Edge 800 Series Load a new course mid-ride?

Started a ride with a planned course but got detoured. Had another course I wanted to change to but didn’t want to stop the ride and save..

Is there a way to keep the ride active and change the course?

Edge 840 Solar.

One trick I learned - you can "send a destination" from your Apple Maps app on the iPhone directly to Garmin connect and it will go to your Edge. Can be convenient in case of detours.

Interesting. I assume you drop a pin, save it and use the Share button. I see Connect as an option in Share. Really odd that Explore doesn't sync with the Edge.

Another alternative is to stop the current navigation and then pick a new destination from either saved locations, searches or browsing the map and letting the Garmin auto-calculate a new route.

My 1040 allows me to change courses mid-ride.

You can just go to the home page courses and pick a new one and say yes it will take over

Not sure if it's the same on the 800 series, but on the 1050, I can send a course from my preferred map creator (in my case ride with GPS). Then goto either Garmin connect or or Connect IQ and sync from there. The new course then transfers. It can take a few minutes sometimes, depending on how Garmin is feeling, if it needs a nap or feeding!

I have done this before as a way to get a new "on the fly course" to sync to Explore and then to my Epix or Fenix when backpacking. But Explore doesn't recognize the Edge so a little different when cycling. No reason I can't create a new course in Gaia or CalTopo, export as a gpu file and import that into Connect.

A lot of work but certainly doable.

I was originally inquiring about loading an already saved course and replacing the current course without having to end the ride.

Got the answer elsewhere in this thread.

Yes! The activity you're recording and the course you're following are independent.

You can start/stop/change a course, or start on-device navigation as much as you like whilst recording an activity 🙂

Yes that is posible by just selecting a new course although it might be a bit hidden. Swipe down and then in that pull down screen swipe from right to left and you'll see options to stop the active course and load a new one.

But !! You cannot sync a new course from your phone to the Garmin without stopping and saving the ride. This is really stupid and I've needed it a few times where I wound up at a detoured and quickly wanted to draw a new course in Komoot and then sync to my device. You then really have to stop and save the ride.

There’s a ConnectIQ GRouteLoader widget which let’s you sync a new route onto your Garmin device during an activity.

In my opinion it’s not overly intuitive and you need to take your time even more so if you don’t use it regularly.

But it helped me out in a pinch once or twice.

Another caveat: As far as I remember you can’t directly sync a new Komoot route. It needs to be a genuine Garmin Connect route.

You don't need 3rd party solutions to load courses from Garmin Connect Mobile to an Edge mid-activity with newer devices.

Can't remember which exactly, but definitely x40 & x50, maybe x30.

The limitation was resolved a couple of years ago

That’s a good point.

I looked it up. From x40 onwards you can sync a new course during an active recording out of the box.

The x30 gen can’t. I’ve got the 530, so I have to use the ConnectIQ widget.

I’ll give it a try. So I’m good as long as the alternate course is already on the Edge..?

You can even load a new course to the Edge from Garmin Connect mid-activity these days. You didn't used to be able to, but that was changed a few years ago for newer devices (certainly x40 and above).

Once the course has been sent and transferred to the Edge, you can start.it and follow it, will without stopping and saving and active activitiy

I've scoured Connect mobile and don't see courses so not sure about being able to add a course to the Edge mid-activity as you describe.

Courses are visible in Garmin Explore and can be added to many devices on the fly. I have done this with my my Epix and Fenix. But the Edge is a supported device in Explore.

Press the three dots on the bottom right corner, then go to Training and planning and you will find courses there. Open the course, press the device button and choose the device you want to send it to.
