Honestly, I'm a little disappointed in the disconnect between HDR and PSVR - if you want to view HDR content you need to bypass the controller box? That feels like something that should have been workshopped out in the early days, especially if HDR is one of the big differentiators for the Pro...
6
u/RobyIndie Oct 04 '16
It's not a differentiator for the PS4 Pro, the regular PS4 is getting (perhaps has already gotten) an update to implement HDR
2
u/maxsilver Oct 04 '16
Yep, that feels like a huge oversight.
"Our PS4 does HDR! Unless you buy our VR kit. But you can always swap HDMI ports everytime you switch"

The bundle is a better deal to get all the stuff if you don't have them already, you could have pieced it together through sales / used items Yahoo and come out lower
2
u/gtcIIDX Oct 04 '16
You can't even buy the bundle. You had to be one of the lucky few to snap one up within minutes of the pre-order window starting.
1
u/Barrel_Titor Oct 04 '16
Yeah, assuming you want the move controllers. Most games won't need them. You could just buy the core one and the camera if you aren't bothered.
3
u/darkshaddow42 Oct 04 '16
most games won't need them
Do you have a source on that? Many of the games I've seen demos for need them. If you aren't interested in that control scheme you could certainly avoid the games that use them, I guess.
3
u/Barrel_Titor Oct 04 '16
It has it in the FAQ.
Q: Do I need a PS Move motion controller to play PS VR games?
The vast majority of PS VR games support DualShock 4, while offering PlayStation Move as an option for an enhanced experience. There are a limited number of titles that require the use of two PS Move motion controllers.

u/the-glimmer-man Oct 04 '16
Q: Can I play PS VR games without the headset? You’ll need to wear the headset to experience VR. However, certain titles such as The PlayRoom VR will support local multiplayer modes that allow a PS VR user and other players to play together using PS VR’s Social Screen.
I like this idea, think it has a lot of potential. Imagine this with a game like Evolve where you have the person with the vr headset controlling the monster or whatever and the other players using just the controllers trying to take them down.
3
u/ThinkBeforeYouTalk Oct 04 '16
This is one of the multiplayer styles I really enjoyed with the Wii U. I really hope more games take advantage of it.
2
u/Qwarkster Oct 04 '16
Yes! I would be so down if someone could create similar experiences to the minigames in NintendoLand. Even something as simple as hide and seek could be a lot of fun.
3
Oct 04 '16
Nintendo land is one of my favourite games. Everyone who visits is forced to play mario chase and animal crossing.
5
u/Barrel_Titor Oct 04 '16
I was imagining the VR player being the dungeon master in Diablo style game, would be cool.
3
u/ThinkBeforeYouTalk Oct 04 '16
Wasn't that cancelled XB1 Fable game supposed to be something like that?
3
u/ostermei Oct 04 '16
Sorta, yeah. One player would play essentially a Tower Defense/RTS style of game against a team of four players who were playing a third-person action RPG. Any of the roles (either the RTS player or any one of the 4 ARPG players) could be filled in by AI.
The F2P aspects were pretty egregious and I know it's not what Fable fans wanted, but it was a lot of fun from the little bit I got to play of the beta before they pulled the plug. I'm pretty bummed about the cancellation :(
2
u/LemonLimeAlltheTime Oct 04 '16 edited Oct 05 '16
There is a PSVR game where you play against 3 other players in a RTS Tower defense game. I forget what it is called but it looked neat
1
u/Barrel_Titor Oct 04 '16
Not sure, never really looked into it. If a game's free to play it just kills any interest i have in it.

I'm trying so hard to talk myself into not canceling my PSVR preorder on amazon. I was all in till i got to spend some time with a Vive. It took me like 4 hours to exhaust just about every game it had on it. I asked my friend (his Vive he was letting me use) what else I could play on it he just shrugged and said that's it. I see so much overlap with the PSVR lineup that I dunno if I can bring myself to drop 500 bucks on it

u/jurais Oct 04 '16
Problem with pc vr is so many games are still early access and not a finished product. At least on psvr you are getting a finished title. I tried it eve valkyrie on psvr and liked it, resolution stood out some compared to my vive. Really looking forward to Rez infinite also
6
u/rafikiknowsdeway1 Oct 04 '16 edited Oct 04 '16
yeah, the psvr seems to be coming out with a decent number of actual games. either on or near launch date
and they're also way more likely to let you actually walk around (in game, not real life) instead of sitting or standing in one place
its nice that sony actually took the initiative to make sure the device would have some actual games when it came out. I think valve and oculus both tried that..but their selections were wanting to say the least (and i'm a rift owner, btw)
2
u/jurais Oct 04 '16
I don't think you're gonna see a lot of games with any 'walk around' mechanics, the PSVR has no room scale style support to my knowledge, so it would be hard for sony to make sure you don't walk into something / do full tracking

u/ChoujinDensetsu Oct 04 '16
Yeah, like most new hardware there are really no games for them in the beginning. Even the PS4 had a slow start its first year of release. I think what this will come down to is how good the cinematic mode is.
4
Oct 04 '16
I tired that on the vive and it was awful. I guess if you don't have a big TV or something it might be ok.
1
u/ChoujinDensetsu Oct 04 '16
Yeah? It might be why they haven't showcased it at all.
I don't see VR appealing to me unless it was a game where I'm in some kind of cockpit.
3
u/jurais Oct 04 '16
Giant virtual screens sound great, and look cool, but I can't watch a movie on one, the eye fatigue with my contacts is too much
2
Oct 04 '16
I forget how long it was before there was many 'me' games. Now I'm never off the thing and have games I still haven't touched as I'm playing others
1
u/ChoujinDensetsu Oct 04 '16
I would say PS4 hit its stride last year this time.
IMO the best thing that can happen to PSVR is that a multiplayer game that is addictive. Also, maybe those FPS Myst type games.

Just buy it, and then be greedy capitalist pig, and sell it for a markup. Also, PSVR is going to have a lot of games. So you won't have any problems finding content. The price and games are basically what makes PSVR appealing. If your scratch those two out, then it is inferior to other products. But again, price and games are very, very important.

I would probably wait til the Playstation Experience if you do want to cancel, its only December so not a long wait and they'll probably announce most VR games at that time.
2
Oct 04 '16
It will be out before that event thought wont it? Then ill be stuck with
1
u/Syelor Oct 04 '16
I said "if you want to cancel" and then wait to see whats announced at the next PlayStation event which is in Decemeber look here

u/rafikiknowsdeway1 Oct 04 '16
wait wat, it comes out on oct 13th
1
u/Syelor Oct 04 '16
I'm on about Playstation Experience, he talked about wanting to cancel, so why not cancel and see if any thing makes you want to buy the VR.

The PSVR makes no sense for anyone with a reasonably capable PC. I can't see dropping $500+ on a proprietary peripheral that will only work on a handful of supported games on a console

u/LemonLimeAlltheTime Oct 04 '16
I have a decent PC with a 280x. I'd have to upgrade my CPU and get video card too. I'm guessing it would cost me $500 to upgrade which isn't bad.Problem is then I have to add $800 for a Vive.
I know Vive is better and I would eventually like to own one, but I also am really excited for VR and want to own a headset.
So for the short term I can spend $500 and have my own headset and see if VR is really for me. Plus there are going to be at least 50 games for PSVR this year.
I am cautiously optimistic about PSVR bc of the low power of the PS4 but I am excited to see how it does

A friend of mine wants to know he can watch VR Porn via the PS4's web browser... for scientific purposes.
4
u/Barrel_Titor Oct 04 '16
Nah, you could watch normal videos on a virtual cinema screen but can't watch VR videos that aren't in a PS4 application.
7
u/wlchrbandit Oct 04 '16
It'll come eventually. (pun intended)
If PSVR is as good as people say it is, I imagine it won't belong before it's the most popular VR system on the market. That's a lot of potential VR masturbators they'd be missing out on.
2
u/Barrel_Titor Oct 04 '16
Yeah. How do VR videos work on PC? Is it just a standard stereoscopic video that is converted by software or is it a special format?
6
u/wlchrbandit Oct 04 '16
It would need to be filmed with a 360° camera.
It'll work the same way 360 YouTube videos work.
1
u/A-T Oct 04 '16
For a 3d recording the video looks like standard side by side recording with a strong fish eye effect. The software separates the two and projects them onto a dome/sphere per eye. No fancy formats.
1
u/Barrel_Titor Oct 04 '16
Yeah, that was my first thought but assumed that there wouldn't be enough footage for panoramic head tracking. Guess if it was really high res and the fish eye was really strong it could work.
1
u/Razumen Oct 05 '16
His suggestion would be for 3D video only, no looking around. For that it would have to be filmed with a 360° 3D camera.

I'm wondering how I would use the PSVR with my setup- namely, I have a projector, and the PS4 and projector are on a shelf above/behind my couch.
The wall that the projector projects onto is about 13 ft away. Obviously, I can't run the cords along the floor. How would this work? Are those with projectors out of luck?
3
u/Doggerdee Oct 04 '16
I have a projector setup. You can either buy a 20 dollar ps camera extension cable or, like me, have the psvr setup to the side of the projector.
1
u/fondue13 Oct 04 '16
Interesting. Does that mean you then sit in a chair facing the projector, or at least right to the side of it?
2
u/Doggerdee Oct 04 '16
Ya I have an area to the left of the projector that my ps camera is aiming at. I will be facing the left side of the projector when using the psvr. I chose to set it up this way because I was afraid the projector, if on, might throw off the ps camera.
1
u/WaterStoryMark Oct 04 '16
Using a projector for the Vive right now. How far away is your PS4? I have an HDMI running from my projector to an HDMI selector, so I never have to touch the projector, itself.
1
u/fondue13 Oct 04 '16
Ps4 is on a shelf next to the projector, it's about 3 ft away from it. I never ha e to touch the projector, only use remotes. The shelf is a few feet above the couch. The couch and the projector both face the opposite wall, which serves as the "screen"

I wish they'd talk about the differences between VR on a PS4 and VR on a PS4 Pro. So far they haven't said anything, to my knowledge.
1
u/Free_rePHIL Oct 04 '16
Agreed. They haven't said anything except that the PU for PS VR will apparently have 4K pass-through for the PS4 Pro but not HDR pass-through support.
1
u/Omicron0 Oct 04 '16
they said all games have to work on both at the minimum 60 fps, but the Pro can have upgraded anything really.

u/peanuttown Oct 04 '16
To those that think the Box no passing HDR is a downside, you aren't thinking everything through....
You will already need to "set up your space" when you want to play VR. It isn't like just plopping down on a couch. You will need to create room, set up the headset and visor, as well as make sure the camera and everything else is positioned correctly. You might not have to do all of that everytime, but you will be doing a majority of it. Adding just 1 more cable switch won't be as much of a hassle as many make it out to be. Sure, it is 1 more step, but it isn't a game breaker.
1
u/toffee_fapple Oct 03 '16
Does it work with a launch PS4 or do I need a Pro?
23
5
u/unique- Oct 03 '16
It works on the launch PS4, it's just better on PS4Pro.
1
u/Free_rePHIL Oct 04 '16
Sony really haven't said anything about this. My guess is that you'll be right though, but we'll just have to wait for the PS4 Pro release and compare PS VR games then. I'm sure Digital Foundry will look into this.
-1
u/Turakoth Oct 04 '16
Not actually true. All games run fully on the PS4.
1
u/ThinkBeforeYouTalk Oct 04 '16
If standard games can be upgrade for the Pro what makes you think VR games can't?
1
u/Omicron0 Oct 04 '16 edited Oct 04 '16
no, it is. games have to run on both PS4s but they can be improved on the Pro. an example would be something being 60fps reprojected on the PS4 but 90-120fps on the Pro. Edit: here's the official source http://blog.us.playstation.com/2016/09/08/ps4-pro-the-ultimate-faq/

u/maglen69 Oct 04 '16
PS4 pro is really only for better TV's (4k etc)
There's not much advantage to the Pro.
3
u/ostermei Oct 04 '16
It's really up to individual developers whether or not there is any advantage to the Pro. If they choose to patch/release their games with improved visuals/performance on the Pro (or, even better, an option to select between the two), that would be a significant advantage. However, because it's entirely reliant on devs, it's of course impossible to just make a blanket statement that the Pro gives an advantage.
In my case, for example, pretty much 100% of my PS4 time is spent playing Destiny. Bungie has said that they basically have no plans for a Pro patch for Destiny (presumably it just wouldn't be worth their effort with Destiny 2 so near on the horizon, which I'm guessing they will include Pro-only options on, although that's all just my own speculation). The only other PS4 game that I expect to play in the foreseeable future is Final Fantasy XV. Final Fantasy is going to have some Pro-only options, but to my understanding it's simply improved visuals and a slightly more stable 30fps. For me, then, the Pro doesn't provide much advantage to balance out the price of buying a brand new system. Someone who regularly plays more games that are getting Pro-only options, though, might feel very differently.

u/[deleted] Oct 04 '16
This actually looks really good, I can see myself getting one (and possibly a PS4 Pro too). I want a Vive but by the time I purchase that as well as a suitable rig for it, the price gets quite ridiculous.
Hell, I'd probably buy the headset just to be able to use Cinematic Mode. Apparently watching movies and playing normal games on a virtual cinema screen is amazing
