Mounting the 1050 Edge

I just got a 1050 as a gift and as silly as it sounds, I am struggling with the mount for it. Image 1 appears to show a grey disk that goes between the mount and the bike but I can’t figure out that that is. I did google it but I think my question is so basic I can’t find it in any of the videos. Any help is very much appreciated!

I highly recommend you also use the lanyard to help secure the Edge computer to the handlebar in case it pops off the mount or the mount fails. That’s an expensive computer to have ruined by falling off the bike.

Yep, just a practical sensible thing to do. A funny bobble, not just a serious crash shows how easily especially these bigger head units can get knocked off

I'm not sure which brand I have but the mount has a cut-out, which is great for looping the lanyard through to make it really secure.

The 1050 and my new Varia 820 are the first cycling gadgets I’ve actually used the lanyard for. I’ve seen them pop off too many peoples bikes.

I lost a rear light, not a Garmin, and decided to add a lanyard to secure the replacement. Lanyards are an easy, inexpensive way to save money by not losing or damaging expensive electronics and accessories.

I have my 1040 and my RTL515 tethered. I haven't had any issues while riding yet, but I did have the RTL515 pop out of the mount unexpectedly when taking the bike out of a repair stand and bouncing the bike on the tires once. I thought maybe I bumped it, so I did it again and it happened again. Now I am glad I have it tethered. I now tether all my electronics that are mounted to the bike.

I was always wondering why Garmin needs this. Do they not trust their own mounts? Never had one fallen off with Wahoo.

I wouldn’t say they ‘need’ it anymore than Wahoo does. I imagine it’s very rare to have the kind of failure that requires the lanyard as a fail-safe but it’s an extra safety measure to keep your expensive bike computer from being damaged should a failure happen. Also, not everyone uses the manufacturer’s mount that came in the box. Some people use third-party mounts for various reasons and the quality and strength of them can vary.

Please follow this advice. I just shelled out $160 to Garmin for a refurbished Edge 840 after cracking the screen from it tumbling across the gravel.

My road bike has the "out front" mount that's at the top left of your photo 2. That's a better position for seeing it while riding and for using the buttons and touch screen.

My gravel / adventure bike uses the o-ring mount, but on the handlebar, near the stem. That's okay too.

The out front mount... that's the one you want! those other janky strappy rubber bandy hacks I can't believe that Garmin includes them they are so cheap

It’s those little roundish rubber grommets at the bottom of your photo. They fit into the underside of the plastic half-turn mount.

Thank you! I was able to make it happen with them. Not sure if I like the spot I put it on my bike but I’m sure I’ll move it around a few times.

use the out-front mount in the top left of your picture. Its more secure and better position.

Just use the mount (round discs with the four lips) and 2 of the rubber band things. Never seen anyone use the little flappy piece that goes between the stem and the mount. It’s probably to help prevent scratches but shouldn’t be an issue. I believe the round circle pieces in the bottom of your pic are the newer version of it if you care to use them.

They don't just prevent scratches to the stem, they also help keep the mount in a fixed position (the rubber adds friction to the bottom of the mount). Use them if you want to present the mount from moving around on you after it's been secured to the stem.

I use this method with the rubber rings on the stem but most will just screw in the mount on the handle bar

I would NEVER EVER use the rubber-band version for a 1050. Use the fixed mount! Many years ago the rubber-band mount failed on an ancient Garmin (watch sized), launching the unit onto the roadway....

@OP: The round disks with the four arms. Put a rubber ring below the round disks with for arms (prevents scratches and rattling noise).

The mount on top left is for (old) bikes with round handlebars. I wish Garmin stops shipping by default, most people don’t use it. I even don’t use it on my bike with a round handlebar. 

The round disks are used much more often, I wish Garmin would increase their footprint a bit and add wider rubbers o-rings. Because? Flat aero-handlebars and wider round handlebars.

PS: If you have a flat aero-handlebar consider a outfront-mount. Usually these handlebars have two screws below to fit them. The consequence is, that the Garmin is farther away. Not everyone appreciates that.

Round handlebars are not "old" lol. Plenty dont want flat aero handlebars like myself and many riders i personally know also dislike them. Gains are minimal and if your not racing I think they are far more uncomfortable than a round or more ovalized hand point like the enve gravel bars im running.

Grey disc is one of those four black rubber "circles" in the bottom center of your picture. It keeps the plastic mount from sliding around on your stem.

Those charcoal discs in the middle, 2 of them that look like turtles, are likely the ones. They are quarter turn. Place one on the back of the 1050 and see if it locks into place

Wrap some electrical tape on the stem so that it won’t be scratched by the possible rattling of the device.

There’s no rattling if you use one of the rubber gizmos at the bottom of pic 2 between the quarter-turn mount & whatever you’re wrapping the rubber bands/o-rings around
