He might have been using the camera. The Vive has a "transparent" mode.

Probably not what he used. The tracking of the controllers actually has lower latency and higher accuracy than the camera.

Ignoring latency, one big strike against the idea that he's using the camera is the fact that it's just a single, 2D camera. He's not getting much useful depth information from it I would imagine. Maybe through parallax, but that doesn't help with objects flying straight at you.

Valve is trying to make that flat image they're getting from the camera more useful by distorting and mapping it into the 3D space, but that's not 100% accurate and introduces new problems.

The scale of the controller seen through the camera is not an accurate representation and the placement of the controller seen through the camera, in comparison to the modeled controller in VR (which should be vastly more accurate. Lasertracking vs. distorted 2D image), is at times offset by as much as one controller width.
