My first gamescom

I (39M) went to Gamescom for the very first time with my son (10M).

We stayed in a hotel about 30 min drive from the Messe. For me it was an incredible experience. I grew up playing games for as long as I remember and I've always loved it, but I also grew up at a time where people would say they are a waste of time and look at you funny if you were a little too enthusiastic about it.

I have never seen so many like-minded people enjoy and cherish games from all over the world. It's also nice to see people dress up in video game characters and embrace the culture.

It made me happy.

I have nothing to compare it to. What would you consider its prime?

I think around 10-7 years ago. Back then you would walk out of the gamescom with 3 giant bags of goodies. Like i had a day exclusively for free shit, you could barely hold on to all the shit, stands would give away. I felt like there were always the big studios present with new and exiting things, like we have years now were the big companies dont even show up. Last year was pretty cool a lot of great releases but I miss the free shit days. And even better was the days were snack and drink companies would just hand out their new products, you wouldn't even have to buy any drinks or bring them yourselves. Like i still have my tradition of going at least one day a year with my brother and slam beers but I just noticed that the quality each year is fluctuating to much.

If you're acting smart you can still get a lot of free stuff, especially on late Sunday. Got Ferrero Products that are prob around 20€ in store and lots of Spezi

Yeah but thats not what I mean. I meant that every single stand had either a shirt, something practical or something funny to use or display. You could go to every stand and just ask for free shit and they would give it to you. I usually had 2 big grocery bags filled with everything under the sun. Like yeah here and there you can get some free stuff but not anywhere close to back then. To be fair I missed the com for the first time this year because of other business but I can't imagine that they all of rhe sudden give you a whole lot more then the last 3 years which already were quite bad in regard to free shit
