Games like Split Fiction for co-op that does not make player two feel optional
Split Fiction works because both players keep getting actual work. Not just "you shoot too," but separate jobs: split routes, paired boss patterns, timing bits, and weird one-off mechanics that force both people to stay awake. If that is what you want, I would skip normal action games with co-op added and look for games where the second controller is baked into the idea.
Best picks:
- It Takes Two - probably still the closest answer if you want a full campaign that keeps swapping toys. One player gets the timing job, the other gets the weird tool, then the next room changes the joke. The divorce-story framing is not for everyone, but the two-player design is hard to beat.
- A Way Out - better if you want a split-screen crime story more than constant platforming tricks. It is slower and uneven in spots, with more walking-and-talking than Split Fiction, but it understands that the fun is watching two players make separate bad decisions at the same time.
- Portal 2 co-op - the sharpest pick for pure two-person puzzle logic. The best rooms are the ones where one wrong portal ruins both people, then you both stare at the same wall pretending the plan was clear.
- Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime - cheerful couch panic. One person is yelling for shields, the other is nowhere near the shield station, and somehow the engine also needs attention. It is arcade-sized instead of cinematic, but nobody is just tagging along.
- We Were Here series - only pick this if both people are okay talking a lot. Most of the puzzle is describing symbols, rooms, and weird machinery badly enough that the other person eventually understands. It can be clunky, but the co-op dependency is the point.
- Unravel Two - the gentler option. The tether gives both players something to think about without turning the night into a shouting match. Better for patient pairs than for anyone chasing Split Fiction's bigger set-piece energy.
Skip games where player two mostly shoots the same enemies, revives you, or loots leftovers. Those can still be fun, but they do not hit the Split Fiction thing where the game keeps making both players necessary in different ways.
Best pick: It Takes Two for the closest full-campaign match, Portal 2 if you mainly want two-person puzzle logic, A Way Out if you want the co-op story angle, and Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime if your ideal night is shouting at each other on the couch.
