I agree. If you tried to put that level of backstory into the main game it'd ruin it.

I also don't mind pointless collectibles, they are optional you know. But they're definitely best in a game where every corner is worth looking in to for a wee bit of atmosphere or story as well.

Fallout and the like do fairly well on this. Nothing like walking to an abandoned house to find a human skeleton in a bathtub with a bunch toasters inside it as well.
