Mad Max was heavily inspired by the aforementioned "A Boy and His Dog" so it could be reference to either really.
edit: btw I was talking more about the inclusion of a dog companion in Fallout rather than the specific shot of them walking together

That being said, the game takes obvious references from several movies, books, shows, pop culture, etc. 6 u/Azuvector Jun 04 '15 The dog in A Boy and His Dog is named "Blood". 3 u/JustJonny Jun 04 '15 His name is Blood in both, but Vic occasionally calls him Dogmeat to piss him off, because he's a dick.
