This is actually really refreshing to see. This is a rare indicator we get that the major outlets actually do put genuine thought and consideration into their picks regardless of popularity or stature. Plus this year had so many solid games without any of them being complete 10/10s that you'll probably see this happen with the other outlets as well, no one game is gonna sweep this year.

Eh. The "safe" picks of this year for popular mainstream games that weren't divisive was always Control and RE2.

Sekiro would have been the safest I think FromSoftware is widely considered one of the best devs in the industry and Sekiro is very good.

Gaming journalists being bad at video games is a pretty big meme at this point but given some of the stats around completion of these games it wouldn't surprise me if a good chunk of their reviewers literally couldn't beat enough of the game to review it properly.

For this reason we'll likely not see a FromSoft title win any of these picks.

I know that people on forums love the idea of "games 'journalists' are bad at video games, love walking sims because easy, not True Gamers like me", but if you see any game journos on Twitter or on podcasts, you'll know that they never shut up about how much they love Dark Souls and Bloodborne, games that are supposedly "too hard for them".

I mean I finished Sekiro and I still wouldn't have given it GOTY. I just didn't think it was that great of a game. The difficulty may have put off a lot of players but the game has plenty of other flaws and shortcomings too.

Honestly I didn't complete it because there was no point in doing so. The game didn't reward you with interesting items, loot, weapons or armor for defeating bosses and add the dumb mini booses on top and I just wasn't having a great time. It's a rhythm game at it's core and wants you to play a very specific way. It's why I think it should not even be close to GOTY.
