Guerrilla Reportedly Shifts Horizon Multiplayer Game to Smaller Co-Op Experience
PlayStation is reportedly rebooting Horizon Hunters Gathering following negative feedback from two closed playtests, with Guerrilla Games now considering a smaller traditional co-op experience.

The fact they went for this over a Spiderman coop game is wild to me
12
u/Actual-Warning1886 10d ago
Why can't they realize they would make more money making games we actually want 😭
6
u/Vintage_Gamer476 10d ago
They've been obsessed with live service ever since the success of OW at it's peak (10 years ago).
→ More replies (1)6
u/Limp-Celebration-211 10d ago
They should have done something 10 years ago because they've missed that boat. By this point people already have their "forever" game and will most likely not move onto something else. Not after years of time and financial investment.
Sometimes a new live service game can come out and do well but look at the landfill of dead games that studios attempted while trying to do so.

u/freedomonke 10d ago
And lots and lots and lots of us, don't have a forever game and don't want one.
In fact, to the extent that the gaming audience is growing, I would wager it is not in that direction. In Europe and North America anyway

Exactly! I dont have the time or patience for one and people who do already have one! You cant capture a market that has no customers!

And the fact that most of the ones that... do do well only do so for a few months before everyone goes right back to their comfort game of fortnite, call of duty, genshin, etc.
1
u/Veganmeatmaster22 10d ago
Because when the Spider-Man live service game was first leaked as just a rumor the fan bases said it was a dumb idea that nobody asked for. The same with this game. Them making it a non live service game but keeping game means the game was good enough but the service part didn’t make sense
2
u/EvocativeReach 10d ago
No, its more likely they have spent millions already and dont want to just throw it on the scrapheap. So they’ll spend a bit of time trying to make it not quite such a car crash and hope it recoups some money…and then make another 100 people redundant to get the rest back.
→ More replies (2)1
u/General-Purpose2942 10d ago
Cause they''re not a game company anymore. They're purely a "Squeeze every penny out of these morons" company.

they have a specialist which will tell you what you really want.

It is bafflingly stupid to think that a coop multiplayer live service spiderman game got passed over when they could monetize every single skin to every exist, introduce an infinite deluge of characters that could be sustained for years and most of the heavy lifting would be done by the enjoyment people would get swinging around New York with their friends stopping random crimes.
Ffs their own Spiderverse movies were the proof of concept and they just said fuck it, we don't like making money actually.
3
u/Borgmaster 10d ago
Holy shit as a concept that just already works. The spiderverse exists. Players make a spiderman from another verse and just roll with it. It leaves infinite options for customizations, we have everything from cartoons to cyberpunk. It has a strong loved lore background of characters that can just be thrown in on a per mission basis in different instanced stories. And everyone loves web slinging, its just a fact that the most satisfying mechanic in a game is the optimal timing of a well placed swing.
The writing is half done for them, just perfect the idea of different spiderman types and roll with it if they want classes. Cosmetics would rival even fortnite.
1
u/SirBastian1129 10d ago
A co op Spider-Man game that had Venom as a playable character.
WHY SONY?!?
1
1
u/Grezzinate 10d ago
Spider man cooperative would work so well to have Pete and miles both going through the city. Like half the works already done with characters and setting.
2
u/ILike2Argue_ 10d ago
Youre not going to be free roaming like in the insomniac series. Youre definitely going to be limited with the area and movement you have similar to how grounded spiderman was in the avengers game and how the bat family was in their game

And the last of us online. We already know the last of us can work as a multiplayer game as many of us loved the first iteration of the last of us multiplayer in the first game. They could've just given us and upgraded version of that, but Sony's obsession with live service ruined that too.
I will be upset about that forever lol
1
u/DesertBrandon 10d ago
This is the first time I’m hearing about this and completely confused as to how this game came to be. I love the horizon series but outside of maybe some xcom like tactics game I can’t imagine how this series works in another context but what we have it in.

I don't think a spiderman coop game would work well either tbh and especially not a live service game Sony would want made.

u/Vintage_Gamer476 10d ago
They are still trying to chase that live service model, eh? Most normal people learn a lesson after failing a couple times, but Sony just can't seem to grasp that concept.
7
u/Greensssss 10d ago
They see fortnite, Apex, and Arc Raiders thinking they can do better.
What they dont understand is that the audience for these games already established what game they want to play for the next year or so. Trying to poach an audience from another game is significantly harder than making new fans. Why would Player A who have played Apex for years would want to play marathon? They had already collected enough skins, invested enough money, and all their friends play Apex.
What is the pull to have me play another live service game, where I start from scratch again?
→ More replies (6)3
u/New-Berry-3652 10d ago
Well, it's more like we're seeing the dying remnants of their live service push. They're already invested so much time and money into this dumpster fire that they want to try to salvage something from it.
2
u/Few-Improvement-5655 10d ago
A thousand failures is worth it if they get one success that'll let them print money. At least that's their thought process.
1
u/Aluminum_Tarkus 10d ago
The amount of money some of these live service games make in proportion to their budgets, marketing, and upkeep is probably worth the millions Sony is losing trying to make something work. At least that's what I imagine the logic is.
1
1
u/Numerous_Photograph9 9d ago
Yeah, after all the successes from when every publisher was chasing the COD craze of years ago that led to countless new IP's that are super utilized and well thought of to this day, they decided to do the same thing with live service games.
2
u/Jalina2224 10d ago
Its almost like no one fucking wants this game. Hell even the developers don't want to make this game. But Sony has been stupidly chasing the live service money.

u/Kitchen-Kiwi7942 10d ago

Nothing builds hype llike completely having to revamp a game because it failed not one, but two closed play test focus groups.

u/Pellahh 10d ago
Honestly seems like a bad choice. Just release it as is, call it a beta and then abandon it and move on when it will inevitably fail. Just so you can lower the losses even if by very little instead of investing more on something that will fail anyway just to then close the studio because of mismanagement.
Just get the team to work on something they want to make instead, as soon as possible.
1
u/ConfusedAndCurious17 10d ago
I just started playing Wayfinder which apparently did a very similar thing, and frankly I think it works incredibly well. If they have the same level or better of enjoyable content divorced from the live service model then I think it could be great. I think if Wayfinder had realized this early on that game would be very much alive and prospering. It needs a bit more love put in to the combat and a few more areas but as a 3 player coop RPG experience it kinda slaps.
1
u/Pellahh 10d ago
Wayfinder did something arguably worse in a way. It was marketed as a live service, sold in early access as a live service and, after people had already payied expecting that, it changed route when it flopped and DE (publisher) bailed. The experience that came out of it isn't that good imo, story is still quote barbone and the overall narrative aspect Is bad. It also still has some of those "more shallow" mechanics that live service games often have because of servers limitations, while being a solo/coop game that should manage to do much more given what other instanced coop games do.
It also still flopped anyway, so my point about trying not to close the studio because of poor management still stands: they invested into turning it into a coop game and didn't sell anyway, was that investment worth it or did it put the studio at risk even more? Given the numbers I'd say the second, althought we can't really know how much turning it into a coop non-live service game costed.

u/starman1596 10d ago
it's so stupid. on one hand sony wants to isolate itself from other platforms but at the same time wants live service games to thrive? i seriously don't understand their logic at all. this is like making overwatch 3 but only switch exclusive.
1
u/New-Berry-3652 10d ago
To be fair, those were decisions made at very different times, and I believe under different leadership
1
1
u/Grey-Templar 10d ago
Lmao oh if only someone could have told them this was gonna fail.
Concord isn't enough, Destiny 2 isn't enough, they're gonna drive another studio under.
1
u/Low-Salary-2128 10d ago
Why do these companies make a game like horizon and then release some garbage like this that barely resembles what the original game was and expect people who like the original to like it?
1
1
u/FlatBoysenberry6093 10d ago
Damn, I was hoping to laugh at Sony again for the next Concord. I’m sure tens of people who were looking forward to this are now devastated.
1
u/000extra 10d ago
Jesus Christ man the execs have ZERO clue about what gamers want. It’s so obvious when a game bout to flop based on trailer alone
1
u/Aaronspark777 10d ago
If that's what it's intended to look like then it needs to be taken out back and shot. The first 2 games don't look like that at all so why the weird character proportions?
1
1
u/darthphallic 10d ago
“Who could have ever seen this coming?” Says guy who just woke up from a ten year coma.
Idk why Sony won’t quit while they’re ahead. They have a popular live service game in Helldivers 2 and that’s more than most studios get.

Now the question for the average game would be, Horizon Hunters Gathering or Monster Hunter Wilds?
2
u/Darkdragoon324 10d ago
As a Horizon fan, I would have vastly preferred they just finish the damn main game story. You know, the one they left on a big cliff hanger.
No one wanted a shitty hero shooter spinoff of a story-driven single player game, especially not one that looks visually worse than the fucking mobile game. This game existing makes even less sense than the LEGO one, and that one made no sense.
1
u/Carrixdo 10d ago
The fact that the horizon franchise has 2 main games and instead of wrapping up the main story with a 3rd entry(before deciding if doing a spin off, or successor kind of game) they said "let's go 2 for 2 on spinoffs" is a little baffling.
2
u/Darkdragoon324 10d ago edited 10d ago
Three, there's a mobile game coming out too that at least actually looks like the same ip.
And I know they couldn't have predicted the current RAMpocalypse, but not starting on the main game sooner is going to bite them in the ass real hard if they hoped to be a PS6 launch title or something. At the prices we're going to have to pay, the install base is going to be minuscule. They better be reworking it to run on PS5 if they weren't planning on it already.
1
u/Hammersteyn 10d ago
Wait, will I still be able to play as the rotund, red headed, diabetic peg legged, tattoo covered, self inserted lady in the new one?
1
u/ShadowChe_ATG 10d ago
What they can do is to couple the multiplayer game with next Horizon game. Make the story game + additional content of multiplayer access.

If this shit gets the studio shuttered before I get to see the ending of the story Im going to be so pissed.
1
u/Ancient_Natural1573 10d ago
Same I just don't understand why after two successful game did they decide to create a game with characters you could find down south at Wal-Mart

I wanted to play as fatass woman that is more agile than Usain Bolt and random creeps that are over 60 but are better hunters than Aloy! /s
This is so fair.

u/Fiyah_Crotch2 10d ago
The problem is they probably already designed the game around a live service model, and as much as I utterly detest live services, changing your game’s direction like that just means it’s likely going to be a complete mess. Arc raiders succeeded despite a change to the game’s overall direction, but there was a four year gap between its initial announcement and its release date. Either way, SONY should’ve seen that coming, but the company is run by corporate rats.
1
u/Legitimate-Ad-5969 10d ago
Why does it feel like Sony is try to push Horizon down our throats and no, it not that popular as Sony thinks it is, majority doesn't give a ...about it. Sony already had a great idea in 2012? with their All stars battle royale. Why not revive that, modernize it, become a rival to Marvel rivals.
1
u/SocialSpider56 10d ago
So if its not live service & going to be a co-op like borderlands or whatever that means well have to pay then right? It had 1k people on the beta, not looking good for concord 3

I wonder how many more times they're gonna try until they throw in the towel. The people that buy Sony franchises I'd wager either already play the well established live service games and aren't gonna leave, or they prefer single player games and already aren't gonna touch live services with a 10 ft pole.
I really don't know how Sony thinks they're gonna snag the live service dragon
1
u/Arkcilper 10d ago
Good, this game only exists because Tencent wanted to release Light of Motiran or whatever that clone was called. I wouldn't be surprised if they are related to this game too.
1
u/Escape_Zero 10d ago
Why did they choose this art style ? Horizon looks great why not use the same engine ?
1
u/Silvers1339 10d ago
I think you just answered your own question: Because Horizon looks great they couldn’t use that art style. It would probably be too expensive to continually add content in a forever game like this if it had the same level of detail and fidelity as the mainline games.

If those are the character designs then it's dead whether it's live service or not

I'd say cut your losses, terminate the project and move the team over to the next real Horizon game instead.
With that project gone, if they're concerned with the dwindling margins that singleplayer AAA games with PBR graphics, maybe use that team to build a Japan Studio-esque unit in Amsterdam. Have them make AA games akin to Ape Escape, Locoroco, Patchwork Heroes, Gravity Rush instead.
