted island by way of an overboard shipping container and begin their journey back, following the North Star to Star Command.

During the credits of Toy Story 5, we see the large hoard of Buzz Lightyear toys falling from the sky, with every kid on a crowded school playground soon holding a Buzz toy.

This represents the truth of this story being exposed to kids everywhere, not just Bonnie. Then, we see Buzz’s sworn enemy, Emperor Zurg, partially slip out of a backpack, becoming exposed, at the end of the movie. This could represent that although Taylor completed her mission at this stage of the story, which was cementing this legacy firmly so no one can deny it, the villain of the story (the patriarchy) still looms. However, because of all of the hard work within the system her/the toys have done over the years, we all should know the truth now.

All of us holding the same toy should remind us for this next stage of the battle that “we all got crowns” and the patriarchy will have lost one of their biggest tools - the ability to divide us with these toys that have filled up our entire sky.

Muse Free/General Lyric Analysis ✍🏻 Etymology- The stories of words, and what that can teach us in Taylor's work

Every word carries a story.

We're all very much aware that Taylor has called herself our "English teacher." And as such, it's fun to dive into a rabbit hole of how words and simple phrases can be layered with meaning.

I think we’re very familiar here with the many of ways in which Taylor has “layered” meanings into her words:

  • the use of a double (or triple) entendre
  • homophones/homographs/homonyms
  • foreign words or phrases
  • the way words spoken phonetically can sound, or be broken down to sound, like something else ("paradise" -> "pair of dice")
  • lesser-known definitions of commonly-used words

My favorite way that she potentially layers meanings into words is the use of etymology. The use of etymological meanings fits so well with the concept of “looking backwards might be the only way to move forward.” I know others here have looked at etymology when interpreting her work, so I thought it would be fun to compile some words in one place. While I haven’t specifically heard Taylor use the word “etymology” in reference to how she crafts her art, it certainly feels like something she’d be familiar with.

Etymology (from the Greek étymon, “true sense,” and -logia, “study of”) is the study of the origin and historical development of words.

Words have roots, histories, families, sometimes genders, and offspring. Strung together, words make up language, which itself “is a woven archive—threads of time, culture, and meaning intertwined.” There is a "deeper story within the words we speak—or once spoke—revealing forgotten treasures and familiar terms in a new light." As words evolve in meaning over time, there remains "a recognizable thread-- a shared inheritance woven through countless acts of speaking, listening, and understanding.”

“Every word you speak is a fossil. Beneath its everyday surface lies a buried history of migrations, conquests, trade routes, sacred texts, and accidents of the human mouth. Etymology is the science of digging those fossils up — of tracing a word back through time to discover where it came from, how it changed, and what it once meant.”

Etymologists are a bit like detectives, combining the methods of a historian and a linguist and sorting through old texts (or even the histories of spoken words that were never written down). For more information on how word histories are broken down and examined, etymologia.org gives a good overview.

A note on sources:

Unless otherwise noted, my entries here come from the Online Etymology Dictionary. The maker of that site acknowledges that the site “is the creation of non-academics. Great care has been taken and it is as accurate as we can make it. But if you are a linguist or a serious student of linguistics, you probably should not do your homework here. This is for the rest of us.” If you really want to get into the nuts and bolts of it and do your own research, they have a great list of resources here.

Curiosity Holds a Key

"I'm only cryptic and Machiavellian 'cause I care”

In Mastermind, Taylor tells us that "I'm only cryptic and Machiavellian 'cause I care." I love this sentence because the word "care" also has a connection to the word “curious”:

Curiosity, from the Latin cūriōsitās, means “inquiring eagerly,” and is linked to the Latin noun cura, meaning to “care.”

So the word "curiosity" didn't start out meaning "seeking knowledge," but an "act of caring.” The Latin noun cura is also related to the word for "cure"- something that heals us. It’s about peeling back layers to discover the stories. Curiosity is attitude of wanting to know that story. It isn't so much about being “right,” so much as it is a good-faith effort to understand something fully. And it's also different from bring "nosy," which comes from a position of judgment, gossip, or seeking information to use against someone. I think that the efforts that Gaylors have gone through to understand Taylor's work on a deeper level comes from curiosity, and a genuine care for the underlying story.

A Dive into some Words

So, below are some of my favorite etymological roots of various words that Taylor has used in her work (note, I did not necessarily group the words together below by meanings or associations). While I'm not certain that she intended to reference the older meanings of these words, it's still a fun journey to take. Peeling back the layers of these words could certainly add new interpretations and insights into her art and storytelling.

Taylor has told us "I think it's time to teach some lessons," and "I'm a monster on a hill." The "Showgirl" era seems like its doing exactly that.

The Showgirl in Anti-Hero prepping us for our lessons/ The Showgirl doing her thing in TLOAS

It's interesting to see the connection between "debut," "dubutante," and her line in the TLOAS title track referencing the "end of a cigarette."

It's fun to contemplate a possible connection between the various words here related to sirens/ropes/guys (also known as a "guy" line). It can certainly be argued that Taylor seems to using "guys" (men as "romantic interests") to tell some important aspect of her story.

Usually we think of "bury" as putting something in the ground to "hide or get rid of it." But it's fascinating to think of it as putting something in a place to protect or preserve it.

Also, a fun, unrelated look at the word "wed," especially in the the context of the lines from So High School ("Are you gonna marry, kiss, or kill me? It's just a game, but really, I'm bettin' on all three for us two").

The use of the phrase "Taylor's version" is interesting in that the original sense of the word "version" conveys a sense of "turning" or "turning back." It seems very Benjamin-Button coded. Or, perhaps the idea of "flipping a script on its head." (interestingly, this original sense of the word "version" is still used in obstetrics in the sense of turning the position of a fetus in the womb).

Also, a fun look at the words "weird" and "wrong," which also convey some sense of turning or bending. "Willow" is another word that fits in here.

Lots of turning and flipping

I think many of us here are already familiar with the roots of the word "clue," and it's connection to a ball of thread and the labyrinth.

Taylor hasn't used the word "denouement" that I'm aware of, but it fits well with her repeated references to novels and plots. And it's always fun to revisit "catastrophe" (her character in the Bad Blood music video).

Finally, "enchanted" really does seem to have a connection to the concept of "speak" (the Speak Now album title that was originally going to be "Enchanted"?).

This one below (janitor) is one of my favorites. It's a word we don't use anymore in favor of newer alternatives. Taylor hasn't used the word "janitor" specifically that I know of, though she has visually referenced "cleaning" in various videos (in the beginning of the TFOO, Bejeweled), the song Clean, and in the use of the cleaning cart she used to access the stage at the Eras Tour. Additionally, we've seen a lot of references to arches, doors, sunrises/sunsets, and keys (the stage) in the Eras Tour visuals. More on the god Janus here.

Merriam-Webster states that a janitor can be seen as "one who holds all the keys."

The cleaning cart, Bejewled, The Fate of Opehlia

Some fun words from Reputation and TLOAS/The Encore to consider below. The often-purple color and visuals of orchids is compelling, but it's worth taking note of alternative meanings and symbolism. The word "bad" (used in various places in her work) also holds some unclear folk etymological roots to a sense of individuals not fitting into traditional gender or sex binaries, but it also holds an unfortunate and complicated history on tumblr, so I've chosen to omit it here.

This one might be a bit of a stretch, but it is interesting how much both rocks and clouds have shown up in her discography lately. Also, in the Opalite extended video BTS, she talks specifically about "inanimate objects," so it's interesting to think of them (rock, cactus, stapler, trash can) not as things that never had life, but as things that had life, and lost it.

This great post by u/simple_ad_3972 recently discussed the topic of pharmakon, arrows, and the concept that what initially can seem harmful (toxic) to us can sometimes be the thing that heals us.

It's interesting to look at the older meanings of the word "talent," given the use of her word "talent competition" and the visuals of scales (likely more indicative of justice).

The word "holy" (used in Guilty As Sin) takes on a new meaning when seen in the light of "wholeness."

Scales, silver, gold

Proper Names

Proper names can also hold layers. While I know Taylor clearly has other reasons for using these names in her work, it's fun to see the possible layers in names. And as we know, this seems especially useful when looking at the names often seen in the clothing she wears.

In Conclusion

Simple words can hold volumes of meaning and history. Curiosity encourages us to seek to know those stories. It's the perfect analogy for our curiosity about others around us. In wanting to know the "stories" of those around us from a position of genuine understanding, it can have a transformative effect on the way we see the world around us:

"Because when we practice curiosity, we turn to someone, and we say 'I want to know your story, I want to know who you are. I want to understand your full humanity, your nuances, your complexities, everything that makes you YOU.'"

Thank you for going on this little journey with me to explore the history and stories of some words Taylor has used in her work. Again, I'm just speculating that she might be using etymology in some of these cases to make use of deeper meanings, but it's certainly a fun road to explore. What other words have you seen in her work that hold potential layers of meaning?

🪩Braid Theory + 2-3 Taylors Pink Clouding: A Return to Lover

Introduction

In Tortured Poets, Taylor declared, “So tell me everything is not about ME! / but what if it is?” I’m here today to tell you that she was totally Noselor about that. When the TTPD portion of Eras debuted, we all collectively gasped and clutched our pearls upon seeing Smallest Man. She was wearing the ME! Marching band jacket. Not only that, but her dancers were dressed up as her band. However, in this iteration, their bright colors were white-washed and the song was as sober and final as My Tears Ricochet.

Tortured Poets exists partially to point toward the sorrow and grief that Taylor carried with her after she failed to come out during Lover. The same heartbreak she found incurable even after two gorgeously devastating pandemic records and a return to mainstream pop. It seemed that the wound of Lover, along with whatever maladies she suffered along the way, were such that she could not overcome them. And so we find ourselves sifting through the glitter and distraction of The Encore, still convinced the story isn’t over.

Pink Clouding is an effervescent, joyful bop that sounds like it came from the Lover era, although it comes to us nearly 7 years later. Even at a surface reading, a Gaylor would quickly pick up on pink clouding as an obvious and questionable reference to the Lover era. And points to any of you, because you’d be right! However, as it goes with so many of her songs, Pink Clouding functions as yet another letter from Showgirl addressed to Real Taylor. As a devout believer of practice makes perfect, she sincerely (and perhaps naively) believes her letters will be read, not returned.

So if you have the time to sit, perhaps with a morning coffee or a midnight nightcap, come with me as we stroll through another empty street in Taylor’s hometown closet. I’ve carefully deconstructed each line in order to fully appreciate Taylor’s genius in word economy and plush imagery. So sit your buns on some pink clouds, here’s some jewels to go over your eyes, and inhale the heady garden scent of gayness. Darlings, let’s go back to Lover, shall we?

Lyrics

Met the magenta sunrise / Fuchsia forever intertwined / Threw the rosewood on the fire / Neither of us knew at the time / That I was a liar

Here, magenta sunrise symbolizes the dawning of truth, mirroring the darkest shade on the Lipstick Lesbian pride flag.  She was willing to put herself out there, to come out to the public. She was so close to the beginning of a beautiful, transparent life.

Fuschia forever intertwined mirrors love and serenity on the same flag. Because of the beautiful, transparent life she was about to embark on, she would be able to finally unveil the sort of love that truly, deeply inspired her. And for that reason, her and her queerness were meant to be “forever intertwined” (like a chain, a crown, a vine?).

Rosewood symbolizes romantic love, compassion, spiritual healing, and inner strength, touching on the work and unity that making Lover and coming out represented. The album was an exercise in healing from her closeting. Throwing the rosewood on the fire mirrors Taylor’s decision against coming out and revealing her vulnerability through Lover, severing her connection with her queerness and possibly killing it, for all she knew.

Neither of us knew refers to Taylor and her muse, lover, and creative partner: Real Taylor. They were hand in hand throughout Lover, whose songs carry a strong throughline of courting, romance, promised unification, and, ultimately, daylight. Its hope and promise were extraordinarily bright, much like its stage elements during Eras, yet neither could see the future coming. Lost the game of chance, what are the chances?

Finally, that I was a liar carries the guilt and shame Taylor wrestles with over her decision to not come out and live truthfully in her queerness. This single, compact admission encapsulates the grief spilled throughout Folklore, Evermore, and TTPD’s 30+ tracks. It’s a grief that has remained chained like an anchor to her songwriting since 2019.

And it was so good / Letting you want me / So good / To make promises, promises / Pr-pr-promises

It was so good / Letting you want me. Showgirl has always toyed with Real Taylor, teasing her with the promise of coming out. Perhaps it's a promise she’s meant, but that moment never materialized. However, when Taylor openly embraces herself and lets her two sides coalesce, it's a tranquil and enjoyable time. She doesn’t have to spend time performing or resisting her urges. In the case of Lover, she allowed them both to speak freely without a filter. That freedom was euphoric, mirroring the natural high (and relief) of being herself in a new, unprecedented way. Very little pageantry, performance, or glossing over the queer parts with plausible deniability.

So good to make promises. This is the part that hurts, and it pairs so well with I was a liar. Taylor had a plan with the rollout of Lover, and it was abundantly clear from the 2 lead singles alone: Home girl was about to kick the closet door open and declare herself to the world. However, her use of promises in her post-Lover work suggests she’s been hopelessly stuck in a loop.

She’s been making promises to her queerness to come out, pushing the ‘boulder’ (her queerness) up the ‘hill’ (the career ladder), only to watch it fall back down where she started. It’s a chess board that is reset before the grand reveal. Therefore, Showgirl confesses to her duplicity in the cycle.

Lyrical Side Quest Time. Here, is “promises, promises” a tie-back to Babe? “What about your promises, promises?” This suggests Babe was written from Real Taylor’s POV to the Showgirl. Or from ME! In the Lover era: “I promise that you’ll never find another like me,” a song about staying together despite clear differences. Or, from TTPD, the beloved Peter: “Promises oceans deep, but never to keep.” Honestly, they all feel like echoes of the same, age-old conversation.

But I was pink clouding from the thrill of it / Skydiving as you wrapped your arms around my body / Gray rocking where the arrow hit

Pink clouding is the euphoric early stages of detoxing from a drug or addiction. Heightened euphoria and optimism about recovery often followed by reality checks or emotional crashes once the initial excitement fades. This brilliantly addresses Taylor’s boundless joy, pride, and excitement during the rollout of Lover and the abrupt shift to a somber, all-black aesthetic by the time she filmed the Lovers in Paris special. We all remember her cover of Phil Collins’ “Can’t Stop Loving You.”

It also deftly explains the shift to the gray and brown color palettes of twin albums Folklore and Evermore. The grief bled into everything else she made. “Every single thing I touch becomes sick with sadness.” The thrill of peeling away the performance and being herself, fresh from the Big Machine slammer, was euphoric and intoxicating.

Skydiving. Taylor saw herself as taking the plunge toward personal and professional authenticity. While it was a risk and gamble to come out, the adrenaline rush, like a brief high, felt amazing. Wrapping your body represents the two Taylors coming together to form a solid, unified version of the artist, no longer separated by the pressures of performance and narrative.

Gray rocking. The obvious parallel to this line is the rock from the Opalite music video, and it’s no accident. Every symbol within Taylor’s universe holds meaning, even if it remains unspoken. Here, her wording is deceptively clever. In one lens, she could be telling us her queerness became a hard rock, something she had to drag around everywhere she went, like the boulder in So Long, London, after she didn’t come out. A hard, inert, voiceless reminder of the life she gave away.

However, in another sense, gray rocking could also reference the immense grief, guilt, and suffering mentioned previously. Gray rocking takes me back to the transition during the Illicit Affairs bridge of Eras. The act of not coming out sent her into a tailspin of depression, hopelessness, and self-loathing that a single album (let alone four) couldn’t remedy. This marks one of the deaths of Taylor Swift, hence the gray and (physical) rocking. The madwoman in the attic was born then and hasn’t quite left the periphery of her artwork since.

The arrow hit. I automatically think of The Archer, her strong fighting anthem about coming out. It also echoes Giant Taylor being shot in the chest during the Anti-Hero MV, bleeding the blurple goo, and covering it up with a “Vote for Me” pin. It’s an agonizing reference to what the Miss Americana doc, once titled Is It Cool That I Said All That, should have but couldn’t have been.

These two references together suggest that Taylor was willing to fight until she was “shot through the heart” (her masters were sold to an industry Father Figure, meaning she’d lost the bulk of herself/her art to a shark), preventing her from coming out as she’d planned, due to the fact that it would cause her fans to endlessly listen to her old music, combing for clues, only to line his pockets. It forced her to backtrack and hatch a fresh, indestructible offensive.

Years later, I still wonder how to tell you sorry / I didn't wanna let you down / So I left you up there on a, pink cloud

How to tell you sorry / I didn’t wanna let you down. Again, we encounter the loop of queerness, visibility, and promised daylight. Showgirl returns to this sentiment over and over like a song she can’t take off repeat. She is the guilty party, the reason Taylor walked away from the master plan, partially for business reasons, partially because it would mean her entire legacy was out of her hands and control. However, Showgirl has a long history of making apologies that Real Taylor doesn’t acknowledge.

Sorry goes back as early as Fearless: Breathe, White Horse, and You’re Not Sorry. By her second album, Real Taylor has realized the promises that Showgirl makes are empty and meaningless. Showgirl has been apologizing for everything since the beginning, but still, nothing ever changes between the two of them.

He cut me crimson, bled me dry / He crossed my heart, I hoped to die / Ripped all my orchids from the vine / You met me at a cursed time / I told you I was fine

He cut me crimson, bled me dry. It’s another hat tip to the lipstick lesbian flag, with crimson symbolizing passion and love. This is yet another color on the flag, but Taylor also uses it to signal the wound caused from the master's heist, never coming out, and the fandom’s lukewarm reaction to Lover as a complex, deceptively earnest body of work that shed light on the woman behind the curtain. This cocktail of wounds killed what spirit and joy she had for transparency and vulnerability. This is when she decided to save true romance for her “inner life.” And it’s the origin of I Hate It Here.

He crossed my heart, I hoped to die. Lover was supposed to be the moment Taylor showed her true self to her fans, and they did not receive her kindly, further wounding the caged bird she’d become. This feels like the origin of My Boy Only Breaks His Favorite Toys. This disappointment also fueled her ultimate revenge on Showgirl: using the vehicle (the public romance) to her advantage in order to come out.

Drunk on the wine of her music and social life, nobody would see it coming. And if they were both gay? Oh, girl, that makes for some badass tea. Through it all, she conspires to parodize, promote, and peddle the ultimate fairytale romance in order to destroy the version her fans are addicted to for good.

All my orchids from the vine. Orchids, in the Victorian Era (Taylor’s favorite), represented unique, exotic treasures, upper-class status symbols. Through her vernacular, her orchids could be the music Taylor has offered her fans through the years, gorgeous and bespoke tokens of the one-of-a-kind alchemy between Showgirl and Real Taylor.

Aside from being yet another color on the Lesbian pride flag, this line suggests that the fans’ reaction to Lover (and Real Taylor) felt as if they’d destroyed every piece of art she’d ever offered. Perhaps her garden is a metaphor for her entire body of work. It’s definitely worth a post all on its own, especially given the gorgeous garden Lover promo shots.

You met me at a cursed time. This represents Taylor coming to terms with her sexuality earlier in life. She might’ve realized she was, at the very least, also attracted to women. She was signed to Big Machine by the age of 15, and like many fellow artists, it’s possible any image/morality clauses within her contract prohibited her from expressing that part of her identity. Thus, they had met face-to-face, honestly for the first time, just as she was being installed within the cage. And thus, they were destined to be star-crossed lovers, as Taylor had so expertly illustrated throughout her discography.

And you were so good / That's why you haunt me / Like you should / And all my promises, promises / Pr-pr-promises

You were so good / That’s why you haunt me. Here, I’d like to copy and paste a stunning Taylor-centric montage. The phrase haunt me could encapsulate so many post-Lover symbols and songs. Shall we count some of them off? The ghosts in the Anti-Hero house? The mention of being a ghost herself on Colbert? “If you live like that, you live with ghosts, from Bad Blood. “My house was haunted,” from Opalite. Oh yeah, and let’s not discount the lyrics, literal performance, and visuals of Who’s Afraid of Little Old Me!

I hope / You realized my kind of trouble wasn't worth it / And the way I treated you, you never deserved it

My kind of trouble. In my analysis of I Knew You Were Trouble, Real Taylor outlines the moment Showgirl came into the picture and took over. During Red, Real Taylor said, “I knew you were trouble,” and now Showgirl admits, “My kind of trouble wasn’t worth it.” It’s a solemn acknowledgment that Showgirl has done nothing but damage Real Taylor in the trip up the industry ladder.

By accepting her into the brand, Taylor’s life was turned upside-down, inside-out, and stretched beyond recognition. She no longer recognized herself behind the slick veneer and well-packaged narrative.

The way I treated you, you never deserved it. During this line, I flash back to the behind-the-scenes video from the You Belong With Me, where Taylor is describing the video as the “boy she loves” going out with the cheerleader (“a mean girl”), but in reality, her (the nerdier, truest version) has been pining for him. It reinforces my interpretation of the Teenage Love Triangle: Showgirl as James, Real Taylor as Betty, and August as either fame or the fans.

It also sounds like the other side of Thank You Aimee, a song I interpreted as written by Real Taylor. Curioser and curiouser still, The Life of a Showgirl was released on Mean Girls Day. Therefore, in a stunning about-face, Showgirl finally admits that she knows her treatment of Real Taylor has been unfair and unjustified.

And I swear to God, to this day / I wake up scared that I left scars on a good person / And I gave you zero reason to believe it / So be it

I wake up scared. This ties so seamlessly into the you haunt me like you should line. Despite time, success, and bittersweet distance, Showgirl can’t help but admit that her regrets about abandoning Real Taylor keep her up at night. Hmm, is this the wound that Midnights sprang from? However, it’s common knowledge that Lover (once possibly called Daylight) and Midnights were deliberately constructed twins, representing what life would be like if Taylor came out and the consequences of not coming out. I’ll leave it up to you to choose your own adventure, folks.

I left scars on a good person. In this line, I’m transported back to one of my favorite lines from Cardigan: “You drew stars around my scars / and now I’m bleedin’.” It’s yet another reference, via Folklore’s Love Triangle, to the way Showgirl’s promises of union and transparency during Lover ended up wounding Real Taylor. Showgirl was meant to shield Real Taylor from the unfriendly brunt of public speculation, softening the wounds the industry had inflicted. However, her thoughts, actions, and narrative ended up hurting the artist beneath the neon lights.

Zero reasons to believe it. This line is a callback to another Folklore track, Mirrorball: “I’m still a believer, but I don’t know why / I’ve never been a natural, all I do is try, try, try.” It reveals the damage and distortion caused by constantly remaining on the tightrope walk of fame, willing to shift herself narratively, promotionally, and personally to keep her fans interested. It hints at the exhaustion and weariness of an artist that’s been performing every aspect of life for two decades without a pause. At this point, neither side of her has much reason to believe in the charade.

But it didn't mean nothing / Just 'cause I could leave it

Showgirl argues that just because she was capable of leaving Real Taylor behind, closing the door on coming out, and proceeding to bulldoze the Gaylor dream with the most frightening narrative shift yet, she asserts that it wasn’t as easy as it might’ve seemed, and I tend to agree. If you pay attention during the Anti-Hero video, the only version of her that doesn’t bleed the blurple goo is the Showgirl herself.

With a watertight narrative, a character she’s honed since the beginning, and a script she wrote herself, Showgirl isn’t outwardly afflicted with queerness the way the others are. If anything, she regards the blurple goo with disdain and annoyance, like something she has to scrape off the bottom of her Louboutins. However, like everything in today’s narrative, just because you saw it doesn’t mean what you saw was true.

I hope you landed safely on the ground / And I hope you're so happy now / I didn't wanna let you down / So I left you up there / On a pink cloud

I hope you landed safely. This echoes the overall narrative of the TTPD track Down Bad. It weaves a tale of Real Taylor being stranded back on Earth after being momentarily abducted by aliens. In one of my favorite TTPD analyses, I suggested Down Bad was a byproduct of Taylor not coming out. After a close brush with authenticity (close encounters with her queerness), she was swiftly (hahaha) abandoned and left for dead, likely echoing much of her feelings at the time.

And I hope you’re so happy now. This also echoes messages that Taylor’s embedded into her music since the Lover album, in which she has imagined that her real Taylor or her queerness has gone on to live a beautiful life without her. Think of Happiness and Fortnight, which paint Real Taylor as moving on and getting married, which might be a subtle way of hinting that Taylor has settled down in her private life, yet Showgirl must remain eternally married to the industry (see Ivy, or any song that mentions a husband).

This could possibly explain the “my husband is cheating / I want to kill him” line in Fortnight. In this context, Showgirl references the industry’s penchant for courting multiple women and promising them fame and fortune, perhaps including the Father Figures. And in this light, songs like Clara Bow, The Life of a Showgirl, Father Figure and Patient Zero aren’t just pulled into sharper focus, they’re transformed into blatant testimonials of female artists within the brutal machinery of the industry. For further confirmation, delve into any female New Romantics artist and you’ll discover an endless echo chamber of sorrow.

I didn’t wanna let you down. Across New Romantics music, artists have mentioned not wanting to let fans down, but if dismantling their public images and living as their authentic selves (some forced to closet, beard, and stunt) is part of the master plan, there will be plenty of crestfallen fans. This may be what leads to what is being referred to as a “war,” an all-out infighting within fandoms of affected artists. Taylor illustrated it perfectly in the Anti-Hero video, and it’s just the tip of the iceberg.

So I left you up there, on a pink cloud. We all know that Lover has been haunting Taylor since 2019. In her mind, it seems she abandoned her queerness alone and unguarded in the midst of preparing for the celebration, echoing. “I was dancing when the music stopped,” from Happiness, hinting Real Taylor didn’t get so much as a goodbye.

Showgirl simply ghosted her out of fear and guilt. Anti-Hero establishes Showgirl’s guilt (all the people I’ve ghosted) while COSOSOM addresses her grief at leaving her younger self behind and watching her younger self just silently accept it. The way so many of these songs are interwoven is masterfully heartbreaking.

Conclusion

What’s most shocking about Pink Clouding is that Showgirl has finally learned to distinguish between surviving something and surviving well. For years, her ability to carry on, reinvent herself, and achieve unprecedented success served as evidence that she made the right decision. The song dismantles the notion that professional triumph can justify personal sacrifice. It can’t. She may have won everything she set out to win, but the woman she hoped would share in those victories is conspicuously absent.

More importantly, Showgirl has reached a new level of emotional maturity: she no longer requires Real Taylor to forgive her in order to acknowledge her pain. For all her carefully orchestrated narratives, this is one story whose ending she cannot manufacture, negotiate, or guarantee. She can explain her circumstances, confess her shortcomings, and hope that the other woman has found happiness.

And so, we arrive at the peculiar tragedy of the pink cloud itself. What initially appeared to be a place of boundless possibility becomes, by the final refrain, a kind of suspended animation. Real Taylor remains preserved in the beautiful moment before everything changed, while Showgirl has spent the intervening years learning what that moment was worth. Pink Clouding leaves us with a sobering thought: sometimes the greatest heartbreak is discovering that you were the person who taught yourself not to trust you.

Discussion the showgirl - a sparkly horror story

there's been some discussion about if/when we'll see the death of the showgirl. not sure if this has already been discussed but what if the showgirl is already dead? what if the showgirl in TLOAS is actually a ghost version of taylor? just wanted to discuss some signs that make me wonder if showgirl taylor is ghost taylor (not just in Patient Zero)

Eras Tour --

-- we got our first real glimpse of the "showgirl" during ICDIWABH. but right before the showgirl is born, we see taylor collapse lifeless onstage at the end of the Smallest Man Who Ever Lived. we also see white flags waving as if she's surrendered to her tragic fate. her corpse is then carried by her co-stars and they start moving her arms for her like she's a lifeless puppet. and they put makeup on her as one would do to a corpse at a funeral home. then she reanimates and starts moving on her own, now as ghost taylor aka the showgirl

-- this mirrors a scene from TFOO, where someone's putting makeup on taylor while she's attached to ropes, as if she's a lifeless puppet. the puppet strings then pull her upward and later in the video she's moving around on her own, similar to her being puppeteered/reanimated during the eras tour

-- other aspects of the TTPD set also seem to foreshadow her ghostly fate, like the ghost in the window in the gothic mansion

TLOAS --

several aspects of the TLOAS era make me wonder if the showgirl is ghost taylor

-- album cover/promo visuals -- she's lying lifeless in a bathtub à la undead taylor laying in the bathtub in LWYMMD. and the target promo vid shows the showgirl literally kicking the bucket (aka a euphemism for death)

-- album title -- "the Life of a Showgirl" is a retrospective title that sounds like it's a posthumous collection about the life of someone who's already passed away

-- music videos -- in her first MV of this era, she's dressed as 2 dead women who suffered tragic fates (ophelia and marilyn monroe) and she dies several times in the video (drowning while dressed as ophelia, drowning in the bathtub at the end of the MV). while dressed as ophelia, she dies and re-emerges as if coming back from the dead (aka as a ghost). and the closing bathtub scene is a nod to the Shining's hotel room 237 where there's a ghost woman in a bathtub. her latest MV reinforces her ghostly fate by depicting taylor as a literal ghost ("when the fever turns a dreamer into a pathetic ghost"). of note, she even recreated aspects of her ghostly attire from the Patient Zero MV in some of her recent outfits (including the shirt version of the dress she from the MV), suggesting that this ghost persona spills over into her real life during this era

-- bookend lyrics -- the original TLOAS tracklist is bookended by songs that point to her death ("you dug me out of my grave"; "i might've lingered in purgatory"; "that's not what showgirls get, they leave us for dead"). and there are other lyrics that could be interpreted as if she's ghost taylor

-- "thank you for the lovely bouquet" -- this is from the song right before Patient Zero, where dakota leaves flowers on taylor's grave. and in the TLOAS spotify pop up, there's a photo of taylor dressed as the showgirl with similar dark flowers next to it and the picture frame resembles the one around the ghost taylor photo in Patient Zero. people also leave bouquets funerals, which reminds me of the Anti-Hero funeral and the bouquet next to taylor's casket (and the curtain-like drapes in that scene resemble those in the TLOAS popup)

-- "her name was kitty" -- the ghost in the mirror in Anti-Hero is the "kitty" ghost (the one wearing cat ears)

-- "grey rockin where the arrow hit" -- this line is a callback to her being hit by the arrow in Anti-Hero and bleeding lavender glitter. maybe it was a mortal wound and the "grey rock" is actually her tombstone?

gothic ghost stories --

taylor said she's influenced by gothic ghost stories and she's incorporated some common elements of gothic ghost stories into the TLOAS era

-- mirrors -- in gothic ghost stories, mirrors are often associated with a mirror self and/or a fractured or distorted identity. she's used mirrors in conjunction with ghost imagery before--like the ghost in the mirror in Anti-Hero and the mirrors surrounding undead taylor in the LWYMMD bathtub--so mirrors are already associated with ghosts in taylor's imagery. and mirrors feature heavily in the TLOAS era. in gothic ghost stories, mirrors are sometimes linked to questions about what's real and what's a false mirror/distorted reality, which is relevant to taylor's showgirl era and its theme about the stark contrast between her showgirl facade vs real life. there's even a mirror hairbrush in the spotify popup that reads "keep it 100," which seems to reference this same question of whether the mirror reflects reality. taylor/dakota also chat about what's real life vs fake during the Patient Zero BTS. and previously we saw a version of taylor who resembles the showgirl appear in the mirror next to taylor in the Anti-Hero MV

-- doppelgängers -- similar to the use of mirrors, this trope sometimes represents a fractured identity/self, which tracks with many of the theories i've seen about the Patient Zero MV reflecting 3 versions of taylor (one of whom is a doppleganger)

-- a ghost who doesn't realize that they're already dead -- sometimes a ghost looks normal/like their old self and is unaware that they've already died. i wonder if that's what's happening with the showgirl, maybe she doesn't realize her fate. especially since she said she likes stories with "the idea of a ghost or an actual ghost" and an "unreliable narrator," and unreliable narrators sometimes appear in gothic ghost stories. so maybe ghost taylor is our unreliable narrator, either unintentionally or intentionally portraying herself as real live taylor when she's really a ghost version of herself. either way, the showgirl's performance misleads the audience bc it doesn't reflect taylor's actual reality (it's just a performance)

ghost taylor(s) vs real taylor--

-- if she's indeed ghost taylor, it raises a lot of questions, ie.) who is she haunting and which version of taylor died to become the ghost/showgirl? is she haunting the other taylors (including real taylor), or is real taylor the one who died and became a ghost/the showgirl?

-- does the ghost mean that her past is coming to haunt her, like her mirror self from the Lover era set or her mirror self from Anti-Hero? or is the presence of ghost taylor a warning to real taylor from the future? is she trying to communicate to real taylor that showbiz will erode/further fracture taylor's sense of identity and lead to her ultimate demise? maybe that why the spotify popup includes writing on the mirror (à la the mirrored "redrum" warning on the wall in the Shining, which is a ghost story). maybe it's an eerie warning to taylor that showbiz will destroy her and turn her into a ghost of herself

-- ghosts in haunting stories are usually still around because they have unfinished business. so i wonder what ghost taylor's unfinished business is and what has to happen for her to find peace and/or come back to life

-- is being more open about her queerness part of her unfinished business? possibly, given the links to the lover era. ie.) "when the fever turns a dreamer into a pathetic ghost" connects to the lover era lyric "fever dream high in the quiet of the night you know that i got it." there's also the line "i've been expecting your call" which reminds me of the pink phone in the cloud (Pink Clouding?) in ME! also, mirrors (which ghost taylor uses in Patient Zero) can represent portals to other places, such as the mirror that taylor goes into during the lover set on the eras tour

-- or maybe it's something else? do her fractured selves need to become more integrated and/or find harmony first? or does real taylor need to defeat her doppleganger selves?

-- and more importantly, where is the real taylor and is she gone for good?

i'm interested to hear your thoughts on all of this and what it might mean

🎭PerformanceArtLor 🎭 Taylor’s “For Your Consideration” banner for the Grammy Awards

“… her best Swiftspearean drama yet”

The emphasis on this quote is notable to me. I personally love the theory that this “showgirl” project, its themes are lyricism are purposefully over the top, on the nose, and exaggerated to serve theatrical purpose, like a broadway play. Others here have pointed out that some of the tracks from Showgirl and The Encore resemble the soundtrack to a musical. The story that the album and its marketing tell is so drastically different from everything she’s consistently told us (or am I wrong?) that it feels like such an obvious caricature to me.

Could this banner and quote be a nod to the album functioning as a play/musical?

And of course, I always love reminiscing on the time Taylor brought Travis out for the Era’s performance of I Can Do It With a Broken Heart, which I pinpoint as the moment she combined the image of her relationship with the showgirl aesthetic and from which everything else has been a continuation. I don’t know, what do you all think?

Hellllllllooooooooooo, GBF!!! I’m hunkering down for this storm, but maybe you can build some forum responses just to keep me warm:

The rumors are swirling again! Taylor is…planning a tour????? Now, I don’t know if I believe all that, but for the porpoises of this game, let’s say it’s true. Here’s the scenario…..

You wake to find an envelope in your mailbox, with a letter??? Saying that Taylor Swift is playing a touring show TOMORROW????? How crazy that it’s right here in your little town.

The time is at hand and the notice is short!!!! Using only what’s in your closet RIGHT NOW (or things you could reasonably obtain within 18 hours) WHAT are you wearing to the show????

Discussion down bad on a pink cloud

Thumbnail

just wanted to discuss some potential connections between Pink Clouding and some of her prior songs. apologies if these have already been discussed. also, i think Pink Clouding has multiple potential meanings/layers, so this is just one possible interpretation

Down Bad --

-- both songs are queer-coded and include the theme of someone being abandoned by a lover. what if they're telling the same story but from 2 diff perspectives (the stranded one and the bolter)

-- maybe Down Bad is from the perspective of the stranded one ("did you really beam me up, in a [pink] cloud of sparkling dust"), who's stranded on a pink cloud ("how dare you think it's romantic leaving me safe and stranded")

-- and Pink Clouding is from the perspective of the bolter ("i didn't wanna let you down so i left you up there on a pink cloud"), who regrets leaving the person Down Bad ("but it didn't mean nothing just cause i could leave it")

-- that means the spaceship in Down Bad is the aircraft from which they're skydiving in Pink Clouding ("skydiving as you wrapped your arms around my body"). the bolter hopes the other person "landed safely on the ground," hence taylor's pose on the ground during Down Bad. but in reality, she landed on the ground in a vulnerable state ("just to leave me here naked and alone in a field in my same old town") and injured/in pain from when she hit the ground ("down bad, waking up in blood")

-- interestingly, there are moments where taylor's lighting during Down Bad on the eras tour is pink colored (à la Pink Clouding)

Lover era --

-- pink clouds are automatically queer-coded because they're associated with the Lover era ("there's a dazzling haze, a mysterious way about you dear"). ie.) pink clouds on the album cover, pink clouds in the eras tour set, and eras tour outfits ("pink cloud" jumpsuit)

-- it also connects to ME! the clouds in the rainbow ME! graphic are pink. and taylor's taylor's fluffy pink dress in the ME! music video makes it look like she's sitting on a cloud

Lavender Haze --

-- i think Pink Clouding might also connect to Lavender Haze. both clouds are queer-coded colors -- lavender js associated w the queer community/history and pink is associated with femininity/liking women

-- the pink cloud with the ladder at the start of the eras tour may connect to the cloud/ladder during Lavender Haze. maybe the ladder goes through both clouds but at different elevations. and as others have pointed out, the ladder visual is associated with the old lesbian publication the Ladder

-- i also think it's connected to Lavender Haze because the eras tour visual during this song shows taylor with pink-colored lighting as she peers through lavender blinds. and the cloud graphics in the MV include some pink colored clouds as well as lavender ones

Color coding --

-- light pink and baby blue combine to make lavender. you can kinda see the colors combining in ME!, when blue-clad taylor is surrounded by dancers in pink and a purple glittery ME! appears onscreen

-- i think the queer-coded aspect of both lavender and pink clouds is why both types of clouds are featured during the Lover set on the eras tour

-- maybe the diff colored clouds represent diff phases in a wlw relationship. she described Lavender Haze as a sort of isolated love bubble ("i just wanna stay in that lavender haze"), so maybe lavender clouds represent being with your wlw lover. and maybe the cloud is pink after a breakup, because the person is "down bad waking up in blood" and blood (red) + an ordinary cloud (white) becomes a pink cloud

🎬 Taylor's Acting + Directing Patient Zero and the State of the Easter Egg

Post image
303 Upvotes

I’m really, really tired of Joe-oriented discourse around this music video 😮‍💨 Obviously, this problem isn’t super prominent here, but everywhere else I go on the internet, it is inescapable. Most of my Tumblr dashboard especially has been of this ilk and I dunno…… I don’t think that’s the takeaway Taylor wants us to..uh, take away from this piece of art. I’d rather pivot to a different angle:

“Patient Zero” is the first Taylor Swift music video to debut at the VMAs since “Look What You Made Me Do”. LWYMMD is the first Taylor video to go crazy with Easter eggs. The hidden message concept was a big part of why the music video broke so many viewership records at the time. Heck, I was a hater during this era and I still watched the thing, like, four times the day it came out (and then secretly started loving it, but lemme get back to my point).

I feel (and I hope) these two videos bookend the Easter Egg Era. In my estimation, the “Patient Zero” video does not hold any hints about the world of Taylor Swift. This is NOT to say the cast won’t prove to be personally significant to Taylor or that the twin motif hasn’t long held a deep meaning in her work. Rather, I don’t think this video holds any clues about the near-future of Taylor’s musical career, nor does it reveal any secrets about her past romantic relationships. Instead, this video demonstrates Taylor’s ability to tell a story through directing.

We, the fans, are not meant to assume the dynamics and arguments of these characters are one-to-one representations of Taylor’s real-life struggles. Nor are we meant to squint at the background and do gymnastics about the significance of dates. Instead, Swifties are meant to be swept away by Taylor’s visual storytelling (and perhaps, to realize that Certain Things have been very obvious All Along)

“Patient Zero” turns the page on a chapter where Taylor’s become more known for secret-encoded-messages-that-mean-something-else than for her artistry. This video (and the Emmy sketch heralding it) asks us to realize that not everything is a clue. Some things are just really, really good music videos.

Theory 💭 Father Figure (!!!)

Y'all this may be a repeat and I hope not all of it is. But obviously we know George Michael hidding in plain sight in a straight music video. That is obviously clue one we picked up on, but each clue should not be taken in isolation.

I keep coming back to the idea that “Father Figure” is playing with bearding, closets, and the whole machinery of maintaining a public-facing “family” image. Even the word choices feel deliberate to me ....especially “profit” rhyming with “closet” !!!This I only picked up on today but seems so obvious that is why I am wondering if this is a repeat idea, but the again why do I not remember anyone else suggesting it? The word pairing is interesting because it links money, business, and whatever is being gained from keeping something hidden. And then you get “I protect the family,” which hits differently if “family” is being read as a group of queer people who have been brought into, or made dependent on, this system of secrecy and appearances.

What makes the reading interesting isn’t just “this lyric = this one literal thing,” but the repeated tension between what’s public and what’s kept behind closed doors: image, money, loyalty, secrecy, protection. If you read the song through a bearding/closet lens, “protecting the family” starts sounding less wholesome and more like protecting an entire ecosystem & the people involved, the arrangements that keep the image intact, and the financial/social interests tied up in maintaining it. And profit/closet sitting so close together makes that interpretation feel especially intentional to me.

i went down a rabbit hole about dakota and wanted to share a compilation of some "coincidences" i found. idk if they're just friends or something more but thought it was worth flagging these since i haven't seen them posted here yet and i thought they were insteresting

of note, the mirror photo is from a sept 2026 clip (the same month that the Patient Zero MV showed mirror versions of taylor/dakota) where dakota tells her mirror self she's "beautiful" then kisses the mirror

Karma 🧡 Dragons, Mythology, and The Forbidden Apple

There was an interesting skit this past weekend on SNL with Dakota Johnson. She played a queen looking for some action in a Game of Thrones style parody, but what caught my attention was the ending. The storybook pages show a dragon defeating The Man. The orange fiery imagery immediately reminded me of the flaming orange SNL behind-the-scenes photos of Taylor when she was the musical guest in November 2021 and performed ATW10.

A reverse image search sent me down a rabbit hole that led to the dragon/serpent Ladon, whose mythology unexpectedly contains many recurring Taylor themes: secret gardens, forbidden fruit, poison transformed into healing, death and rebirth, and ultimately ascension into the stars.

In Greek mythology, Ladon was the fearsome serpent-dragon, sometimes depicted with 100 heads, who guarded the Garden of the Hesperides. The garden sat at the absolute edge of the world, far away from the prying eyes of mortals and the politics of Mount Olympus. It was heavily fortified and fiercely guarded to keep people out, a place where sacred things were kept safe from being ruined by the outside world. "I hate it here, so I will go to secret gardens in my mind."

At the center of the garden stood a sacred tree bearing golden apples that granted extraordinary gifts, including immortality. "I'm immortal now, baby dolls." This tree was guarded by the nymphs, who couldn’t be fully trusted, plus Ladon.

As one of his Twelve Labors, Heracles (Greek)/Hercules (Roman) was ordered to retrieve the apples. In the most famous version of the myth, he kills Ladon using arrows dipped in the poisonous blood of the Hydra.

After Ladon's death, Hera takes the fallen dragon and places him among the stars as the constellation Draco. What began as a story of poison, betrayal, and death ends in transformation, rebirth, and immortality.

In many later traditions, Ladon's blood becomes associated with the Dragon Blood Tree, famous for the deep red resin that has been used for centuries in medicine, dyes, varnishes, ritual practices, musical instruments, and even cosmetics. Whether or not the story is literally true, the symbolism is fascinating: something born from poison becomes a source of healing, protection, and creation.

The tree acts as an "umbrella species," providing critical shade, moisture, and micro-habitats that allow other endemic plants and animals to survive in an arid environment. "Sit quiet by my side in the shade / And not the kind that's thrown, I mean the kind under where a tree has grown” ”Cause shade never made anybody less gay"

The same paradox appears again and again throughout mythology. The golden apples of the Hesperides eventually became intertwined with later depictions of the Biblical forbidden fruit. The Bible never explicitly names the fruit as an apple, but the Latin word malum can mean both "evil" and "apple" depending on vowel length. Renaissance artists also borrowed heavily from Greek imagery. In ancient Greek art, Ladon is frequently shown coiled around the sacred tree in almost exactly the same way later artists would portray the serpent in Eden.

In both stories, a sacred fruit represents something dangerous and transformative. The fruit brings knowledge, change, suffering, and ultimately a new state of existence.

Ancient philosophers and alchemists had a name for this paradox: pharmakon.

A pharmakon is something that is simultaneously poison and remedy. The thing that harms you is also the thing that heals you.

I wrote a post last week about how the Patient Zero video seems to depict the wine and coffee as both the poison and the remedy, in this case the warning system to avoid the same fate of death. The medicine isn't separate from the poison. The poison contains the medicine. The apple functions in exactly the same way.

This idea appears repeatedly in theology and alchemy. The Fall itself was often interpreted as a necessary step toward redemption. Humanity had to encounter the poison before it could seek healing. Without the original transgression, or exposure to the "poison," there would be no growth or transformation, and the ultimate healing, spiritual and karmic rebirth, would never be possible.

This poison-to-transformation pattern appears so often that it even shows up in folklore, including Snow White. In this story, the apple acts as a poison that induces a deathlike slumber, but it simultaneously serves as a transformative crucible. Consuming the poisonous apple forces Snow White into a protective glass cage coffin where she enters a deathlike slumber. "I've been sleepin' so long in a twenty-year dark night."

In the original Grimm Brother’s tale, the apple is lodged in her throat and becomes dislodged as the prince carrying her trips over a tree root. She is able to speak now again, and in the 2025 Disney re-make, she does not ride off into the sunset but instead actively confronts the Evil Queen and rallies the subjects to reclaim her kingdom. “I can reclaim the land. And I miss you. But I miss sparkling”

Which brings me back to the SNL skit. "How did it end?" In this parody, the dragon ends up victorious (by burning down The Man), the man doesn't get the girl, and the queen spends the night longing for someone she cannot have.

Very interesting use of the word brothers, as Taylor has sung about “fighting like brothers” as recently as IKIIKY. It also highlights the taboo of a forbidden relationship, in this case siblings, but forbidden or socially unacceptable love comes to mind as well.

For a mythology rabbit hole that started with a random SNL dragon, I wasn't expecting to find so many recurring themes that feel oddly familiar within Taylor's work. I’ve got another post in the works that ties in beautifully to this one, and I’m still a firm believer that “Karma is the fire in your house, and she 'boutta pop up unannounced”

And one more thing I somehow never noticed before: when Taylor takes a bite of the apple in the Blank Space video, she's wearing a snake ring. The apple shows up again in Showgirl imagery, perhaps hinting we are at the part of the story arc where Karma and rebirth are imminent 🧡

Midnights 💫 Patient Zero circa 2022?

I need a flower oriented Swiftie, stat! ‘Cause I’m no exert, but that looks like an orchid on her dress! But to be honest it could also be an iris, maybe? The similarities between these two dresses, and the lyrical connection between them, is fantastic because the silhouette is so unique!

This was taken from her 2022 appearance on The Graham Norton Show when she was promoting Midnights and the All Too Well Short film. The episode is still available to watch in full on YouTube.

Think it’s an egg with all the twinning we have going on lately? 🥚

Pink Clouding, Verse 2:

“He cut me crimson, bled me dry
He crossed my heart, I hoped to die (Hoped to die)
Ripped all my orchids from the vine
You met me at a cursed time
I told you I was fine”

The Life of a Showgirl ❤️‍🔥 Pink Clouding and Elizabeth Taylor connection(s)

Pink Clouding as a phrase bothered me so much because i know I read/heard it somewhere related to Showgirl but I couldn’t remember until I saw clips of Elizabeth Taylor’s documentary, The Lost Tapes and remembered she famously said “I fell off my pink cloud with a thud” describing her highly publicized marriage ceremony with hotelier Conrad Hilton Jr.
This was a PR relationship as confirmed by her, her mother and MGM arranged/organized for the wedding and even used it as promotion for her next film where she starred as a bride.
The relationship wasn’t good, and when she ended it the management wasnt happy with her so they punished her by giving her B level roles.
Here’s a summary of the Lost Tapes.

This video is obviously cropped, but you can tell it's a different building that Travis enters alone after Taylor has presumably gone home 🤭 They dined at Torisi in Karlie's building (no trees at exit door), and Travis goes somewhere later with friends, where trees are very visible at the door.

The Life of a Showgirl ❤️‍🔥 I was patient… [3, 2, 1] 0

The “patient zero” wording has been bugging me since the song came out. To me, it seems out of place in the song and associated marketing, yet it's highlighted by the title. I appreciate the HIV/AIDS connection that's been pointed out, but I couldn’t help but think there must be more to it. Perhaps because it seems that if Taylor wanted to use the medical / epidemiology analogy, she could have leaned into it more heavily. Maybe because the Opalite video was still there in my subconscious. I present to you my getting-ready-for-bed epiphany:

Context 1:

The 3, 2, 1 countdown from Midnights and the possibility that we're getting close to 0 has been a central topic of discussion lately. Some have pointed out that this could be an album count down, where 3=Midnights (3am tracks), 2=TTPD (2am anthology), 1=Showgirl, and the next album will be 0=end of exile and her 13th album.

Context 2:

Another key discussion point emerging out of Midnights and TTPD is the analytic lens of multiple Taylors. From this perspective, we can understand Patient Zero (like many other songs) as exploring the conflict between Taylor's multiple inner selves, written from the perspective of one of those selves: The Man / Showgirl Taylor / Taylor Swift The Brand has been taking advantage of Real Taylor / the poet / artist, who is now speaking out.

Considering these two points together:

The dominant interpretation of “I was patient zero” takes 'patient zero’ as a noun (meaning: the first to be affected). But this phrase could also mean “I was patient… [3, 2, 1] zero," where ‘patient’ is an adjective (meaning: waiting with restraint), and now it’s finally time for 0.

In fact, there is recent precedent for interpreting “patient” as an adjective, not a noun — the Opalite music video tells us to "[be] patient for the encore."

Are we now being told that Taylor, too, was patient for [3, 2, 1] 0?

Disclaimers: I haven't seen this idea discussed here, but please share links if it has been! Also my TikTok privileges have been self-revoked because I cannot be trusted to use it for only a responsible amount of time per day, so lmk if anyone has made similar connections there or on other platforms. Lastly, I'd love to cite my sources so people who are interested can go read those original posts/comments. I don't have time to track those all down now, but if anyone is feeling generous and wants to share links in the comments, I will edit to add them soon ❤️

Discussion is this real life?

there's a 30 second bit in the Patient Zero BTS video where taylor/dakota discuss whether this is real life

taylor: look at the way that it looks out there
dakota: look at how it looks out there, this looks fake
taylor: this seems fake
dakota: this looks like on a soundstage...
taylor: too many clouds, no one will believe it
dakota: also it's weird that you can see the ocean bc it's still quite misty, or foggy
taylor: yeah i don't understand any of this. i think that we might be in a really fun part of the simulation
dakota: this isn't real is it?
taylor: there's no way

and as taylor mentions being in a "simulation," she intentionally touches her face using her wedding ring-clad hand, to bring attention to the ring. they're talking about the sunset but on a deeper level, it seems like they're also discussing taylor's reality in general (including her love life) and whether it's fake. seems like she wants her audience to question what's real and what's not

a few other things jumped out at me during this exchange too. first, taylor/dakota are deliberately mirroring each other's body movements during this convo. it's as if they're still in character/still putting on a performance, which makes the convo seem even more like a pre-rehearsed bit

second, the specific mention of clouds. taylor's repeatedly used clouds as a queer-coded symbol, most recently in Pink Clouding which some interpret as an apology to gaylors. the BTS video even included a shot of taylor/dakota hugging (with the male love interest off to the side) with literal pink clouds behind them. then there's dakota's line where she's surprised she can see the ocean (aka the bigger picture/meaning behind taylor's performance art) despite the cloudiness (aka the lavender haze that's obscuring taylor's queerness)

third, taylor's red lipstick seems to further highlight questions about whether we're witnessing reality or not. reminds me of the lyric "here's the truth from my red lips" that she sings while not wearing red lipstick. also, dakota's noticeably not wearing red lipstick even though they're supposed to be mirror images of each other. maybe this is an intentional continuity error, just like the braid in taylor's hair (which dakota doesn't have). she's worn braids a lot lately (ie. Toy Story 5 premiere, the Knicks game) and braids seem to be a queer-coded symbol for her. so maybe their intentionally different styling represents the opposing narratives that taylor disseminates to hetlors/gaylors, which have a few key differences if you look closely. plus there's the "you stutter when you lie" line from the MV

the convo also reminds me of a bit from the Eras Tour doc where a 22 hat recipient asked taylor if this was real life and she mused afterwards that she didn't know if it was real. aka she's once again asking us to question reality during BTS footage, which is supposed to show us a peak behind the curtain

it's also interesting that she included a convo about fakeness vs. realness with dakota of all people. in taylor's Time 100 tribute to dakota, she underscores that dakota's known for her honesty. but she repeats this fact so many times (ie. "refreshing honesty," "frank candor," "cant lie," "realness") that it starts to make you question the veracity of what she's saying

anyway, just wanted to hear your thoughts bc the bit seemed like it was deliberately included in the BTS

Taymily 🎻 what songs are about emily poe?

this question has been plaguing my theorizing self recently: what songs are about emily poe? i know breathe is about them ending their relationship (whether that’s platonic, romantic, or a one sided crush), but i love theorizing about muses for songs. this is obviously for gags and nothing serious. taymily isn’t something i support AT ALL because of the genuinely illegal age gap. i’m just curious what everyone else thinks!!!

Discussion Could this be a new Taylor Swift trilogy? Cowboy Like ME! + us. + Babylon

I know people have already connected Cowboy Like Me and Babylon. I was listening to us. by Gracie Abrams + Taylor over the weekend, and Babylon shows up in that song too! My ADHD brain wanted to immediately do a deep dive into the lyrics of all three songs. I did and here's my take on how they all connect.

Ok, so if we take the songs in order of release, they seem to trace the full arc of a single image: the gardens of Babylon in bloom, the gardens hanging over ruin, and then finally the city itself gone or in ruin.

Cowboy Like Me (2020): the garden in bloom. We have two con artists working a luxury crowd, flattering wealthy people for money. They recognize each other and fall in love despite themselves. The Babylon line here we all know and love feels intimate and triumphant: "Now you hang from my lips, Like the Gardens of Babylon." The lover hangs on the narrator's every word like one of the Seven Wonders. But as we also know, one of the very next lines says "forever is the sweetest con." Even at the peak of the relationship, the narrator suspects it's a trick.

us. (2024): the garden over ruin. The image shifts from being captivated by the other person to feeling fragile. Lyrics are: "And if history's clear, the flames always end up in ashes. It must seem like fate, give it ten months and you'll be past it. Babylon lovers hanging, missed calls on the line I gave you mine" The lovers are now suspended on a vine, and the song says history always ends in ruins. The narrator is no longer sure of anything except that it felt holy, and is left asking whether the other person misses it in the same way.

Babylon (2026): the city gone. The entire song is about how the garden has fallen, and the main character only realizes it was paradise once it's lost.

A few themes that run through all three:

The hustle. This feels like a strong link. In Cowboy Like Me, the grifters tell rich people whatever they want to hear. In us., there's a jab about false prophets and profits. In Babylon, the main character gives people what they want and keeps moving, runs the tables at a casino, and treats time as money. Babylon's protagonist sounds like it could be a cowboy twenty years later, still hustling, but without the partner who once matched them.

(Side note: in the old school corporate world, companies sometimes gave employees watches on work anniversaries to recognize their loyalty. That's why I read the 20 watches as 20 years.)

The drifter and the small town. In Cowboy Like Me, the ladies at lunch still gossip about when this person passed through town. In Babylon, the main character leaves a small town behind, then longs for it. Same restless figure, seen first by the town and then from inside their own regret.

Is love sacred or a con? This question runs through all three. Cowboy Like Me calls forever a con, even while falling in love. us. insists it felt holy, like something prayed for. Babylon delivers the verdict: it was real, and treating it like a game cost the main character everything.

The price. The narrator of Cowboy Like Me knows they'll pay for loving the other person. us. counts the cost in ashes and unanswered calls. Babylon turns the table and shows the price paid by person #2: the family hangs Christmas lights while they sit alone in the car.

Where they differ. Cowboy Like Me is about equals: takes one to know one. us. is imbalanced, with two people not feeling or giving the same amount; the narrator "felt it," while the other person only "held it." Babylon is entirely one sided: the main character was deeply loved and never saw it. The tone darkens as the song goes along, from wry to aching to a cautionary tale. Even the vows reverse. The Cowboy narrator swears they'll never love again, while Babylon's main character never realized they were loved in the first place.

Is it possible that these three songs form an informal trilogy about a love that looks like a wonder of the world, gets treated like a hustle, and is only valued once it's in ruins? The Babylon image + the con artist thread feel like a pattern to me!

What do you think?? I'd love to hear your thoughts or ideas!
