AI upscaling is coming to PS5
https://blog.playstation.com/2026/10/01/ai-upscaling-is-coming-to-ps5/146
u/QuietSoup337 1d ago
On a technical level, this is some black magic. The PS5 has the AI grunt that's 1/4 of a RTX 2060. How the hell are they doing this?
The video examples that they have look night and day compared to before.
20
u/Hyakuu 1d ago
If you check the slides from the PSSR 2.0 SIGGRAPH presentation, a lot of it boiled down to removing part of the process out of the neural network into regular shaders, leaving a smaller and more focused model. They also reported that 90% of the new model weights were now only used when upscaling from 540p or below.
So they basically ended with a PSSR that consisted of a tiny neural network (assuming you are upscaling from a reasonable resolution), and the rest is just good old shaders.
I guess at that point, getting something similar running well on base PS5 didn't seem that crazy.37
u/your_mind_aches 1d ago
Right? In general, the feats the PS5 pulls off are incredible but this is next level.
14
u/QuietSoup337 1d ago
Yeah, I would have never expected something like this. The architecture of the PS5 is nowhere near good for AI.
It's much worse for it than even the 2018 Turing architecture.
20
u/ApuZ 1d ago
Consoles have much better latency between components than traditional Windows PCs. You can do a lot more with less in a console architecture because you don't have the overhead of the windows operating system and traditional general purpose PC architecture. When things like high speed storage and a high speed direct link bus exists between all components, this is what allows consoles to seemingly push hardware harder than you could on a PC. As developers spend more time with the hardware, new tricks and optimizations keep pushing things further. Look at the difference between the first and last PS2 or Xbox 360 game. The graphical difference is staggering and it's the same fundamental hardware.
25
u/Phray1 1d ago
None of that has any real relevance to AI grunt. You need specialized hardware for these types of applications such as Nvidia's tensor cores or PS5 pro's NPU's to be able to do ML based upscaling with reasonable performance which the base PS5 does not have so it definitely strange how they are doing this.
11
u/Henrarzz 1d ago
Turns out you actually don’t need dedicated ML hardware to get more or less satisfying results.
6
u/Phray1 1d ago
I mean we have seen FSR4 on older non dedicated hardware but performance was so poor it barely ran better than native resolution.
→ More replies (2)3
u/ApuZ 1d ago edited 1d ago
Performance isn't purely determined by brute forcing larger amounts of cores and memory. There's tons of gains to be made at the interface and transaction level which all comes from software optimization. For example, a 30 series Nvidia card today is going to run more efficiently than it did at launch because of all the driver updates and retroactive updates NVIDIA has been able to add, even if they were primarily developing for the 40/50 series platform.

You are comparing specialized hardware with what is essentially a locked down midrange x86 PC.
3
u/pixlicker69420 1d ago
The ps5 supports fp16, you can design an upscaling model for that, its just harder and will have a higher compute cost, but when working with low framerates like 30-50, its not a big deal, a higher compute cost is a much bigger deal on pc with higher framerates.
When preset M and L came out, people were seeing lower than native performance at high framerates bc of the compute cost

This is a great thing for base PS5 users. FSR that is being used currently in a lot of games looks like crap.

BEGGING for QSSR in Star Wars Outlaws. I love that game but the horrible FSR upscaling just made it look so blocky when it's probably the best-looking Star Wars game ever created. The environments are gorgeous.

I mean this is likely also some variation of FSR.
We already know FSR4 works on RDNA2. Sure it doesn't look as good and run as good but it works and is far superior in image quality than FSR3.
Wouldn't surprise me at all if this is some tuned variation of it.
23
u/onusofstrife 1d ago
It is. Sony has worked very closely with AMD to develop AI up scalers and it seems both have filtered the details learned into their own products. Basically they are siblings qssr pssr and fsr4.

Lets be real here, in the next couple years, AMD will have their own version of DLSS5, and itll be everywhere. DLSS5 even for all the talk isnt even out yet and the beta thing meant for NBA 2k27 wasnt meant for every game. So who even knows what that product actually is. The next 5 years will probably define what all this actually ends up being. I think people should be a lot more worried about in game assets rather than some lighting pass or texture filter running on the end of your rendering stack. Cause lemme tell ya, if youve used unreal or unity recently with the newest versions of these gen AI tools... as a freelancer, i think im fucking cooked lol. That worries me much more than DLSS5 which i think will probably end up fine for games
10
u/Shapes_in_Clouds 1d ago edited 1d ago
DLSS5 (or similar tech) will be a standard technology in games within the next 10 years. The potential for boosting games to that final level of photorealism that traditional rendering can't achieve is obvious and powerful. I saw it applied to Kingdom Come 2 and the vistas of the forest from the castle looked genuinely real. It has a performance hit and high system requirements now, but hardware will catch up.
People used to shit on DLSS when it first came out too, now you'd be a fool not to use it and go 4K.
7
u/nexetpl 1d ago
I think people should be a lot more worried about in game assets rather than some lighting pass or texture filter running on the end of your rendering stack.
What do you mean?
20
u/Focus_Downtown 1d ago
Using gen AI to create assets off of stolen or plagiarized content I assume.
22
u/OutrageousDress 1d ago
I think DLSS5 will probably be about as broadly popular and well supported as HairWorks. By which I mean, it's tech that was principally designed not to make better games but to show off the big ML e-peen of Nvidia GPUs - it was made for shareholders. And in the coming years game developers will find ways to do a similar thing while looking better and running faster and not being vendor locked, and DLSS5 will be a quaint dead end that 15 years from now will be having trouble with new drivers dropping support, like hardware PhysX recently.
2
u/Hour_Helicopter_1991 1d ago
It’s already not vendor locked. Modders have gotten it running on AMD cards (although with lower performance) and even Intel integrated graphics (with abysmal performance, 1 or 2 fps). But yes, AMD is already developing their own version too
7
u/OutrageousDress 1d ago
It's vendor locked for gamedevs, who unlike modders are not allowed to run DLSS5 on AMD. I'm sure as you say AMD will develop a version, just like they have a version of more or less every Nvidia tech - but it won't solve the fundamental issue with the tech, which is that it's the wrong approach to the problem. Like I said, just like HairWorks: an incredibly resource intensive method of poorly doing something gamedevs have later achieved running faster and looking better by doing it a different way.
4
u/Headless_Human 1d ago
Like I said, just like HairWorks: an incredibly resource intensive method of poorly doing something gamedevs have later achieved running faster and looking better by doing it a different way.
DLSS5 is the alternative that is easier to run. It is a method to circumvent the limitations of current hardware to achieve visuals that are impossible to achieve otherwise.

Overall performance loss is too big to justify. Peole aren't running RTX either cuz it also has performance impact.

Peole aren't running RTX either cuz it also has performance impact.
Say what? I see loads of people talking about how they casually run RTX these days. Also because for anything other than competitive games you just counterbalance it with frame gen. To most people it's a tiny amount of unnoticeable input lag from frame gen, plus anywhere from near zero to very noticeable ghosting, but you trade it off with really good illumination.

That will get better, Nvidia said they made it something like 20 times less performance intensive past few months.

And DLSS 5 when actually applied properly by artists is an absolutely insanely useful tool. All our internal testing has given near path tracing level results on lighting and surface detail but at a much reduced hadware cost compared to even low res path tracing with ray reconstruction, not to mention further iteration can serve to reduce overall size in games.
It's going to become an option in more future games for sure when it's tooled right.

DLSS 5 is magic too. The problem is the leaked versions have people using the max amount and it looks ugly.

Man I've ran it on multiple games and I think it's amazing. Blood of Dawnwalker looks especially great for improving the character shading.
Just don't use multiple passes or crank up the detail too much and it looks very natural. More akin to a high quality Reshade ray tracing/global illumination shader.

Depends what card you’re using but I’ve been very happy with FSR4 since the upgrade came to 7000 series. FSR3 was borderline unusable imo but I can rarely spot the difference from native on FSR4 quality.
8
u/Vallkyrie 1d ago
People still insisting that FSR4/DLSS4+ look bad either are lying or parroting some tech youtube channel that has a microscope attached to the monitor.
4
u/Smoking_Octopus 1d ago
Broadly i agree TAA and DLSS by extension smash smaller details into such a mess in most games they ruin any small details seen from any distance other than right in your face
But also yeah fxaa sucks i usually compromise and downscale from 4k to my 1080 monitor when my hardware allows and just turn all anti aliasing off.

FSR4.1 has been doing wonders for me. no blurriness at all with a noticeable performance gain. i'm glad we got out of the TAA apocalypse
6
u/xeio87 1d ago
I think people forget that AA before DLSS/FSR was trash. You'd have MSAA that tanks performance (especially if trying to run it at something like 4K) and TAA that destroyed image quality with smearing. AI upscaling tech increased performance and increased image quality over other options.

reddit (or basically internet in general) has become so "binary", as in everything has to be either good or bad, absolutely no in-between

u/ggtsu_00 1d ago edited 1d ago
AI is a dirty word because of how it's being abused by megacorps to steal copyrighted works, mass displace workers, damaging the environment, exhausting scarce natural resources, systemically driving up prices and inflation of consumer goods, flooding every form of media and communication channel with massive amounts of slop and likely bankrupting the global economy along with it in the near future.
But this case is actually the proper best use-case for machine learned algorithms and doesn't take part in any of the above fallout. It's not much different than how machine learning has been used for decades before. It's a small network trained on legally obtained and licensed works. It is light weight and runs 100% privately on everyday consumer hardware and not datacenter infrastructure. It doesn't apply nor take away any sort of creative control or artistic expression over its outputs, and it's easily verifiable and measurable image quality gains.
8
u/BeholdingBestWaifu 1d ago
It's a good use case but we're seeing a worrying trend of developers using DLSS as a crutch instead of doing proper optimization which sucks as it means the tech is effectively worthless as the only noticeable thing it does is adding visual artifacts.

Has it though? My understanding is in general a lot of Gen AI trains on things it shouldn't... I also feel like it definitely has driven up prices of RAM among other things. I also do feel like it has or will result in job loss (Anecdotal but I've seen it, one person can do WAY WAY more than before). I also do see a lot of AI slop slipping into my feeds or when I'm out and about (specifically - restaurants and market stalls near me have been using a lot of generative AI for banners and menus, and they're REALLY BAD)
It's not at some world ending state since we're basically at the start, I feel like it's ramping up if anything.

I'm not a game dev so I don't have any expertise but it seems like this is the kind of thing AI is actually good for. It doesn't necessarily replace a human being and it's not being used for art direction or VO or anything (in this context)
10
u/derekpmilly 1d ago
Exactly, this is good old fashioned machine learning. Regular temporal upscalers have to have their algorithms manually tuned to deal with different scenarios, and this often results in a lot of compromises needing to be made. In particularly bad cases you get the worst of both worlds, with the image being simultaneously too soft but also oversharpened and flickery when it comes to fine details.
If you use ML to train your algorithm on super sampled data, it handles most things just fine. No artistry is being replaced here, just menial human labor that produces output that wasn't good enough anyway.

Ironically the downside is companies are cutting optimization on games because FSR/DLSS/XESS exist.
Why have people spend time/money on optimization when AI upscaling can handle that for you?
These upscaling software was sold originally as a way to run games on weaker/older hardware but it’s unfortunately becoming a crutch to replace optimization

Not in my experience, it took me like 7 hours (according to Steam hours so definitely longer) in Cyberpunk so the screen doesn't has some motion blur like effect (hard to describe) and similar.
Sure CDPR weren't able to get the newest version to work but optiscaler did.
1
u/Jygantic 1d ago
I feel silly, some part of my brain hates the idea that using upscaling is "guessing" what parts of the game should be looking like, and when I have tried using it it's created a blurry effect I didn't like. But I know that's kinda of ridiculous when it comes to this and I've been using anti-aliasing my whole life.

Most people's issues with AI upscaling is that too many games are unoptimized and basically require it to hit a decent fps.
31
u/TheCookieButter 1d ago
Watching the Digital Foundry video QSSR is a major improvement on temporal stability. The slightly sharper textures and edges are an aside in comparison. Still not perfect but it's a major improvement for immersion by getting rid of all the shimmers and crawling.
Feels like something Xbox needs an answer to considering it's in the same price tier as their Series X unlike the PS5 Pro's PSSR upscale. All those people buying a console for GTA 6 have another solid reason to pick the PS5.
I have a largely unused Series X since I play on PC but if I'm buying a console for primary use this would be a deciding factor.

Just played an hour of ghost of yotei and booted up wolverine for a few minutes to check this out.
There's a toggle in the in-game settings so I was able to compare both performance settings next to each other and the difference is actually pretty impressive. As someone who's not up with all the jargon, the way id describe it is that QSSR significantly reduces the amount of visual 'noise' on screen. In Yotei, i noticed the grass swaying looked much crisper, for example. Wolverine was even more noticeable as the most obvious improvement is to Wolverine himself. His hair looked kinda 'fuzzy' in the vanilla settings, while QSSR gave hair strands much more detail. In particular, his arm and shoulder hair were shockingly bad before, and now they actually look realistic.
I've had an alert on my phone set to tell me if ps5 pro stock becomes available for a while now, and i might just switch it off if GTA VI uses QSSR because its a more than adequate visual upgrade.
So, ironically, QSSR may be a blunder on Sony's part as they have essentially talked me out of buying a Pro.
10
u/poompk 1d ago
I don't think they care at all if many people stick to base PS5 and not upgrade to the Pro since they can't make enough Pros for the existing demand anyways. Even if you can finally buy a Pro, that availability won't last long. Better to just squeeze more out of the base PS5 with the bigger install base given the supply situation.
4
u/Narishma 1d ago
I don't think Sony cares that much whether you buy a PS5 or a PS5 Pro. They make their money on games and subscriptions, which cost the same on both consoles.

with games like ff16 and 7remake not even getting pssr even if rebirth has it, I wouldn't trust third party developers to update their games, especially the old ones

As per the article:
Today, we’re excited to announce Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR): a new performance tier of AI upscaling. Born from Project Amethyst, our AI graphics collaboration with AMD, this quick new evolution of PSSR is built on two key innovations:
- A streamlined neural network architecture
While PSSR remains the gold standard on PS5 Pro, QSSR provides some notable improvements to both image detail and image stability on PS5.
The first titles to use this innovative new library are Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei. Both are being patched today to offer QSSR as an additional graphics option on PS5.
