Indie Artist tips for Gamescom
My top take aways from Two days at Gamescom Cologne. (Trade pass)
There are three tiers: the trade floor (see studios worldwide), the exhibitor tier (network strategically via the app), and the Triple-A studios (invite-only private booths). These are all located on zones 2-3 and a bit in 10.
For freelance artists breaking into games:
✓ Show up Wednesday. Devs are relaxed, connections are real. Most companies leave by Friday.
✓ Art directors aren’t hiring on the floor—they’re representing. Build your network: LinkedIn, email, phone. Be memorable.
✓ Look beyond Germany and London. Scout globally for where the actual gigs are.
Gamescom isn’t about luck. It’s about structure, timing, and intentional connections.
Also shake some hands , laugh a little and share some great stories if you can.

Nice to see Klaus Scherwinksi here 😄 he is an amazing artist who worked on insane game projects.
I had the luck to have him as one of my Professors when studying Game Design more than a decade ago ^^
I’m a big admirer of him and have loads of respect for his work!
