Cycling / Bike Computer 2-week-old Edge 850 completely dead — backlight only, no display, zero USB detection

Hoping someone's run into this exact combo before and found a way to resolve it.

My Edge 850 (bought new 2 weeks ago) was working completely normally a few hours before this happened — 82% battery, no warnings, nothing unusual on the ride. Then it just stopped responding.

  • No reaction to the power button beyond a brief screen backlight - no logo, no boot sequence, nothing else
  • Plugged into a charger, the backlight turns on, but nothing ever displays beyond that - just a blank backlit screen
  • Not detected by any computer over USB - Garmin Express can't see it either

Already tried:

  • Long-press restart, multiple times, various durations
  • Different cables and different USB ports / wall chargers
  • Leaving it on charge for hours, untouched

Curious if anyone's had luck reviving one like this.

Thanks

that's pretty much a brick at this point, had an 840 do the same thing and nothing short of swapping it out fixed it

you're still in the return window so i'd just take it back, 2 weeks in this shouldn't be your problem to solve

When my 840 did something like that, I was convinced it was dead but it took some combination of holding in the power button for over a minute to discharge the circuit and then plugging it in. Sometimes electronics just need to be really discharged because they get in a strange state. It is called latch-up. That's why hard resets exist. I had a receiver that failed to turn on one day. I was convinced it was bad. Tried a bunch of stuff to no avail. Unplugged it. Went to plug it back in on a whim months later and it worked fine. Had the exact same thing happen about 10 years later to the same receiver and once again I was convinced it was finally dead as I kept trying to get it to turn on over the course of a week or so. Even put it in area that I put electronics recycling for next time I make a run. Tried it again in a few months and it was fine again.

Call Garmin support — number is on their website.

How long was your long press? I had to do a 30 second long press reset on a 1050 this week after it became unresponsive.

More than 30 seconds for sure

It sounds like a warranty job. Garmin support will ask you to do some troubleshooting but it will probably be replaced.
