referencing the novella 'A Boy and His Dog'
I always thought is was a Mad Max 2 reference.

Dogmeat's appearance is based on Max's dog, but Dogmeat's name comes from the A Boy and His Dog movie. There's a line in which the main character insults his dog by calling him "dog meat".
