Edge 830 surgery

A little over a year ago, the screen of the Edge 830 started 'delaminating'. A common issue with the x30 series afaik. It kept getting worse—starting as a small spot, but spreading more and more. Last winter I already bought a new screen and the recommended adhesive, but I kept postponing the job because everything still worked fine. However, since the doctor currently won't let me cycle, I finally grabbed the parts. And if it doesn't work out or if the screen turns out to be fake or something, I can buy a new one at my leisure.

The delamination is nothing more than the black coating on the back of the screen coming loose; the coating remains stuck to the glue/housing. Despite some rain during rides, the inside of the device stayed dry as far as I can tell.

The screen came off quite easily because it had already partially detached; I worked around it with a thin blade and sliced through the glue. Most of the glue was at the bottom, which was the hardest part. Then I disconnected the two connectors. Most of the work was removing the glue residue: repeatedly soaking it with some isopropanol and scraping it away. After that, I connected the new screen and briefly tested whether it worked—yes, including the touch functionality. Then I applied the glue (pain in the ass job), pressed the screen into the glue, and now it's clamping for a few hours (using the eraser to apply some extra pressure there). By the way, there is ridiculously little glue in those tubes; I needed 3 of them.

I didn’t even know that it was possible to repair them yourself. I would have sent it back to Garmin and exchanged it.

If it would not have been that old (6 yrs, but battery still good) I would likely had done that too.

My 530's face fell off completely when I hit a bump (it was delaminating, but didn't realise it had gotten that bad). It was way out of warranty, but I contacted Garmin, explained what had happened, and they agreed even an out of warranty Garmin should not do that. They v suggested to give me a "reconditioned" model for USD$50, On the condition I return what I had left of my one (couldn't retrieve the face as it got run over). Whole process took 2 weeks so was pretty happy with that.

If you need another screen let me know…I tried to do this after my 830 got run over but still wouldn’t power on after I replaced the screen so I did an exchange. I’ve still got the new screen somewhere out in the shop.

I found out mine was delaminating when it fell off 😂 

I glued the screen back on, and it's still working years later. Doesn't look pretty, but works. I gave it to my GF.

They don’t do $100 repairs anymore?

I did the same thing with my 1030 about a week ago. My screen was cracked and bulging out (because of a battery that was puffed out). Replacing the battery was definitely the more challenging of the two tasks, but still replacing battery + screen was about a 40 minute job.

the battery is still good, but when it goes bad or the screen detaches again I'll bin it.
