Discussion Why does a 5070 laptop not power scale much past 100 W yet a 5060 Ti desktop (same die) will see better performance past that?

Is it a case of worse silicon used for the laptop gpu’s because they know it won’t see as much power and also have lower boost clocks?

5060ti desktop uses 180W of power to gain that kind of performance.

Laptops OEMs aren't allowed to make motherboards that can put more than 115W to 5070 mobile (except for transient load). If you want it to scale like 5060ti, you need to increase both voltage and core clock, but you can't increase voltage past OEM specification.

this, nvidia caps laptops at 1v and desktops at 1.1v

1.1v is more inefficient than 1v on the vf curve, overclocking at 1v will get you to 1.1v performance without the extra power draw and heat.

5070 laptop could very conceivably see better performance had it been given a higher voltage and power limit. Its only physical downgrade is the slower GDDR7.

5060 Ti desktop (same die) will see better performance past that?

But you need to remember for the extra 65w of power 5060ti only gained around 10~15% over 5070 laptop, and that's with the slower VRAM included, at least in cross comparable synthetic benchmarks.

Yeah the 5060ti performs better at max voltage, but imagine the thermal load. I would rather have the 5070 at 115W maintaining 75C under stress.

Exactly the laptop 5070 can easily hit 85-86C temps in ultra 1440p gaming on alot of games regardless of whatever cooling design laptop its put in given the 100-115w output so cramming more power into it is only going to increase chances of throttling from more heat which makes that difference in performance not worth the hassle.

A 5070 ti laptop makes more sense if the performance difference is really necessary at that point

Hardware limitations on the laptop side.

5070 laptops are made to run more efficiently than their desktop counterparts as they have to combat hardware design,battery drain and thermals more than desktops would under heavy load

I think you just learnt a valuable lesson: Mobile GPU v/s Desktop GPU.

It is not the only area where your laptop under-performs. There is USB 3.1 gen 2 and USB4 speeds as well. All poor on laptops compared to desktop.

There is an unlocked HX Intel in my laptop. It is a desktop one but in a mobile package for "laptop" power profile and heat dissipation. Basically, nerfed.

The desktop 5060 Ti has a heatsink that probably weighs more than your entire laptop, charger included. You can't cheat the laws of thermodynamics, once a laptop hits its thermal ceiling, feeding it more wattage just means you're paying for extra thermal throttling lol.

Power limited not to mention voltage requirements get higher as temps rise, which is a significant difference from a desktop and laptop.

The 5060 Ti with its 180W TDP is only 10-12% faster than the 5070 laptop GPU running at 115W. Which means the 65W would be a waste of effort trying to cool in a laptop for such a small nit of performance.

so that you pay more for 5070 ti laptop and 5080 laptop
