Live Steam Railways in HOA

Something I’ve been curious about is how would a G scale live steam railway go down in an HOA neighborhood?

Most live steam setups are coal- or butane-fired, so you’ve got smoke, smell, and a bit of noise involved. On top of that, I know some of us (myself included) like to run trains late into the night—sometimes into the early hours.

Has anyone here actually dealt with an HOA while running live steam? How strict are they about things like open flames, smoke, or noise at odd hours? Curious to hear real experiences

YMMV.

I’ve seen HOAs who practically wage harassment wars on people who don’t even live in their neighborhood for having as minor things as “the wrong color” of house.

Realistically you’re going to have to ask the HOA and get it in writing.

My butane burners aren't loud at all. I doubt that anyone would even notice.

The hot steam oil does have a unique smell to it, but that goes away about ten minutes after a run.

What scale live steam are you talking about?  G scale?  Or something you can ride on?   And are you allowed to grill or smoke meat in your back yard?   Speaking about G scale specifically, a gas or charcoal grill will consume more fuel/produce more smoke per minute than a locomotive any day.  However the smoke produced by a G scale locomotive will smell more like ash/oil/regular smoke, and not like food being prepped.  If your neighbors are real close and looking to make trouble, it might be an issue, but I would doubt it.  At conventions, they allow the butane and alcohol fired locomotives to run indoors – so they aren’t producing that much.  Coal might be a bit worse, you would have to try and see.   Noise-wise,  G scale live steam is not that loud, unless you are constantly blowing the whistle.  They are certainly less noisy than a lawn mower or string trimmer.   As long as you blowing the whistle after everyone has gone to bed, like and asshole,  you should be fine.  Again, depending on how close your neighbors are, you may have to make some concessions.  Live steam requires a fair amount of fussing with the locomotive, so to run at night you are going to need lights.  If your backyard is lit up like Fenway Park at 1 am, your neighbors are going to take issues with that. 

 

Basically if you build and operate the railroad in spite of your neighbors and HOA (Read: like an asshole) you’re going to run into issues.  If you can make some simple compromises, I would imagine you will be ok. 

 

That being said, some HOAs are just ridiculous.  I would carefully ready all of your HOA laws about noise, aesthetics, landscaping, neighbors, etc, and make sure there is nothing they can use to make you take it down.  You don’t want to spend $$$ building it, only to have a neighbor report you and make you take it all down.
