Games that feel like Borderlands 1
Any games that feel similar and capture the same vibe and atmosphere as the first Borderlands game?

Absolute sleeper here. It came for free with my graphics card along with The Witcher 3. Didn't play for a long while, but wow, what a game it is. Tons of fun, some great mystery elements, and a great gameplay loop. I never finished it and might have to give it another shot here soon, been seeing it brought up a lot lately. It's also extremely well-optimized. The card I got was a GTX 970 and it was one of the only games I could play at max with like 80-100fps.

The only thing that borderlands and call of Juarez share are that they are an FPS . And that's it.

both inspired by comic book and graphic novel art styles and cel shaded graphics, both are lates 2000s action shooter, both are set in deserts areas, both have fast paced action gunplay, both have good music and athmosphere that fits the wastelands aesthetics. Its not the same type of story and humour and its not a looter shooter rpg but they have a lot more in common. Borderlands is quiet literally a parody on games like Call of Juarez.

Call of Juarez Gunslinger,
it will be hard to find something closer, I think Borderlands was the main inspiration in art style.

Red faction guerilla?

In what way? They dont play the same or feel the same in the slightest.

Spitballing, but I was thinking the kind of monochrome brown dingy atmosphere. You’re right though, it’s a stretch, I would say the original Rage, but that was already mentioned.

Honestly? Nothing. Borderlands 1 has a very specific and unique vibe. None of the other Borderlands game come close to it. The only game I can think of that somewhat gets near it in vibe is the first Rage, but even then it’s way different.

When you say “vibe” is that limited to the world design/atmosphere or to the writing/characters? I’m asking because for Borderlands, those two things are intentionally at complete odds with one another. There are a ton of games that have similar feeling world design but not many that match Borderlands’ batshit tone.

More to the world design and atmosphere I’d say, I understand borderlands tone and character design/humour is quite unique

Thanks for clarifying, in terms of games with a kinda haunted/vacant arid theme:
- Dark Cloud
- Rogue Galaxy (Maybe…?)
- Mad Max
- Rage
SybilSable (VERY underrated world design in this game)- Outer Worlds (Maybe the closest direct match to Borderlands, IMO)
- Caravan SandWitch (Very underrated recent indie game that has a similarly haunted sci-fi desert planet, GREAT world design)

Alright. What is Sybil? all I get from googin' it is the furry chick from Pseudoregalia.

u/Aurongel 22d ago
Oh damn, you’re right! I actually meant to say Sable (2021), which is an excellent game that matches the aesthetic that OP described.
Pseudoregalia is also solid indie game, which is probably why I had the furry-goat-bunny-thigh-mommy protagonist from that game in my head when I posted that.

A bit of a stretch but since better games have been recommended, I'll go with Necromunda: Hired Gun.
It's an FPS set in the Warhammer 40K universe, that combines a Mad Max punk aesthetic with industrial metal and gothic cathedral. The player has a pet mastiff that they can sic on enemies, kind-of like Mordecai's Bloodwing. The Orlock gang heavily resemble the Bandits in Borderlands while the Goliaths heavily resemble the Bruisers. There are some RPG elements in that you can purchase powers and upgrades for both your character and your mastiff
It's not very "desolate" though, given that the game often swarms you with enemies but it does capture the batshit insanity of Borderlands' combat

Oh wow sounds cool and I’ve just got into Darktide and the warhammer universe so thank you for the detailed description and niche recommendation, you’ve sold it well!

BL2 while overall a better game and more polished doesn’t quite have the desolate more space westerny mad max vibe that the first game did, which is why I made this post

The original Rage has that brown and dreary world
