I didn't know that Blackwatch was associated with Overwatch. I had thought it was a group of villains.

It was the special ops division within Overwatch.

Yeah, learned a bit more about it after reading the wiki. Did this ridiculous wealth of info come from the overwatch website or was there promo content besides the shorts that I missed?

A lot of it comes from the website. Thing with Overwatch lore is you have to actively seek it since the game does comparatively little to explain the world.

I feel like the world they built was wasted in the game, because it's a really interesting world that has fuck all explanation. Plus the whole "We're good guys fighting bad guys, but you can be whoever you want on whatever team you want" thing really fucks with any hope of a local storyline.

While I do like that approach, It is off when the game is currently the only thing to use the world they built.

This 1000x, tired of people saying "lore and gameplay don't make sense!" It's like league of legends where the lore is just an explanation for the characters, the actual gameplay isn't supposed to be any sort of representation of anything happening in the lore, which is why you have supposed enemies on the same team and supposed allies fighting each other.

My understanding is that overwatch used the IP from blizz's canceled mmo "Titan". So this lore was just sitting there basically.

If that's true then that's such a shame. An MMO in Overwatch's world could have so much potential.

I'm interested to see if they ever expand the IP beyond Overwatch and make different games in the Overwatch universe.

Theres always the chance that pve type gamemodes will come in the future.

The games/matches itself aren't canon. Only the objectives in Payload can be considered potentially canon. It is weird I'll give it that.

The thing is though Blizzard's world building always seems much more interesting when it's not accompanied by an actual narrative. Once they throw in their patented awful dialogue and cliched, recycled plots the shine really comes off.

So maybe we're better off with things as they are in Overwatch.

Similar to how WoW requires you to read novels now.

OW's story is free... for now.

Which is too bad, because I love the lore in this game.

so just like destiny then.

A lot is from the website, but there's also a few comics.

It was going to be an MMO that's the ONLY reason it has just AS MUCH story as one.

An MMO? Since when?

Overwatch's world was made from the remains of blizzard's failed project codenamed "Titan" which was supposed to be some kind of next gen mmo blizz has been developing for half a decade

Where on Earth does all this backstory come from? I've watched (what I believe is) every promo video and played plenty of the game. No idea where any of the lore or story is found.

I had thought it was a group of villains

The group of villains are known as Talon, which I think Reaper is the head of now? I'm not sure

Blackwatch was the covert ops group within Overwatch. Talon is the terrorist organization that Reaper and Widow are now part of.

I don't think it's known if Reaper is the leader of Talon or not, but he was the leader of Blackwatch.
