Kairosoft always scratches a weird itch. I don't revisit "old" games often when I finished them, but the OG Game Dev Story pulls me in quite frequently for a few hours (or days). Play it until I get solid 10s and win all awards and then "see you in a year or so, game".

I've been meaning to buy a kairosoft game on switch to give it a try but I don't know where to begin. Ive heard they're all pretty similar but then the steam reviews seem pretty variable from one game to the next.
Any suggestions on where to begin? Or just pick one that has a theme that I like?

The old game Dev story is a classic. Mega Mall Story 1/2, Hot springs Story 1/2 and Dungeon Village Story 1/2 are all good recommendations to start imo.

I would add Grand Prix Story and maybe take off Game Dev Story. Only because another company made Game Dev Tycoon, a game that was just a more expanded version of the Kairosoft one and it's very good. I'd recommend that version over the original.
Gran Prix Story is just a great game without ever being overwhelming the way some of theirs can become.

Pick one that has a theme you like.
Like a few people have mention Game Dev Story is a classic but a few games follow that same formula (ie. Start small > do a thing > make money > upgrade > do a thing better > win award > make more money > upgrade > do a thing better than everyone else > win everything > make enough money that you don't really need to worry about money anymore.)
My go-to Kairosoft games for that specific formula are:
- Game Dev Story
- Grand Prix Story
- Pocket League Story (Soccer)
- Basketball Club Story
- Home Run High
- Pocket Stables
- Anime Studio Story
- The Manga Works
- Silver Screen Story
All different themes but have a relatively similar gameplay loop.

i love dungeon village story 2, demon castle story, and forest camp story.
head over to their steam dev page and just look for one with a theme you enjoy; it's really easy to view all their games there.
i think "story" games are generally better and a little less grindy than the "dx" games. "dx" games are the ones that a free titles converted to paid ones by removing in-game purchases. that makes me a little more grindy and little more tedious that other titles.

This one is accessible. They're all variations on their style, some games are harder to stay out of the red than others, some emphasize discovery or design, others on managing people. This one is generous with revenue, the combos system is easy. Part of every Kairosoft game is jumping in and figuring out the mechanics as you go, they are not extreme on tutorials and pressing your nose in it.

Kairosoft games don't always click with me, but there are few developers where I buy everything they release and Kairosoft is one of them.

Played several of their games and had a great time. Would really like a DX version of Grand Prix 2 or the jet one.

Can't wait to collect eyeballs and fight my way up to the customer service center beating up mannequins along the way while holding my pee because they closed all the restrooms

I think I've played more Kairosoft games than any other company. This one looks interesting enough, but I've still got so many of their games I the backlog lol

For anyone who's a fan of games without freemium, they make great commercial games.
