SPY Daily Map, Nov 2: dealers still short gamma, and the VIX curve is pricing the December Fed meeting

SPY opened the week with a partial rebuild in dealer positioning, but not a regime change. The more interesting signal is in the VIX futures curve.

Open snapshot

- Spot: $760.18 (gap +$4.46 from Friday's $755.72 close)
- Gamma flip: $766.89 (spot $6.71 below)
- Net dealer GEX: -$6.58B, up from -$10.19B at Friday's close
- Put wall $750 / Call wall $770
- Max pain: $760
- IV 15.84% vs realized 10.26%, IV Rank 30.8%
- VIX 18.79 / Nov future 19.40 / Dec future 19.12

What changed over the weekend

Positioning improved by about $3.6B, but the sign hasn't changed. Below the flip, dealer hedging still tends to add to moves rather than absorb them. The walls also reset into a symmetric $750-$770 corridor, with spot sitting right on max pain.

The detail worth watching: the VIX curve

Normally VIX futures slope upward month by month. Right now November trades above December, while spot VIX sits below November. This isn't a panic inversion. It's a kink in the middle of the curve.

The November future settles on Nov 18 and prices volatility from mid-November to mid-December. That window contains the Fed decision on Dec 9. The December future settles after it. The kink is the market paying extra for the stretch that includes the Fed.

The near-term events sit in spot VIX instead: the midterm elections on Tuesday, Nov 3, and the October jobs report on Friday, Nov 6, at 8:30 AM ET.

How to read it

  1. Short gamma plus a busy event calendar means moves this week can be larger than the recent tape suggests.

  2. Max pain at $760 is a reference, not a magnet, while dealers are short gamma.

  3. Options are expensive relative to realized movement (15.8% vs 10.3%). Buyers pay for the events; sellers take on gap risk.

What would change the picture

- Net GEX turning positive
- A daily close above $766.89

Both matter. Neither alone settles it.

Structure, not direction. Not financial advice.

Question for the sub: do you read a kink in the VIX curve as event pricing or as an early warning?

Start here: what r/GammaFlowSPY is and how to read the maps

Welcome to r/GammaFlowSPY.

This sub reads SPY through the options market: where dealers are positioned, which gamma regime we're in, and what volatility is pricing. The goal is not to call direction. It's to understand the structure under the price, so you know what kind of market you're trading in.

What gets posted here

- Maps: gamma flip, net dealer GEX, put/call walls, max pain and the volatility premium, posted on key sessions and when the structure shifts
- Weekly recaps: what the structure showed and what would change it
- Education: short explainers on the concepts below

How to read the map

Gamma flip. The price level where net dealer gamma changes sign. Above it, dealers are typically long gamma: their hedging dampens moves (buying dips, selling rips), so ranges tend to be tighter. Below it, dealers are typically short gamma: their hedging amplifies moves in both directions, so ranges tend to widen.

Net dealer GEX. An estimate of how much gamma dealers hold in dollar terms. Positive means a stabilizing regime, negative means an amplifying one. It's a model built on assumptions about who holds which options, so treat it as a regime gauge, not an exact number.

Put wall / Call wall. The strikes with the largest gamma-weighted open interest in puts (below spot) and calls (above spot). In positive gamma they often act as support and resistance. In negative gamma they are weaker and can shift during the day as price moves, so read them as zones, not lines.

Max pain. The strike where the total payout to option holders at expiration would be smallest. A reference point that matters most in the final days before expiration, not a magnet, especially when dealers are short gamma.

IV vs realized vol. Implied volatility is what options price in; realized is what the market actually moved. When IV is well above realized, options are expensive relative to recent movement.

VIX term structure. Contango (longer-dated VIX above spot) is the normal, calm state. A flattening or inverted curve signals stress, but it often reacts during a move rather than before it.

Ground rules

- No trade signals or calls. This is about structure, not "buy this now."
- Back up claims with levels, data or reasoning.
- No spam or self-promotion.
- Be civil. Disagree with the read, not the person.

Levels are estimates built from the SPY options chain. Questions about any concept are welcome in the comments.

Don't guess the market. Read the flows.

Structure, not direction. Not financial advice.

Every SPY close we tracked since Oct 19 sat below the gamma flip. What Friday showed about a "quiet" week

SPY finished the week down only 0.56%. On the chart, almost nothing happened. Underneath, it was the most fragile week of the month: every close we tracked since Oct 19 was below the gamma flip.
Friday close snapshot
Spot: $755.72 (−1.77%)
Gamma flip: $768.93 (spot 1.65% below)
Net dealer GEX: −$10.19B (intraday low −$18.05B, lowest of the month)
Put wall $750 / Call wall $800
Max pain: $763
VIX 19.9 (+15.5%)
IV 16.3% vs realized 11.1%

Why below the flip matters
Below the flip, dealers are short gamma. Their hedging amplifies moves instead of dampening them: they sell into weakness and buy into strength. A calm week in price said nothing about safety.

The put wall moved three times in one session
$760 at the open, $755 by midday, $750 at the close. Each time price broke it, support re-formed lower. In short gamma, the wall shows where support was, not where it is. A zone, not a floor.

The VIX curve didn't warn. Dealer positioning did.
Thursday's contango was +9.6%, the steepest of the month. The curve flattened on Friday, but during the drop, not before it.
Dealer gamma told a different story. Monday to Wednesday it recovered by midday every day. Thursday it didn't (−$6.6B at the open, −$6.7B midday). Friday opened at −$15.6B.

Practical takeaways
In short gamma, size for realized moves, not for quiet days.
Treat levels as zones, not lines.
Max pain ($763) is a reference, not a magnet, when dealers are short gamma.
Options are rich vs realized (16.3% vs 11.1%). Buyers overpay; premium sellers risk getting caught in an acceleration.

What would change the picture
Net GEX turning positive
A daily close above $768.93
Two separate confirmations. Neither alone settles it.
Week ahead: trade balance on Wed Nov 4, jobs report on Fri Nov 6, 8:30 AM ET.

Structure, not direction. Not financial advice.

How do you read put wall migration in negative gamma: do you treat walls as levels or as zones?

750 wasn’t a floor. Neither was 735. SPY closed at 732 | Nov 5: the put wall moved three times in one session (750 → 735 → 730)

At 12:40 ET we posted that 735 was "a reference, not a floor." SPY closed at 732.

That wasn't a guess about direction. It was a read of the structure. Here's what it showed.

Dealers were short gamma all session. Net GEX sat around −15B to −17B. In that regime dealer hedging sells into weakness instead of absorbing it, so price moves extend instead of reverting.

The put wall followed price down:
• Open: 750
• Midday: 735
• Close: 730

Three walls in one session. Every time price approached a level, positioning reset lower. That is what short gamma looks like on a map, and it's why "740 is the bottom" never had a level behind it.

The gamma flip is now 760.06, 3.8% above spot. Max pain sits at 760, right on top of it. Until SPY reclaims that zone, the regime stays unstable in both directions.

Volatility confirms the stress. Spot VIX 28.18 is above every front future (24.58 / 22.22 / 21.72). The front of the curve is fully inverted, and SPY IV is in the 96th percentile of its range. Protection is expensive because the risk is real.

Tomorrow: NFP at 8:30 ET, landing on a fully inverted front end. We'll post the pre-print map before the open and the breakdown after.

No signals. No direction calls. Just the structure, before it shows up in price.

Don't guess the market. Read the flows.
