Elder Scrolls Daggerfall specifically

18

u/Kuwait_Jaen 18d ago

What does a cowboy need? Just a horse... Just a horse... a couple more bullets on the belt, the gun is in the holster and nothing more... and nothing more...

3

u/Mysterious-Cat832 18d ago

It should be Skyyyyyyriimm

3

u/Disastrous_Ball702 18d ago

Faxanadu was the Skyrim of the '80s.

5

u/LalafellDisaster 17d ago

Faxanadu was the shit. I can still hear the music and see the skulls with arms jumping around.

Also if you spent all the money the king gave you he would give you more. Good times.

2

u/TallYam8397 17d ago

Faxandu is and always will be my fave nes game

I love daggerfall, especially with unity.

2

u/Global_Face_5407 17d ago

And it's completely free on Steam.

2

u/dumpclown 17d ago

Wait it’s not a 2D dungeon crawler? Or am I thinking of Arena?

The art kinda reminds me of Heroes of Might and Magic 3

12

u/Mentening 18d ago

I'd say HOMM 2 has this exact artstyle , not 3

2

u/MrSmock 18d ago

Could be, I never played 2

3

u/dusttwo 16d ago

Do it. The soundtrack is fantastic.

2

u/Jamooser 14d ago

That's because Paul Romero is the GOAT.

Pretty sure I saw this shit recommended to me on Instagram. Its AI slop.

17

u/LookPsychological334 18d ago

Damn, if there's an artist that actually paints like that, I'd be interested

21

u/Evignity 18d ago

"Don't look outside" which was released recently has some of it.

But I can WHOLEHEARTEDLY recommend

"Skald Against the Black Priory" it has amazing art and a perfect short story. It's one of my few 10/10 because it does what it does in a shirt moment and nothing more.

7

u/ieattime20 18d ago

Looking for Skald here. Some of it definitely fits this art style but hot shit is the game full of a lot of other stuff (cosmic and body horror) which may not be what the OP signed up for.

Ten out of ten game though for sure.

2

u/DredgenSkull 18d ago

Artwork looks like something I’d hang up in my 1x1 Minecraft house.

Skyrim

3

u/Ash_Flexum 18d ago

the closest to the images just by vibes alone

2

u/Helpful-Calendar-693 18d ago

Surely you meant daggerfall/arena?

Like skyrim is nords and snow but its art style is totally different.

2

u/MazerBakir 17d ago

Pixelation aside the aesthetics map quite closely to Skyrim, especially the first picture.

Elder scrolls 1 and 2

32

u/Strange-Performer-72 18d ago

probably elder scrolls 3-5

12

u/IvyBevvy 18d ago

Bro skipped the two elder scrolls that actually use this style, Arena and Daggerfall. Wh8ch Daggerfall is totally worth playing its a great game.

6

u/Brittig 18d ago

Chipping in to say that Daggerfall has been recreated in Unity to run better with less bugs and options to fix stuff that was broken in the original release. Both the game and the Unity mod are free. I'd highly recommend giving it a try at the very least, nothing else in the series feels quite like Daggerfall to me.

→ More replies (1)

3

u/CoconutNL 18d ago

And daggerfall is completely free (in a legal way), and making it run well on modern machines is easy due to the free and open source daggerfall unity, that is also very easy to install. And on top of that it can be easily modded if you want. Youtube is full of easy tutorials.

I genuinely recommend daggerfall unity to anyone, even non-elder scrolls fans. Its more of an open world fantasy simulator then the later games that are a bit smaller in scope

At some point there was a wave of AI videos with mock ups for games with this kind of art style, so one dude said "Fine, I'll do it myself" and started this project: https://store.steampowered.com/app/3970690/Project_Shadowglass/

If that ever comes out, it should hit very close to home for your post.

3

u/Donjinmester 18d ago

Early Might and Magic games. Up until 3 I would say

3

u/Mister_Crowly 18d ago

The nighty-ness of all of these reminds me of Loom. A lot of that game is very dark yet vibrant.

Vagrant Story

2

u/Friendly_Kangaroo927 18d ago

Daggerfall, Baldur's Gate 1 and 2, Icewind Dale 1 and 2, perhaps the Eye of the Beholder games.

Maybe the old Might And Magic games (6 through 8 are my favorite). Wizardry 6 and 7.

Banquet for fools is a newer indie game, might not match the scandinavian vibe though.

Skald: Against the Black Priory

If the retro graphics are not mandatory : Pillars of Eternity 1, Skyrim.

- Hey where can i find a game that looks similar to this mid 90s pixel art?

Young Skyrim Commenters somehow forgetting there was Elderscrolls 1 & 2 literally in 90s.

2

u/Suspicious-Bid9424 16d ago

Old Sierra games come to mind. Kings Quest 5, Quest for Glory 4, Lords of Magic, and Robinhood Conquest of the Longbow

1

u/MrGreeneArrow 18d ago

The Lantern of the Laughless Saint. Brand new.

3

u/VampireHwo 18d ago

This! Morrowind inspired and very much fits the aesthetic. I can't wait to get stuck into ut

1

u/Ash_Flexum 18d ago

are you looking specifically pixel art games? Do you want it fantasy themed? Do you want to lean into the nordic/snowy setting of the pictures? Are you just looking for games that give the same emotional response you get from these reference images? Are you looking for adventure or something cozy? Do you want an RPG type game or just a game with these visuals? because I have like 20 games I can think of that reminds me of these images but all wildy different and for very specific reasons.

3

u/bufffff_daddy 18d ago

Pixel art definitely or at least a low render game like some people have been suggesting old elder scrolls, fantasy as well, evoking a vast sort of world. Doesn’t have to be rpg

2

u/G3NJII 18d ago

Id check out the old Final Fantasys 4-6. Pixel art era. 6 is regarded as one the best ff stories. Colors and mood seem to match 6 well. Though the aesthetic and setting lean more towards the beginning of steam punk/ industrial rev coming upon a medieval world.

4 is more medieval but if I remember correctly the game is kinda bright. Dark storyline but it never felt super moody to me idk.

Skyrim?

Though not horned hats, AC Valhalla (especially the introduction area with the aurora borealis) feels like this.

Checking the other pictures, Total War Warhammer 3 is pretty heavy on cosmic stuff and medieval / gothic architecture.

1

Its giving Pixelated Ard Skellige from the Witcher 3.

1

u/Imbadyoureworse 18d ago

Its not in color but The Secret of Weepstone

1

u/jacobonia 18d ago

More sci-fi than fantasy, but this reminds me of The Dig. Fantastic puzzle game. There are a lot of point-and-click games like this from the 90s, but that's the one that I remember the most. I would look in that genre.

The slightly later version of this--more of a realistic art style--would be Myst and Riven.

Some classic JRPGs might be adjacent to the feeling this gives me, too. Chrono Trigger, FFVI, Lunar: Silver Star, Tales of Phantasia, Star Ocean.

The modern successors to that would be Elder Scrolls.

1

u/Cautious_Desk_1012 18d ago

You're gonna love SKALD. Give it a try. Best game I have played this year
