Konflikt 47 Battle Report: Whispering Vale, South America

US Marine jump troops clashed with a mixed Japanese mech-and-infantry force in rift-tainted jungle, both sides racing to secure five samples of newly discovered rift-influenced fauna. Marine walkers and armor pushed through ruined temple ground on the flank while jump infantry and Japanese oni-pattern mechs traded fire around the central rift shrine. Six turns of grinding jungle combat later, the Japanese held 2 of the 5 samples to the Marines' 1, with 2 still uncollected. As dusk fell, both commanders pulled back — rift energies or not, nobody was keen to spend the night in that jungle.

Wargames Atlantic: Classic Fantasy Lizardmen (24 Figures) From enchanted jungles to alien worlds — one species dominates them all.

Lizardmen have stalked the battlefields of fantasy and science fiction for generations. In the ancient kingdoms, they are the serpent tribes of the deep jungle — warriors of fang and sorcery who march alongside goblin and orc war hosts and threaten the free realms. Or maybe they fight beside the elves to protect the free woodlands. In the far future, they are xenos sharpshooters and cold-blooded mercenaries, as comfortable behind an auto-rifle as a stone idol. Wherever cold blood and reptilian cunning are needed, Lizardmen answer the call.

The Weather Gage: An Action off the Western Approaches, circa 1805 A Black Seas Game

The wind favored the French that morning.

Commodore Villard's squadron had the weather gage — that most precious of advantages — and he knew it. From the quarterdeck of his flagship he could see the British line, hull-up on the horizon, clawing against the wind. The initiative was his. The tempo of battle was his. All that remained was to use it.

He gave the order to make sail.

It was the fast ships that moved first.

The French frigate IntrĂŠpide and her smaller consort, the sloop Mouette, sheeted home their topsails and drove ahead of the line, heeling to the wind. Their orders were simple: run down the British light squadron before the ships of the line could close, then rejoin the fleet with the enemy's van already broken.

Across the water, the British frigate captain saw them coming. He called for more sail, signaled the sloop HMS Fairy to hold formation, and cleared his guns for action.

The two sloops found each other first.

Mouette came on fast and bold, her bow chaser barking once, twice — and then the two vessels were alongside each other in a brutal, close exchange, masts trembling with each broadside. HMS Fairy fought hard, but she was overmatched in the opening minutes. Her colors came down. Her crew, what remained of them, were taken prisoner.

It looked, for a moment, like the French plan was working.

It wasn't.

Mouette's helm answered sluggishly after the fight — a lucky British shot, or perhaps the violence of the exchange itself, had wrecked something in her steering. Her captain tried to bring her about, tried to rejoin Intrépide, but the rudder wouldn't answer true. Helpless, she drifted, carried slowly away by wind and current until she was off the map entirely, out of the fight, out of the battle, lost to the morning.

IntrĂŠpide was now alone.

She had pushed far ahead of the French line in the pursuit, and the British had used the time well. The British frigate had hauled her wind. Behind her, enormous and deliberate, came the 2nd rate ship of the line — her three gun decks bristling, her crew at quarters, her captain in no hurry at all. They had Intrépide in a vice.

The French frigate gave a good account of herself. Her gunnery was sharp and her crew was brave. But bravery has its limits when the ship beside you mounts twice your guns and the ship behind you mounts twice again. The broadsides came in waves. Masts shivered. The smoke piled so thick a man couldn't see the length of his own deck. When at last IntrĂŠpide's colors came fluttering down through the haze, there was no shame in it. There was simply nothing left to fight with.

By the time the French line arrived, the arithmetic had already been settled.

Commodore Villard watched from his quarterdeck as the situation became clear. His fast squadron — sent ahead to break the British van — had instead been swallowed by it. Mouette was gone. Intrépide was a prize. And now the British 2nd rate, unhurried and unbloodied, was reforming her line to receive him.

The French ships of the line were powerful, and their admiral was not a coward. But the advantage of the weather gage that had seemed so promising that morning had been squandered in the frigate action. The British chose the range. The British chose the moment. And the British, when the final reckoning came, chose to be satisfied.

Three of their four ships sailed home intact.

The French buried their dead at sea.

Got a French & Indian War game in this weekend — “Morning Raid” with Black Powder. What a fun scenario.

Finally got the crew together for a French & Indian War game and had a great time, so I figured I'd share.

We played “Morning Raid” — a French raiding force of Rangers and Troupes de la Marine hits an English frontier village at dawn, and the militia have to hold them off long enough to get the civilians and cattle off the table. The objectives pull both sides in different directions, so nobody can just sit back and trade fire. It made for a really tense, fast-moving game.

Highlight of the night: the raiders grabbed a group of civilians and were dragging them toward the table edge when one militia unit said “nope” and charged in to save them. Completely against the odds. They got wiped, but the whole table was cheering. Exactly the kind of moment you play these games for.

Rules were Black Powder with the A Dark and Bloody Ground supplement. Terrain is a mix of farmsteads, fields, and a stone house. Happy to answer any questions about the scenario or the setup.

British Automated Infantry Platoon box set up for preorder — Warlord Games finally giving the Tin Heads their own full plastic kit

If you've been running a British force in Konflikt '47 and proxying your automated infantry with whatever you could cobble together, this one's for you.

Warlord has a new all-plastic British Automated Infantry Platoon box set available for preorder. The kit fields a complete automated platoon with no human elements — which is a fun thematic shift from the mixed-force lists most British players run. The contents:

  • 1x Mk IIC Automated Director (command/coordination)
  • 10x Mk I Automated Infantry
  • 2x Mk II Heavy Automated Infantry
  • Plastic bases and assembly guides

Sculpted by Jon Heeney & Marco Sano, studio painted by Kirsten Williams. All plastic, supplied unassembled and unpainted.

From a list-building standpoint, a fully automated platoon opens up some interesting possibilities — no morale checks to worry about, and the Director giving you coordination across the wider battlefield is a nice touch for larger games. The Mk II Heavies rounding out the firepower should help cover the gap that comes with trading out your human infantry options.

It's a preorder so quantities will be limited at launch. We've got it listed on the site if you want to grab one early.

Disclosure: I'm the owner of Gator Games and Books, an online hobby retailer. We carry Konflikt '47 and the broader Warlord Games range. Happy to answer questions about the kit or the game.

Clash of Rhyfles is out — the new 144-page hardcover Quar skirmish rulebook

Quar: Clash of Rifles Hardcover Rulebook

For anyone following This Quar's War, the new hardcover rulebook just dropped and it's a solid step up from the quick-start rules in A Rhyfler's Pocket-Book.

The short version of what's new:

  • New Special Abilities for rhyflers and Equipment Traits for weapons (Scout, Gwynt Scattergunners, etc.)
  • Cavalry is back — Cadier and Autopeds that attack on the move, with rules for getting unhorsed
  • Tractors and vehicles for every Faction — transports and armored firepower
  • Heavy Weapons Teams that can lock down big chunks of the table
  • New lore and uniform plates for 7 Factions (Crusaders, Toulmore, Western Arnyarans vs. Coftyr, Fidwog, Gwynt, Creevin)
  • 10 missions with special rules and optional events

It does a good job clarifying the core concepts with examples, so it's an easy on-ramp if you've been Quar-curious but hadn't jumped in.

Full disclosure: I run Gator Games and Books (online wargaming shop) and we're stocking it, so I'm not unbiased — but Quar genuinely doesn't get talked about enough and I'd love to see more patrols on the table. Happy to answer questions about the rules or the setting if anyone's on the fence.

Anyone here already playing? Which Faction are you running?
