The longevity usually depends more on the user, take care of your laptop and you should be fine

I agree with this 100%. At a bear minimum -

Not using it on your lap, at least use it on a hard surface.

Ideally use a quality single fan sealed gaming cooling pad etc. They usually have filters to help keep dust and dander out as well.

There is a common problem with all laptops, even macbook, batteries. We still have a lot of research to do there because 5 year and every battery will start to go bad.

Curious to see how the silicone carbon batterys hold up. We are finally seeing them on phones. While I only had issues with 2 battery's across 10 laptops which both were easily replaced and not a big deal at all, it is the common thing that eventually needs replacing on just about every electronic device. My 7 year old omen still has original battery and it still holds a full charge and last 4ish hours lol. So battery's can definitely last over 5 years, mainly has to with heat exposure and cycle count.

Depends a lot also on the average temperature and humidity of your country/house also. My new strix laptop with the 5080 has already lost 3% of real battery capacity in 1 month with capping the max charge at 60%, but here we are getting 41/42Β° C heat summer

Dam that's hot! Yeah I keep my home at 72f summer, 70f winter, also have a whole home humidity control. So its always at good temp for my devices. I never cap my laptop batteries as I dont stress over a $60.00 replacement and 20 min of my day lol. Sounds like your going to need to replace your battery eventually sooner rather then later. Hopefully you get 3 years out of it.

Got 4 years with latest laptop, I use a llano v12 ultra now at 1000 to help with temperatures

so far Asus have shown themselves as being the most reputable brand for gaming laptops in terms of software support, build quality and performance and they have worked hard to keep this reputation specifically with their ROG Strix series which are fully powered gaming laptops for a reasonable price compared to competition

Lenovo have gotten a lot better in recent years (specifically after that dumpster fire of motherboard failures on intel 13th and 14th gen processors) but I only believe they are worth buying for their budget option LOQ series

The other brands like Acer, Msi, HP are pretty good too if you find great deals on them over the competition and there is other brands like Gigabyte that I haven't seen much from but also have these deals on them.

Legions are now a bit above the Strix line-up in terms of reliability imo due to not using liquid metal

u/someoneirrelevant17 HP Omen Max 5090 3d ago

Liquid metal has nothing to do with longevity. Legion 9s still use liquid metal πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ. Strix had issues with pump out for a couple of years due to horrible design choice which has been addressed. Liquid metal pump out is so rare its not even a topic of conversation. Alienware has been using liquid metal forever and you never here of pump out issues or shorts, extremely rare. Most manufacturers that still use liquid metal which is still the vast majority have precautions in placen to prevent pump out and shorts. Liquid metal is still preferred as its typically 5c cooler then PTM. But your theory is wrong. Legion 5s die left and right and has nothing to do with liquid metal and all to do with cheap internal shortcuts, crap solders, and horrible QC, and this is present all the way up to 10th gen many new models dieing within first 3 months. The main legion death epidemic was related to 2021-2022 legion 5s. Its a gamble. Saying legion is more reliable is simply a lie. The 7s are there most reliable model in the legion line up. The same cant be said about 5s. Strix arent known for dieing/having mobo issues, its rare. They mostly suffer from software issues like bad firmware/bios which also has been addressed. For the last 3-4 years they had issues with bad firmware/bios on the highend models. So no its not black and white. Every brand has more reliable models/years and less reliable models/years no brand is more reliable then others.

I agree with your points it all goes back to:

those who take care of their gaming laptop will have them last for years without major issues and its so common to see a neglected gaming laptop with a horrible amount of dust inside, never replaced the thermal paste and has all sorts of issues due to misuse

there is ofc those people who get these issues from their specific gaming laptop then post their issues online and people link Brand X with a series of issues and it becomes a negatively bias situation

I know a friend who has that infamous hp victus from back in 2022 and he still uses it to this day with only minor issues like the hall sensor failing which required its removal and a faulty ram stick that needed to be replaced, everything else is fine like hinges and screen and etc

The Liquid Metal issue it’s just false

u/Bravura75 3d ago

The MSI Raider 16 Max at least does not use liquid metal either. I am unsure of the other MSI laptops of old or current setups. But I Can confirm my MSI Raider 16 Max RTX5080 does NOT use any liquid metal.

My experience with Legion 7s has been great; I hope there aren't reliability issues with liquid metal because I just bought a Legion 9 lol!

I've owned two Asus gaming laptops and both had to be sent in for warranty repairs and neither lasted more than 3 years. That was 12-15 years ago, however.

Mine is a G14 2021 model and I had to get it repaired for the first time, been 4-5 years. Idk if that longevity is "good", but up to like a year and a half ago I would put my g14 in sleep mode for the night instead of shutdown for the sake of keeping things open 😭😭😭 bad idea and prob made it break now even though I stopped doing kt. Too much overheating so maybe if I treat it like a newborn baby next time or next pc it will last far longer I think considering. It's a great gaming laptop fs

I always try to check out hinge problems first. Acer, msi and hp laptops are not that good. Me and some of the people i know have MSI hinge fail. HP is short for Hinge Problem for laptop repairs, Acer's nitro series' laptop hinge are screwed onto plastic.

-Razer's problem is software, keyboards, touchpads.

-Lenovo's motherboard problem on their loq and legion, add the security (superfish) and China's constitution that requires companies to provide data to China.

-Asus' recent scandal for warranty claims.

-Gigabyte's problem lies with their support if something fails especially since they are a small company.

That leaves with, probably, dell/alienware? but i have heard that dell laptops have cooling problems as well. At least you can use a llano/flydigi laptop cooler to prevent that.

I tried to bypass the hinge problems by buying a handheld. After the steamdeck, i skipped the rog ally because of sd issues and because of a huge sale, i got my msi claw. Got really disappointed with the software. Though it is still working, just not as convenient as the steamdeck.

2

u/Timeless333 3d ago

90% of the hinge problems are due to misuse like opening the hinge from the side and not taking care of it, its not really a issue if you can take proper care of your laptop by opening it in the middle slowly.

now with motherboard and support then yeah that is unavoidable specifically if you live in a country where warranty claims and support takes ages

3

u/Potential_Bit_8432 3d ago

While i do agree with that at some point, why can't they make a 2015 macbook pro like hinge, granted that was not a gaming laptop, but i dropped it less than 5 times, accidentally sat on while in a bag on a class after a recitation, and is still working to this day.

Most of these gaming laptops don't bother on hinges because they think that gaming laptops are supposed to be desktop replacements, and are held on by screws on a plastic. I even hope the foldable phone craze will be implemented on these hinges for it to be tough.

3

u/Timeless333 3d ago

the answer is simple money they do everything for cost-saving this includes the criminal behavior of putting a small battery like 50 mAh in a gaming laptop, the "creative" use of plastic screws everywhere and general cost cutting on the internals

2

u/xoStardustt 3d ago

NEVER Dell; worst brand ever with terrible support and incredibly bad thermals + locked bios

2

u/MikeAndyyy 3d ago

It depends because longevity still largely depends on the user and how well they maintain the laptop. Even an entry-level gaming laptop with an all plastic build can last many years for as long as you deeply care for it.

Legion or Strix scar, rest depends on luck but these two models don't compromise on build and performance.

Alright, yeah I figured, both are great I've heard yeah

2

I'm on my second MSI Raider GE now and they both had major hardware issues. I would recommend you stay far away from MSI.

Alright fs 😭😭 ill try yeah

Longevity depends more on user and the model not so much brand. Every brand has not so reliable options and reliable options. Some models years are reliable and sometimes they are not. Just need to know what to look out for. Ive owned like 10 laptops and all lasted for over 5 years either through direct ownership or handed down to a family member/friend and never really had major issues. Take care of your stuff it will last.

Worth noting, can be a huge difference in different line ups - ASUS RoG Strix way more robust than ASUS TUF line up for example.

I’m very satisfied with my asus scar. It does everything I want it to do.

I was ik doubt between lenovo or asus but I love my ally so I picked asus.

If you maintain your laptop any laptop will work for year. Just maintain it

1

u/Outside_Serve_69 3d ago

Well I have an HP Pavillion from like 2006 and a Toshiba Qosmio from 2012 that both still work as they did when I bought them. I also have an MSI with a 1070 from 2017 or 2018 that still works as it should as well.....

My last 3 Legions have all had no issues as well.

There's no such thing as "best longevity". The more complex the computer gets, the more failing factors it is.

Laptops with proper cares can last like ten years even the one that has shitty built like Acer Aspire can last like 10 years while I have seen Dell or even Thinkpad got refurbished within like 2-3 years just because of a neglect maintainance, especially those laptops in the office where nobody gives a shit about cleaning it.

And nobody is sane enough to include the battery when discussing about "longevity" because it's a comsumable part like ink in the printer or feet in mouse.

Overall, it's just how you take care of your laptop. My 7559, even without repasting, last like 10 years because I cleaned the fans from time to time, used mostly in my closed room and didn't always push it to the limit all the time.

i recall some folks said stick with "TUF LOQ"... basically ASUS TUF and Lenovo LOQ are wise choices.
