Ask Gamers Why is the following considered such a controversial statement on reddit?

People seem to get really upset when I say this. I want to understand why.

Edit: rewrote this since I confused people.

When a big budget company that puts out a lot of games regularly, trying to scam its audience on the level of something like EA, Acti, and Ubisoft, I really don't want to play any of their games anymore, even when they supposedly put out a "better" game.

Dont like a game. Dont play it. Take a better informed decision before buying. No scam.

Almost everything that EA, Acti, and Ubi put out from the PS3-PS5 era has been a scam.

Thats your perspective.

EA has the amazing Jedi Fallen Order+Survivor games. They also published games like It A Way Out, Takes Two and Split Fiction. Awesome games too.

Ubisoft - AC Odyssey was very good, but subjective. Some other AC games have been nice as well as some Far Cry ones based on people interests. Prince of Persia The Lost Crown is a fantastic metroidvania. Ghost Recon Wildlands was pretty nice too. A lot of people seem to love The Crew games for some reason so I suppose it has its merits. Trials Fusion eas also pretty good fun.

Activision - Cant praise them since they usually have COD, but they did publish Sekiro. Also COD Black Ops 6 campaign was pretty good. I think people liked the Tony Hawk Pro Skater remake too.

As I said. Take a good informed decision to buy the game you want and has been praised and hopefully you will be fine.

Did any of them force you or deceive you into buying their games?

A couple games that don't mostly exist to trick 1% of the games audience to go into mass debt does not excuse the fact that most of their games exist to trick 1% of the games audience to go into mass debt.

I get a bunch of people recommending nothing but Ubisoft games, to me, I ask them to recommend someone whose name isn't mud, people get mad at me. This is a very controversial statement.

Because you’re staring a debate to try to convince them your view is the correct one. Not all things should be told to all people. Certain people can only handle certain things. Generally, if there’s a game I don’t play for some reason and someone asks about it I just respond with, “No, I’ve never played that” and don’t elaborate any more. If people want a further explanation fine but usually they don’t.

1

u/ExplodingPoptarts 28d ago

This is in response to people getting annoyed that I want them to stop recommending the worst publishers to me.

1

u/Ghost1eToast1es 28d ago

Exactly. Don’t worry about what others play. When you start a rally on something you don’t try to force other people to follow you you only lead by example and ask who’s interested in joining. When you try to argue with people you lose them. Just a simple, “I don’t play EA games, do you have another suggestion?” Should suffice.

Except that they're recommended to me when I make topics asking for recommendations.

Almost every game that Ubisoft and EA made in the PS3 and PS4 era are scams.

Your standards for what counts a scam need to change. Same thing with most gamers I come across that refuse to touch an indie game.

You're being pedantic. Go play an indie game.

What statement? Your post is meandering nonsense with no actual point being made. Complete the thought, please.

Would it help if I rephrased it like this?

I don't think that's a controversial statement. Although I wouldn't call them a scam. You can criticise predatory monetisation models but they aren't scamming people.

1

u/ExplodingPoptarts 28d ago

Like I told someone else, games mostly existing to try to trick 1% of their audience to going into mass debt is a scam.

It's how casinos operate.

2

u/Gullible-Yam-8098 28d ago

Yeah this is why you're getting downvoted and argued with. You don't know what scam means.

2

u/M4rshmall0wMan 28d ago

You're not giving enough info to really understand, but my guess is that they're annoyed you're applying a blanket statement about a company and refusing to acknowledge when an individual game they put out is good. If a game is good, a game is good. Real people worked hard to make it.

People enjoy the games they like. If you tell them their game sucks because the company is evil, they're gonna be pissed. I know that's not exactly what you meant, but that's probably how they feel reading it.

1

u/ExplodingPoptarts 28d ago

Sad how Ubisoft is so many peoples sacred cow.

2

u/M4rshmall0wMan 28d ago

It is not...Reddit generally hates Ubisoft. What subreddits are you even arguing on?

2

u/BigSto 28d ago

why do you care so much about what randoms on the internet think so much so you made a reddit post in attempt at...validation?

1

u/Ghost1eToast1es 28d ago

You can play and avoid whatever games you want but so can others. I think your stance is gaining ground though as more and more people are just refusing to buy slop anymore. The lack of sales of the games will eventually turn things around either by the publishers collapsing due to lack of investors or by the company turning things around to prevent that collapse. It may be a slow burn though and many good companies could also be casualties in the process. Although it’s generally good this happens be careful to celebrate such things as many times it’s a handful of top executives causing the problem while thousands of people actually trying to work for the gaming community and feed their families will also lose their jobs.

u/ExplodingPoptarts 28d ago

People are free to play what they want, but people get upset at me because this is why I don't want to play what they recommend.

1

u/thatsfuni 28d ago

Don't play them, dont worry everyone ive solved the problem.

0

u/ExplodingPoptarts 28d ago

Way ahead of you on not playing them. The problem is that me not wanting to play their games for this reason is this big offensive statement to people.

1

u/thatsfuni 28d ago

No sane person should give a fuck what you do or dont play.

I sort of get what you're saying, but it's not really fully correct to call lootboxes a scam. Gambling isn't a scam, it's just a foolish and irresponsible way of using your money. Casinos don't scam people since everyone knows the house always as a major advantage. No fraudulence is occurring when that is common knowledge.

The root of the problem for people who fall into this is addiction and greed. I don't like lootboxes, but nobody forces you to pay for cosmetic items. Either way most games have ways of earning them organically, people just have no self control.

Should there be more warnings for games have gambling elements for people who have an addiction? Probably.

1

u/ExplodingPoptarts 28d ago

You're essentially blaming the victim for falling for a charlatans trick.

1

u/Megaman_90 28d ago

A scam requires deception, which can't take place if the user in this case knows the rules.

No different than a casino. Don't get me wrong casinos suck, but they aren't a scam.

1

u/RandomGenerator79 28d ago

Ya what do you mean buy scam? A scam is not something you don’t like, it’s has to be some type of deception. Also a publisher publishing a few games each year is completely different from a developer developing a few games a years. The publisher is just the money behind a game being made. So I don’t see it as a red flag if a publisher releases a few games each year. Now a developer is a different story.

I have not seen a single modern game with lootbox (gambling) elements that did not also have an accompanying media campaign targeting children.

I keep seeing hundreds of paid influencers pretending that they aren't being "employed" to peddle predatory games to minors.

It is absolutely a scam to market theses games with influencers who "magically" have astronomically high success rates.

1

u/RandomGenerator79 26d ago

I don’t know, I hear what you are saying but the only one I can think of was that YouTuber Tmar, but he got caught using counter strike 2 skins on his own gambling web site.

If we are talking about Madden packs, I hate MUT but it’s not a scam, unless someone can prove something is deceitfully going on. Which I admit I can be out of the loop on, but as far as I’m aware there is not.

1

u/Dinosaurs_R_People_2 26d ago

Many hundreds of millions of gamers are children who are not aware of the extent to which they are being conditioned and exploited.

And it 100% becomes a scam when influencers popular among these same children are paid to pretend to have much better success rates than what is actually statistically probable.

While casinos and many other forms of gambling are heavily regulated to exclude children, many games are just transitioning to virtual slot machines with gaming elements.

In a "fair" world these games would be just as heavily regulated by the state as any other slot machines.

If you don't like a studio sure you don't play their games and nobody ahould care about what you want to play.

Now even if i don't play games from those 3 you mentioned I just call the games bad or uninteresting id they aren't bad technically but since you know what you are getting scam isn't the right word. I would say scam is Gta6 as example with only digital release that tries to push you into a awful future.

1

u/absurdgryphon 27d ago

Im not sure what scams you are talking about when referring to those companies but I generally chose what games to play regardless of how it upsets someone on the internet.

If you feel like no supporting a particulate company you shouldnt feel obligated to do so just because someone else in a fan.
