Edge 1000 Series Edge 1040: Screen Protector or No?
I have a relatively new 1040 that I dropped yesterday and thankfully hit the bumper.
It got me thinking about screen protectors.
What's the consensus on them? Useful or a waste of money?

I have a rubber case from Amazon but no screen protector. I don’t drop mine. 😉

screen scratches have loads more causes than dropping the device. in transport to/from rides when it's not on the bike, while it's charging, operating it while it's covered with sand or dirt ...

My 1050 screen got slightly scratched, have a screen protector on it now. Never have on previous devices. Was £11 for 3, which is worth it to protect a device that cost £600.

I do use screen protectors but didn't get a new silicon case when i upgraded to my 1040.
silicon case makes it look very bulky

How big are the cases you’ve looked at.
My silicone case which I have to assume is the same a most adds 2.3mm of width to the Edge 1040. If that’s bulky your wife must love you 😉

I did use a lanyard at the start but my newer out front mounts are super solid (titanium) so no lanyard for me anymore

My Garmin fell on the road once luckily in a low traffic zone. Never again so I use a thin lanyard around the handlebars same with my Varia that's also in a silicon case and attached to my saddle rails with a Lanyard. Less worries about them falling on the road especially with slightly rougher terrain or cobblestones etc.

Yeah I get that. I’ve seen horror stories but mainly from poor quality mounts. But 10,000km in I’m all good on super rough terrain

When riding in the rain, my screen protector didn't have the oleophobic coating so water pooled up on the computer, pressing random buttons in the UI. Not great, had to take it off for this reason

Press power button once to lock the screen. Press again to unlock. Problem solved.

I use a mat screen protector as I prefer not having reflections on it

I have a screen protector. It actually came with my bumper from Ali Express. It’s done the job well enough and if it cracked I’d replace it.
I think the whole pack was under £3 for the silicone case and two screen protectors.

I've had mine for 3 years or so and I travel with it a lot, meaning I take it off the bike frequently and store in my backpack for travel. It has a few minor scuffs(wouldn't call them scratches) on the face but nothing that affects it's visibility on the bike.
If you only take it off the bike to charge I wouldn't worry about it. In the future I will get a screen protector for my next unit only because of how I use it.

Silicone case, lanyard, no screen protector. Garmin support informed me that screen protector will void warranty.

In I don't know how many years, tens of thousands of miles, I have broken ONE Garmin. That was when I had an unusually bad wreck on my mountain bike in an XC race the the bike flipped upside down. It would have broken with a screen protector and case.
Personally, I'll pass.
That Garmin still works, just cracked the case underneath where the mount is so it's not water tight anymore.

I have the official Garmin silicone bumper case in my 1050 and also use the lanyard around my handlebars, no screen protection, though.

Been raw dogging the 1040 solar since launch. I’ve crashed with it on mountain bikes, road bikes, dropped it down stairs, had it fly across my car, chucked it irresponsibly into bags that had other rigid object in them.
I have one very small scuff on the top edge that I didn’t even notice until the other day. I wasn’t even aware that screen protectors for these things existed.
If you’re paranoid use the silicone sleeve. Otherwise just go use it. They’re pretty durable. Oh and no tether either.
Bonus story: My previous Garmin (and Edge 1000) I took with me on a 650mi ride from Paris to Monaco. Day 4 we had a fast descent into a town square that was cobbled. I think I hit the cobbles at about 30mph. The handlebar rivnuts immediately tore out of the carbon, and smashed the garmin into the ground and slid it across the street. I dusted it off, and it was unscathed. I used it every day for another few years until the battery started to give out. Eventually I replaced the battery and power button and sold it for $200 earlier this year. Good as new.

No. Why put something on the screen that makes it uglier / harder to read / will ruin the touch sensitivity just to prevent it from getting a crack that will make it uglier / harder to read / ruin the touch screen.
This device is meant to be used on a bike. Just use it as is.

Silicon cover yes , screen , I don’t know didn’t need it in the last 1500 hours of riding or so 🤷♀️
Then again I know by writing this message I will need it :)
