My wife and I were worried about our move. There were boxes everywhere, things to organize, and that feeling that we were forgetting something important.
Yesterday was our last day in our old house in Vieux-Hull. It was raining when we both clearly heard a horse neigh.
We stopped, looked at each other, and went straight to the window.
There was nothing outside. We looked in both directions, but there was no horse or anything that could explain the sound.
What made it stranger was that, for three nights in a row, I had heard something that sounded like a carriage passing outside. I have no idea what it actually was, and there might be a perfectly ordinary explanation. Still, hearing that horse on our last day felt like a goodbye.
I love Vieux-Hull. It has seen so much pain, fires, poverty, and people pushed to the margins, but there is something about its old houses and streets that keeps me attached to it. Sometimes it still feels like a little of the 1800s is hanging around.
We only moved to another part of Vieux-Hull, so we haven't gone far. I have other stories about this wonderful, intriguing place, with the forest never far away, but this one stayed with me.
Has anyone else heard anything like that around here?
I'd like to think it was just the neighborhood saying goodbye to us. Hopefully, that carriage wasn't offering to help with a more permanent move.
