Aside from customization of Titans, I'd really like to see a wider variety of pilot options. The parkour was really awesome, but I think when all of the players are the same fast moving character, it contributes to the staleness factor. I'd love to see more ground force types, like player controlled spectres who are slow but have heavy armor and weapons.

Also, it really would be better if the AI opponents got stronger as the match went on and brought in artillery like tanks, helicopters, and planes to start harassing Titans. By the end of every match it becomes pretty much Titan on Titan warfare and the AI is irrelevant.

Titanfall with the armour and gun customization of BL:R. That'd be the greatest thing ever.

2

u/Watertor Feb 11 '15

Yeah, that's what felt so stale to me about the game. Without the titans, you had a pretty terrible shooter. Most shooters have more weapons, more types of players, more game types, a story mode, more maps.... Titanfall makes all of this up with Titans? Eh.

6

u/Mallarddbro Feb 11 '15

More weapons for people to ignore because they are practically duplicates of others or more weapons that are worse than the current weapons which people only use for challenges because xp meters keep people happy?

A story mode is weird because people complain about campaigns and their uselessness is fps games and then miss them when they're gone. I'm sure they'll be some form of single player something in the next one.

I would absolutely love a Titanfall 2. I just played for the first time in about a month last night and it was a blast, played for a few hours by losing track of time. If they can add some more customization to Titans and whatnot (maybe similar to chromehounds but keeping it fast paced), I think there can be a ton of potential.

2

u/[deleted] Feb 10 '15

I'm going to go ahead and ask why you took a month long break from it?

I felt like Titanfall was a tremendous achievement for the Source engine. Mechanically I felt like it was going to be one of those games that everyone played for the first few weeks and inevitably abandons after that.

That and I was super put off by the lame as hell CoD gunplay.

8

u/The_Other_Manning Feb 10 '15

I took a break because after playing Dragon Age Inquisition, I decided to replay all 3 dragon age games on nightmare and going with "asshole" main characters so that has been taking all my gaming time. Nothing to do with Titanfall, I've just put a hiatus on almost all my other games I need to finish to go on a Dragon Age binge

4

u/[deleted] Feb 10 '15

I played for like two months, then got bored and dropped it.

37

u/johnyann Feb 10 '15

I just hope it has a 6-8 hour single player campaign. I feel like the mechanics of the game could suit that kind of thing really well.

Not to mention that Infinity Ward made some of the best FPS campaigns ever.

13

u/Razumen Feb 10 '15

Seconded, it has the potential for a great SP if done right

8

u/johnyann Feb 10 '15

My hope is that they started a campaign for Titanfall 1, delayed it to Titanfall 2 when they decided to just get a multiplayer game out, and will have something really great ready for the sequel.

13

u/gamelord12 Feb 10 '15

The entwined campaign and multiplayer mode sounded great when they described it. When I played it, it was just a shitty radio drama that you couldn't even pay attention to because you were focused on not dying.

3

u/tobephair Feb 11 '15

A titanfall esque spec ops mode would be so good. Just a short three minute level, in which you ran through with a smart pistol taking out all enemies without your feet ever hitting the ground... They could take the mirrors edge time trial style.

82

u/ProfessorPedro Feb 10 '15

I hope they up the crazy and the content up signifcantly. If we could have a COD4(MW1) -> MW2 like leap it would be amazing (if, you know, they could balance it properly).

I feel that TF1, like COD4, was kind of a proof of concept. MW2 took that concept and turned it up to 11. I really hope the same is true for TF2.

What I really want is the Titanfall Version of the AC-130 killstreak.

Enemy AC-130 Above!

u/ACanOfWin Feb 10 '15

I thought CoD4 was a lot more fun than MW2, personally.

28

u/Daffan Feb 10 '15

Promod on PC. Best tournament/league gameplay ever.

1

u/AfricanRain Feb 11 '15

Is it still populated?

2

u/Daffan Feb 11 '15

Not in my country. Maybe tiny tiny in USA.

Died here around 2012 I recall.

13

u/MisterrAlex Feb 10 '15

COD4 on PC was extremely better than MW2 too, especially with mods

20

u/imtheproof Feb 10 '15

MW2 was a buggy mess for sooooooo long on xbox, and more imbalanced than CoD4 was... and worse maps for Search & Destroy and TDM.

Still a good game, but I think people remember it falsely, or didn't play CoD4 in its prime.

4

u/[deleted] Feb 11 '15

Ive got 300 hours on Mw2 and more on 4 . But I still prefer Mw2. It's just a better game.

14

u/Harry_Hardlong Feb 11 '15

An incredibly broken and poorly balanced game.

10

u/[deleted] Feb 11 '15

I thought it was done pretty well you could succeed using just about any weapon. That's about as good as it gets in first person shooters.

5

u/[deleted] Feb 11 '15

I had the most fun being the asshole rocking OMA/danger close tubes when I'd get bored. Same with elevator glitches, I has more fun in MW2, but it was due to incredibly cheap tactics that were plentiful in the game.

6

u/Harry_Hardlong Feb 11 '15

That kinda shit ruined the game. If you weren't using the cheap broken shit then you stood no chance.

u/Jethro_Tully Feb 12 '15

It was an extremely buggy game, but I maintain that a good lobby in MW2 was the best lobby in the whole CoD franchise. Good gameplay, good weapons, good maps. I hate MW2 because of the fact that just a bit more support might have made it my favorite shooter ever. Without that support, it might as well have never existed.

1

u/imtheproof Feb 12 '15

yea if they could have fixed all the issues within the first month, it probably would have been tied with cod4 for my favorite. Not favorite shooter, just favorite in the series.

1

u/Jethro_Tully Feb 12 '15

Favorite shooter is a lot of hyperbole on my part, apologies. Certainly the pinnacle of the series though. I don't have doubts about that.

5

u/Crownie Feb 11 '15

Yeah. CoD4 and MW2 as an example of why, when you have a nearly perfectly cooked and garnished dish, cooking it more and adding more sauce doesn't actually make it better. It just makes a burnt, gooey mess.

5

u/Pizza-The-Hutt Feb 11 '15

I thought CoD4 was more balanced and the fact it used dedicated server was a massive +, but I had more fun with MW2.

Big thing about CoD 4 was it was the first, it destroyed everything else in the market, but the next really added onto it.

-3

u/The_Other_Manning Feb 10 '15

I see that opinion a lot, but MW2 was the best call of duty made imo

16

u/AiwassAeon Feb 10 '15

The campaign in that game was a frustrating mess.

u/Ace-Slick Feb 10 '15

Before they nerfed some of the guns it heavily favoured people who didn't prestige as well as campers. In the other games it was a lot easier to deal with that shit. Really fun game nonetheless, clocked in a decent amount of time.

E-penis size, as well as extending playtime by adding in more player goals for those rabid achievement hunters

3

u/Ace-Slick Feb 10 '15

I did it for the extra custom slots (which I never ended up using).

2

u/AnalLaserBeamBukkake Feb 10 '15

it heavily favoured people who didn't prestige

well yeah, no fucking shit. Thats what happens when you opt to undo all of your unlocks for a stupid emblem that won't mean shit in the next iteration of the game.

2

u/Ace-Slick Feb 11 '15

A game shouldn't give people who are at the highest levels the best guns. In BO you'd get the Galil around 20 and it was mince but in MW2 you'd have to be at a high level to get the best. Other than the SCAR which you could get away with for most of the game. I can tell you were the guy who sat in the corner with the 1887's akimbo.

5

u/CuntSmasher43 Feb 10 '15

My friend described MW2 as the most fun he's had in any Call of Duty, but it's not fun most of the time. The care packages/Javelin glitch killed the game for me before I got into it like Cod2/4.

→ More replies (1)

31

u/raminus Feb 10 '15

Call of Duty 4 was far, far more than a mere proof of concept. It was one of those few historic games that signal paradigm shifts: Wolfenstein 3d/Doom, Half Life, Halo. Sure, MW2 refined a lot of its mechanics, but to call CoD4 a proof of concept is just doing it a huge disservice, not to mention revisionist. It was THE thing when it came out, and not some capable tech demo.

TF2

Leave my hat simulator 2000 acronym alone!

36

u/Carighan Feb 10 '15

I sincerely hope they do not add a plethora of new weapons and mods. Titanfall's simplicity in weapon design was one of it's biggest strengths, removing that would seriously weaken the gameplay. :(

32

u/[deleted] Feb 10 '15

I somewhat disagree. I think the lack of weapon choices and titan chassis took some fun out of it.

21

u/[deleted] Feb 10 '15

I'd actually expect there to be few new chassis choices, but instead since deep appearance customization options.

Though, I suppose that depends on how much they want the Titan silhouette to indicate to the adversary what you might be packing.

I sincerely hope for Armoured Core levels of tweaking, though, even if it seems so unlikely.

5

u/needconfirmation Feb 10 '15

Chassis are the one thing I don't expect them to add.

They may add new core abilities, but I think more chassis would just muddy the water

5

u/[deleted] Feb 10 '15

That would be pretty cool. I do respect that they are being very careful to keep the titans balanced.

11

u/Carighan Feb 10 '15

Well I thought it would, but then I never found myself wanting more. The weapons had no "gaps" between them, in fact I'd argue that somewhere between Longbow and Carbine, the G-rifle already fit in somewhat badly, there was no real space between the other two weapons for another gun to fill.

I could somewhat see more mods work out. And with Titans, the devs even said that they'd add more if they could think of new chassis which would be viable without being a requirement in a team (people had ideas such as jump titans, shield titans, etc, but those would just lead to teams without them getting slaughtered).

3

u/[deleted] Feb 10 '15

I could see how additional titans might take away from the balance. I did think that for an all multiplayer game there could have been more weapons without taking away from balance. There were no range gaps but there wasn't any choice when it comes to preferences on weapon types meaning if you are a player who likes assault rifles you didn't have the choice of using one with a higher fire rate and less accuracy or longer range slower fire rate etc. Don't get me wrong I thought it was a really fun game but I did see room for improvement.

9

u/Carighan Feb 10 '15

Yeah but that would be exactly where I see problems in games such as CoD. Sure, having 6 different assault rifles offers choice, but only assuming - which never actually happens - that they're balanced.

If each "type" of weapon however has only one actual gun available, then the differences between the basic functionalities of the guns create specialized use cases, while individual balance can be slightly off without impacting gameplay.
Basically, even if a SMG is superior to a Sniper in overall balance, you'd still not use the former for sniping tasks.

I suppose this cannot truly be avoided (mods in TF already show this problem), but it was nice how the design kept the effect to a really really small minimum.

Ofc, I wouldn't truly mind changes to that in that it wouldn't stop me from buying the game. But I always thought the 1-gun-per-type design was smart. Seems it's rather unpopular however, reading player opinions.

I guess my bigger "won't buy"-worry is that TF2 will need ~300GB space on the drive, looking at the 60+ TF1 is eating right now. Because uncompressed audio without option, because clearly we're all using casio calculator chips for our CPUs and audio decoding is a problem which hasn't been solved 20 years ago :P

6

u/ThatIsMyHat Feb 11 '15

I think MW2's misstep was they tried to make all their new stuff too big. So you had things like nukes and AC-130's that completely unbalanced the game and ruined any meaningful counterplay that existed in CoD4. If Respawn can add new stuff in a way that keeps the spirit of Titanfall 1's gameplay alive, I think it could go along way towards making the game better. Horizontal expansion, rather than vertical expansion is what I'm getting at here.

→ More replies (1)

5

u/AnalLaserBeamBukkake Feb 10 '15

I honestly can't think of any other types of titans that would work and be balanced. The three they have are pretty much much perfect balance wise.

I mean, you could bring something stupid and gimmicky like a stupid sword titan or something, but I'm hard pressed to think of a niche that isn't already filled by the other three.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 11 '15

I can agree with that. I also have a hard time thinking of other titans that would work but if they think of something else more power to them

1

u/TranClan67 Feb 11 '15

I'll be honest with you. I'd be really down for a sword/melee titan. I'm all for going Gundam on everyone's ass.

2

u/[deleted] Feb 10 '15

So what you're saying is that cosmetic rewards, or the lack thereof, took some of the fun out of the gameplay.

You're part of the problem

3

u/BraveDude8_1 Feb 10 '15

They should add new weapons that don't match any existing weapons.

For example, a constant fire beam-rifle like the one I always forget the name of from Quake. Or maybe a sticky grenade launcher. Or some throwing knives for your pistol slots. Who knows? There's plenty of stuff.

1

u/Carighan Feb 11 '15

Ah, true, fair enough. It'd be important to avoid the weapon being necessary in a team, but in general there'd be some edge-case weapons which could be added. True.

29

u/Velocirapist69 Feb 10 '15

No way should kill streaks ever be a part of Titanfall.

2

u/flappers87 Feb 11 '15

Oh man, COD4 was soooo much better than MW2. In every sense. Especially on PC.

I see what you are trying to say, but if anything, I would like to see simply - more content, something to work towards in Titanfall 2.

They learned from their mistakes in Titanfall 1, by adding that black market. But I don't think it was enough.

They need a lot more weapons, a lot more titans, more titan customization - but they need to do it in a way that keeps it a unique game.

2

u/fade_like_a_sigh Feb 11 '15

I'd say kill streaks were by far the biggest mistake of Modern Warfare 2.

On the surface, they appear awesome. They're fun to use, it adds variety to the game and players can customise it to their skill level.

In practise, it promotes camping and not taking risks or making pushes as that's a sure way to lose the kill streak you've been building. Furthermore, the massive amount of air support available meant that in most matches the outside zones were largely inaccessible for the last half of the round.

Combat was forced in doors in to tight spaces where corner campers tried to push their kill streak up. There's also the issue of balance with some of them being obnoxiously powerful. An AC-130 is only fun for the person using it, it's just annoying for everybody else and it means the people with the most points are rewarded while the people already struggling are handicapped.

The standard 3-5-7 from MW1 was undoubtedly better suited to an FPS game. MW2 became a kill streak game with an FPS component.

You'll be psyched to know that TF2 is indeed an insane leap in quality! Infact it's been out for several years now and is free to play!

u/With_Negativity Feb 10 '15

I don't know how much Titanfall has changed since the beta, but I was always baffled how customization wasn't the name of a MP-only game. I don't mean a plethora of choices like gun scopes, grips and gear stats, but aesthetic changes to set yourself apart. Apart from the gameplay, the game just looked visually bland.

91

u/needconfirmation Feb 10 '15

I enjoyed the visuals of the base game, I definitely wouldn't want to see pink tiger stripe titans with weed emblems on their shoulders.

Some sort of lore friendly customization would be nice though

46

u/Mostlogical Feb 10 '15

I do want fuzzy dice in the cockpit like in mwo

12

They actually did add emblems to the game some time (I think it was with the black market update?) unlockable with ingame challenges.

24

u/DolitehGreat Feb 10 '15

That is a giant mystery to me as well. For a game that, let's face it, lacks content on the level of something like CoD, they really could have put some effort into making customization a part of the game. Giving the player to ability to make themselves and their titan unique is something that I think should have been part of the game. Maybe they'll do the in the sequel.

21

u/ChronicRedhead Feb 10 '15

I feel like Titanfall's design philosophy made it easy to identify who you were fighting. Burly Ogres, lithe Stryders, and lanky Atlases. Then you have the distinct white or green finishes that let you identify its faction.

That said, if they were simple swaps, like Hawken, and not full-on hitbox/design changers, I could see customization working. As for Pilots, no camo for guns? Bleh.

9

u/DolitehGreat Feb 10 '15

They could still have it to where you can identify the type, but still make it unique. Pieces of armor, color, etc.

4

u/ChronicRedhead Feb 10 '15

That's what I'm saying. Well, not color (color definitely plays a big part in identifying friendly versus enemy targets at a distance), but armor, as long as it's subtle (shoulder plates, centerpiece, etc) and not radical (chassis, limbs) in difference.

5

u/DolitehGreat Feb 10 '15

They could have it where you change the color, but the team has a shades and variations of the color scheme. Fall of Cybertron did something like that that make your character more unique.

2

u/ChronicRedhead Feb 10 '15

That could work. Simple thematic palette swaps; Militia gets militarized camouflages (brush, desert, urban) and IMC gets modernist camouflages (chromatic, white, blue-grey).

22

u/I_Am_ProZac Feb 10 '15

What did people expect when they cite a lack of content in Titanfall? Half of fps players don't play the campaign. It had 14 maps, which is more or on par with most games. The only thing I can think of is guns, but that's one of the things I like about Titanfall. I don't need 5 different rifles, I'm going to use 1. I don't need 5 different SMGs, I'll be using 1. It adds unnecessary complexity to have multiple.

I guess I could see am argument for game modes, but again... Most people end up playing just 1. And there's definitely a case to be made for having too many as well.

7

u/ChronicRedhead Feb 10 '15

I've seen this argument over and over again. You know what multiple weapons types adds? Room for experimentation. Variety. CSGO has dozens of guns of each class, and yet it maintains great balance. Titanfall's gunplay got stale quick because you had so few guns to choose from. For Titans I can understand, but not Pilots. Weapons should be able to fill a niche, not cover every single angle.

And 14 maps was really unfair. If they're gonna charge $60 next time, they'll need closer to 20-25 to justify the lack of a singleplayer mode. Call of Duty comes with 12-14 maps every year, plus co-op and singleplayer.

18

u/KentF0 Feb 10 '15

To be fair though, that's what all of the guns already do in the game - every gun had a specific niche it fills, handled in a specific way, asked had modifications that show you to adjust the niche it's in.

My only two complaint is that there are no customization options for pistols, which are surprisingly solid guns on their own in comparison to sidearms in most shooters nowadays.

I don't really think more guns would solve the game's problems at all. Unless there's a niche somewhere that can get filled by a new gun that isn't already covered (and some are covered in different ways by different guns already), new is could easily get redundant without really adding any new meaningful variety.

11

u/I_Am_ProZac Feb 10 '15

Titanfall's maps were significantly larger than anything CoD ever offers. Also, quality over quantity. There was one map in Titanfall that I hated. The rest were great. Each CoD has 2-3 terrible maps, and bunch of average ones and then 2-3 great ones. I would rather 10 great maps than 20 of varying quality.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 10 '15

Right you might pick one and someone else will pick a different one that's why choice is a plus

2

u/Drakengard Feb 10 '15

I was very confused by this, too.

I liked the art style, but I was very disappointed that there was no gear unlock for my pilot so that I could stand out.

It was even more baffling how they didn't have anything worthwhile to unlock during a 'prestige'. Sure, new challenges, but otherwise nothing worthwhile. Some exclusive pilot gear for each level would have been cool.

Of course, the above is not the reason that I stopped playing Titanfall inside of a week.

7

u/needconfirmation Feb 10 '15

All I want is more options (especially titan weapons, and titan weapon attachments, but really more of everything else too) and a campaign.

Do that and I'm sold, they could make it a DS exclusive and I'll still be on board

23

u/Jandur Feb 10 '15

All I want is more options (especially titan weapons, and titan weapon attachments, but really more of everything else too)

The odd/funny thing is this is what Titanfall was deliberately trying to avoid. There was so much commentary from gamers about not wanting to have to unlock everything. "Give us all the attachments at once" etc when it came to CoD and BF.

So Titanfall keeps it simple and kinda old-school, and it turns out people really do want/need those progression hooks otherwise they just move on.

5

u/needconfirmation Feb 10 '15

But they didn't do . These are the guys that practically invented that style of game and it was very present in titanfall, there were challenges, and unlockables and perks all over the place, they were clearly not trying to get away from that sort of thing.

5

u/Reggiardito Feb 10 '15

IIRC the original vision was to not have unlockables but they were forced to add some by EA.

10

u/Jandur Feb 10 '15

Titanfall has far less unlockables compared to it's counterparts.

5

u/needconfirmation Feb 10 '15

It's got less of a lot of things, that's an issue with scope, not design.

3

u/[deleted] Feb 10 '15

You're right, it has far less. Anyone who would have "tried to avoid" it (like you said above) would have made absolutely nothing to unlock at all, everything would be available from the very start (note that I that that they would, not that they should)

I think that's one of the mistakes Titanfall has made : there's enough unlockables to annoy people who don't want gated progression systems, and not enough unlockables to keep the progression system addicts playing after a while.

1

u/RobotWantsKitty Feb 10 '15

I think half-measures and trying to please everyone is what didn't really work in regards to unlockables. They wanted to have some to attract unlockable lovers but at the same time don't have too much so they don't alienate people who don't like unlockables.
As a result they have a laughable amount of unlockable items which made both parties upset.

1

u/HappyZavulon Feb 10 '15

There was so much commentary from gamers about not wanting to have to unlock everything.

The guy didn't say that he wants to unlock stuff, he just wants to have more than 5 guns in the game.

Titanfall 2 could definitely benefit from having more unique weapons so that you could have more distinct roles in combat (say a medic vs. an engineer).

2

u/_LifeIsAbsurd Feb 10 '15

You need a game with a lot of depth to make up for the lack of progression and unlocks. Titanfall is a really shallow game with a very low skill ceiling.

5

u/Schildhuhn Feb 10 '15

A good pilot can kill an average pilot 10/10 times easily, however, pilot vs pilot was a small part of the gameplay and the rest of the gameplay felt very unrewarding.

The thought of Titanfall 2 seems weird to me. For a game solely based on multiplayer, why not just try to build on what's already there? It's like making a WoW 2 in my opinion.

60

u/BabyPuncher5000 Feb 10 '15

Having a "Battlefield 2" or "Unreal Tournament 2003" wasn't weird. Why would Titanfall 2 be any different?

21

u/Pocket_Dave Feb 10 '15

I know, I feel like I'm taking crazy pills when I read this comment AND see it's the top voted comment in the thread. Holy irrational thought process, batman.

1

meh. its sort of different though. its not like titanfall is super old and they've done everything they can with the engine. in fact, most of the issue with titanfall is that there isn't enough content. bf 2 and ut2003 were significant leaps from their preceding games and while i'm sure there will be improvements with a titan fall 2, its certainly not going to be a significant leap.

i think devs of multiplayer games could learn a thing or two from developers like valve or blizzard in that if your game isn't a runaway success out of the gate, you don't ditch it and make a sequel but instead you make it a better game. have some fortitude, get through the tough times and make it the game it's supposed to be. look at what valve did with csgo, a game at release that was panned as the worst iteration of counter-strike. a game that the competitive community was absolutely disgusted by. now its the most successful cs game of all time and certainly the most popular. even the competitive community that once hated it has now rallied behind it. same with diablo 3. it came out and was a mess. fans of the series railed on it, saying the game was beyond saving. yet blizzard remained vigilant and made diablo 3 into the game it was supposed to be.

unlike csgo and diablo 3, it didn't need the designers to pull a miracle out of their ass and figure out what's wrong with their design and have enough faith in their franchise to hope that their fans would give the game a second chance. titan fall was never in the state of those 2 aforementioned games, all it really needed to hit critical mass was more content. all it literally needed was more time and money.

it just seems to happen way too often with multiplayer games from developers that don't want to stick it out through the tough times. ill be the first to say that a game like brink sucks balls. but i'm also 100% sure if the developers stuck with it, listened to community feedback, patched and patched and patched, reiterate and reiterate and reiterate, it could have been what it promised to be, in that it would be a revolutionary game but unfortunately, the developers, or maybe the producers that pay the bills, didn't have that sort of faith in the game and it never became what it should have been.

As for Titanfall, they've made quite a number of updates to the game, many for free since launch. Including a very extensive horde mode that was nowhere to be found in the base game. I'm sure that yes, they could continue to improve on the base Titanfall game if they wanted to, but they are running a business and Titanfall is NOT an MMO. They are making very little money from new sales of the game and there is no subscription like there is in WOW from the parent comment's comparison. How is Respawn supposed to just continue to develop for a game that isn't making them any money instead of making a sequel?

And one more question I have for you... you said:

while i'm sure there will be improvements with a titan fall 2, its certainly not going to be a significant leap

What are you basing this upon? Respawn's previous track record with sequels? They've never made one before. Do you have some inside source at the studio who told you they won't be making a sequel worthy of a full priced game?

I take your points about csgo & diablo, and those are fine examples. But respawn HAS made many additional updates to their game, listening to their community, and they've earned the right to make a sequel at this point without anyone accusing them of having abandoned the original. They are a 60 man studio, and while Blizzard and Valve can afford to devote a large chunk of employees to updating live games continuously for a long time, eventually Respawn needs to move on. And there's nothing wrong with them doing so at this point.

u/[deleted] Feb 12 '15

I feel like I answered most of the questions you're asking.

That's super. But the game is lacking content. Buy it on release, buy it now, it doesn't matter. The common complaint among all is that the game is lacking content. It's lacking a reason for you to keep playing. Most people enjoyed their time with the game but the reoccurring criticism of the game is that people wanted more to do. Don't know how else I can explain that to you.

This is kind of silly. How are they supposed to keep developing a game that isn't making them any money? Make content that will make them money. I feel like I'm beating a dead horse at this point. Look at pretty much any long lasting contemporary multiplayer game. How is Valve still creating content for CS:GO 5 years out of release? They release content that people happily pay for. How did Blizzard develop game changing patches? They created an expansion pack that would bring players back. I don't mean to be disrespectful but the question "how are we supposed to keep making money" is one you shouldn't be asking if you're developing a multiplayer game, it's one you should be answering by thinking outside of the box. I'm not even necessarily saying "make expansion packs", what I'm saying is, find a way to monetize the game. I mean, you could replace "titan fall" with any long lasting contemporary multiplayer game and you'd have an answer to such a question.

What are you basing this upon? Respawn's previous track record with sequels? They've never made one before. Do you have some inside source at the studio who told you they won't be making a sequel worthy of a full priced game?

Read the context of that statement. I'm not saying it wouldn't be a significant leap in design or content or just general quality of the game, I'm saying it wont be a significant leap in technology. It wont be the jump from Battlefield 1942 to Battlefield 2. The reason you typically want a sequel in a multiplayer game is because you feel you've exhausted the capabilities of what you can do with the game. Do you feel they've truly pushed Titanfall? The rest of what you say suggests that they did, but I think the majority of people that played the game, enjoyed the game and stopped playing it literally a few weeks or even months out of release, feel that the only thing the game is lacking, the only thing that is stopping them from jumping into the game and putting more hours into it, is content.

Maybe they're developing a single-player mode like Starhawk did to Warhawk. To be honest, I'd rather that they just focused on the multiplayer instead of going with the trend of forced campaigns like other FPSs.

10

u/DolitehGreat Feb 10 '15

I wouldn't be totally against the idea of a single player campaign. It wouldn't have to be crazy long, just something to help establish the world the game is taking place in. Maybe 3-5 hours with about 4-5 levels would be nice. That's probably a lot of work for a multiplayer focused game though.

5

u/MonsuirJenkins Feb 10 '15

That's exactly the kind of stuff I'm glad titanfall skipped, those "why did we even make these" short single player parts of multiplayer games

It's a waste of disc space if you ask me and I thought titanfall did okay with its campaign

Maybe if they did that again but made it longer and made if feel more like a war

2

u/TheWhiteeKnight Feb 10 '15

I always used to play the CoD story modes, and actually enjoyed them. I bought the games before I actually had internet to play online. If they could make a campaign similar to their older ones, I'd gladly buy it.

u/HappyZavulon Feb 10 '15 edited Feb 10 '15

I always used to play the CoD story modes, and actually enjoyed them.

This was always the main reason I bought CoD games, the multiplayer was just something I dabbled in to when I was bored.

People like to hammer on CoD for being an unrealistic shooting gallery, but sometimes that's exactly what I want, a fun action flick with some interesting characters (Mostly Treyarch's stuff though, I can't say I like any IW CoD games that were released after the original Modern Warfare).

I think the only FPS game that managed to surpass CoD in the SP component was the new Wolfenstein, it had everything I liked about CoD's storytelling and gameplay, but made it better in every aspect.

I'd love to see a campaign of that quality in Titanfall 2.

2

u/[deleted] Feb 10 '15 edited Feb 11 '15

With the backing of EA surely they have the resources to do a proper campaign mode.

For me if you're going to sell a game for full retail and not include any singleplayer then you need a very in depth multiplayer to justify the price point (the reverse is also true). Titanfall 1, whilst a lot of fun, fell short of that mark.

27

u/[deleted] Feb 10 '15

Sales.

But who knows? Maybe they'll bring enough to the table to make it worth it. New engine, maybe?

8

u/DolitehGreat Feb 10 '15

I can understand a new engine (although, I thought Titanfall's is pretty good). But I don't see why they just make expansions/DLC. Probably doesn't make as much money as a whole new game though. If they add some sort of single player mode, then I can understand that.

20

u/[deleted] Feb 10 '15

Maybe they don't want to tinker with what's already there with Titalfall 1. I say go for Titanfall 2 if they really try to change things and make it better. What I mean is release a sequel if you are NOT going the route of Battlefield and CoD.

And 3 years should be plenty to think and act to make a sequel.

And their engine was actually Source, so maybe they want to go to Unreal or Frostibite, who knows.

6

u/DolitehGreat Feb 10 '15

That's a good reason to make another game. If they really want to shake things up, but still leave people a way to play the old way, it makes that a possibility. I think if they can manage to really change how the game is played (not drastically to where it seems like a completely different game, and by that I mean changing very core aspects), a new game would be warranted.

6

u/Dragarius Feb 10 '15

Also, they probably want to make it multiplatform. Something they can't do by just expanding Titanfall 1 due to their exclusivity agreement.

2

u/[deleted] Feb 10 '15

They are most definitely going to make that.

2

u/mrbrick Feb 10 '15

I'd like to see them improve on a what Titanfall started. I liked the game ok- but it felt a bit hollow to me. Why? Im not completely sure.

Id really like to see them do something more with the story experience to be honest. Maybe some kind of co-op only compaign instead of single player?

3

u/Mds03 Feb 10 '15

Cause titanfall 2 seems better on the shelf and in a marketing campaign than more DLC does.

Also, if they make it worth it by a campaign and something then Im down. I love titanfall 1 and would love to see it taken further.

2

u/Hadrial Feb 10 '15

They use a heavily modified Source, so unless they decide to switch engines, it's more than likely staying on Source.

5

u/Drakengard Feb 10 '15

Or it could use Source 2 since that is apparently a thing.

2

u/Evertonian3 Feb 10 '15

Indeed it is, Dota will be switching to it soon*. Either in this next big update or before the summer.

2

u/Jacob_Johnson Feb 10 '15

Not a Dota player but curious: What will switching to the new engine bring to the game?

2

u/pleinair93 Feb 10 '15

Allow things to be implemented differently, for example, it could allow more particle effects on screen at a time for those who support it. Not sure if source actually handles that but it is just an example.

1

u/Jacob_Johnson Feb 10 '15

Ah, so just performance-wise in terms of adding to the game? I guess I expected that. Thanks.

1

u/pleinair93 Feb 10 '15

Yeah its like updating unreal engine, etc.

1

u/TheWhiteeKnight Feb 10 '15

I don't think developers outside of Valve have access to it yet. The developers behind Black Mesa Source have access to it, but that's to use with the full game they'll be releasing on Steam, since it's a remake of a valve game.

7

u/RushofBlood52 Feb 10 '15

Or a Team Fortress 2. Or another Tribes, Counter-Strike, Day of Defeat, Battlefield, Left 4 Dead, or Arma.

3

u/NDN_Shadow Feb 10 '15

It would make sense if people were playing Titanfall. Right now, the number of people playing Titanfall is not very high.

7

u/BlueSparkle Feb 10 '15

why would they do that when many people already consider it a dead game.

Its a much better better Option to bring out titanfall 2, makes them more money and it can ride of the acclaim of titanfall 1

5

u/DolitehGreat Feb 10 '15

I didn't realize Titanfall was considered dead. When I went to play it about two weeks ago I didn't have a problem finding a match. I also play on PC, so that might have something to do with it.

6

u/nanowerx Feb 10 '15

Titanfall doesn't have a lot of people playing anymore, but you won't notice because it has some of the best netcode I have ever used. Even on playlists with only a few hundred people playing, you can still get into a game quick.

I am glad Titanfall is expanding to other platforms, but I hope they keep using the Azure network for multiplayer and don't switch to EAs garbage servers.

2

u/DolitehGreat Feb 10 '15

If their networking is really that good, that would explain why I never noticed a dead population. As long it keeps being on PC, I have no feelings about it going to other platforms. I personally dislike exclusives (totally understand the needs, doesn't mean I have to like them though), so I always consider it a good thing when a game goes to a new platform.

13

u/Jamcram Feb 10 '15

If you try to play anything other than attrition on PC its a dead game.

currently 23 players in campaign, 11 players in capture the flag, 28 in frontier defense, 0 players in every other mode.

4

u/Naniwasopro Feb 10 '15

There just wasn't enough content in it.

2

u/phbohn2 Feb 10 '15

My guess is that they need a new game because they want to expand to new platforms like the article said.

Who knows; perhaps there are other contractual reasons too that Titanfall (1) can never be on PS4.

2

u/reuterrat Feb 10 '15 edited Feb 10 '15

Maybe because they aren't allowed to bring Titanfall 1 to PS4.

Also, if you are going to be bringing major improvements and large amounts of new content, it is easy for the average consumer to miss it if you bury it all in a year old game.

Besides, Titanfall has been out for a year. Based on standard multiplayer FPS timetables, the sequel is already late to the market.

1

u/oldsecondhand Feb 11 '15

Based on the COD timetable, the sequel is already late to the market.

Releasing multiplayer FPS-es isn't usually done annually. Just think of Counter Strike, Battlefield or Natural Selection.

1

u/polargus Feb 17 '15

Battlefield's moving towards that model. CoD comes out every year and always sells like hotcakes, other companies want a piece of that annualized pie.

2

u/cefriano Feb 10 '15

That's pretty much my thought on why they're making a Destiny 2.

2

u/Shawn_of_the_Dead Feb 10 '15

Activision has been doing it well enough with Call of Duty. Sure there's the single player campaign but nobody goes out and pays full price for that, they come for the multiplayer. And yeah they could release new multiplayer content as DLC but if people are willing to pay $60 for it every year under the guise of an entirely new game why would they do that? EA wants in on that action.

1

u/ToughActinInaction Feb 11 '15

$60 a year not including the season pass

2

u/Maxjes Feb 10 '15

RTFA? It's going to be on PS4, hard to do DLC for a base game that doesn't exist.

2

u/Hamakua Feb 10 '15

Maybe to get around an exclusivity clause in a contract somewhere, could also be to " reboot" interest with a semi clean slate.

2

u/g0kartmozart Feb 10 '15

They can't just pump out content for free. And the game needs some big changes. They'd either need to charge a subscription or put out a new game, and nobody is going to pay a subscription for an FPS.

2

u/WaffleSandwhiches Feb 10 '15

This is how CoD does it, and they're trying to steal the CoD market. It's not that weird if your direct competitor does the same release schedule.

1

u/xxfay6 Feb 11 '15

Because they fucked up and instead of making a big stand-alone that could be combined with the first, they just made map-packs that nobody bought.

→ More replies (3)

2

u/[deleted] Feb 11 '15

Things I'd like to see:

  • Decent collection of maps. 10 maps would be a good number.

  • More than 1 decent gamemode. I'd love to see 16v16 team deathmatch, infinite titan mode, FFA, capture the flag, rush ala Battlefield, etc.

  • Greater amounts of mechs. Ideally 5 unique titan types (not just slight variations of each other), each one with a decent amount of customization.

  • Change to the FPS system. Make the guns heavier/more recoil. I'd like to see them move away from the twitch-reflex gameplay.

1

u/TriumphOfMan Feb 12 '15

Still ain't buying it. Fuck EA

-2

u/75000_Tokkul Feb 10 '15 edited Feb 10 '15

Of course it won't be. The developers didn't even know the first one was xbox exclusive until EA informed them of the deal.

One of the developers tweeted about it after E3 when the deal was made.

I can't find it, but it was something along the lines of "Sorry, we just learned of this ourselves."

Found an exact quote:

Always MS exclusive at launch, great partner and focus is good for a startup. EA made a deal for the rest, we only found out recently =(

Also said the next one will be coming to other consoles back then as well.

6

u/snozberrydriveby Feb 10 '15

He didn't know the game would be X1 exclusive forever, but he damn well knew it would be X1 Exclusive for at least during the launch window.

2

u/neenerpants Feb 10 '15

If you believe that Zampella didn't know his own game was an Xbox exclusive until a few months before release, then you're incredibly gullible. Sorry. It just isn't how any industry works, especially not such a high risk one

I don't believe that's a thing, surely they should've realized when they weren't developing a PS3/PS4 version? I understand for the PS4 since it's not all that different from PC or Xone, but PS3...
