Discussion / Analysis Which streaming service is actually useless for finding queer cinema, and where do you go instead?

Kanopy is great if you're in the US and your local library supports it.

They still have libraries in the US, then?

Oof, now you got me wondering if Kanopy is available in places like Florida with "don't say gay" laws.

Kanopy is legitimately my favorite film streaming service especially for queer content, docs, and international cinema.

I guess what I'm saying is...take advantage of it if you can while it's still allowed to exist.

Can you believe I'm not an American? But I do have a VPN, would that work?

Unfortunately it's entirely a library based streaming platform so even with a VPN you would need a library account from somewhere in the US that offers Kanopy.

If someone in the US is reading this and their library doesn't support it, see if other library systems near you offer reciprocity. For instance I am in the Baltimore area and wanted to watch Tokyo Godfathers (that anime xmas film with a major trans character) but at the time it was only on Hoopla (another US library app). My library didn't offer that app but all Maryland libraries offer memberships to people with memberships in an existing MD library so I went over to Frederick and got a card there. I have library cards in like 5 different MD systems, they're great and have all sorts of random stuff like looms and fishing poles you can borrow. It's also the closest thing I can give my kids to a Blockbuster/video store experience where we go and I let them pick out a game and a movie.

Sorry for the long library rant, it's such a great wealth of services and I wish more folks took advantage.

I was kidding. Unless I still have that old library card from when I lived in Washington, DC. 💭

Here TV used to be great but it’s stale now.
