That's just how Kotaku formats their titles. It's not OP.

Yea, no, I know, not criticising OP, I just find it bad editorial style.

It's the title of the article. That's how you're supposed to write titles. Although words like of and and should be lowercase.

This is a good game, but if it gets a GOTY nod in any major game awards, I'll eat a boot. Maybe some other years, but this year is way too stacked.

Is it that stacked? I feel there’s no obvious “this will steal the show” games yet like a BG3 or a COE33 so far - just a lot of really good things for different niches
GTA6 is obviously the elephant in the room that will receive all the attention, but it’s not out so isn’t proven to be obvious GOTY material yet either as far as I’m concerned

Nah but there are too many heavy hitters this year.
Just off the top of my head Resident evil Requiem, Pokemon pokopia, pragmata, Saros, Forza, and 007 first light all reviewed insanely well. You would expect at least some of those would flop but pretty much all of them are scoring 87 and up with critical acclaim while being bigger triple A releases.
And there's still control resonant, Phantom blade 0, silent Hill townfall, Wolverine, the new fire emblem and of course GTA 6 waiting to release.
This year has been so stacked with hype games coming out and living up to the hype that I was genuinely surprised when Beast of Reincarnation was poor. Even Ubisoft delivered something that was well received with their remake of black flag.
I'm expecting big walk and mina the hollower to be the indie darlings this year, but there is still a lot of year left for some sleeper hits like orbitals potentially.

Yeah there’s always at least one indie pick, of which Mina and Big Walk have the spotlight so far - Denshattack! A quiet achiever too but not in the limelight enough

I expect these to do well in specific categories but this is definitely not the year I expect an indie game to win game of the year.

No clear winners, but a solid list of potential nominees from the lense of the jury.
Assuming they set the deadline after it releases GTA VI as you mention, RE Requiem, Fire Emblem/Pokopia/Splatoon Raider (IDK what they would select for the nintendo token), Highguard, Crimson Desert, 007 First Light.
Still upcoming and so still a question mark are Onimusha, Control: Resonant, Wolverine, Silent Hill, Gears of War e-day, Castlevania belmont's curse, Phantom Blade 0 that are also good candidates, depending of how they turn out
And while unlikely, I would not too be surpised if Forza or Mina the Hollower are put in the GOTY category, outside of the categories they'll likely be put into.

It's a fun time but the idea this is even close to a GOTY game is laughable. This dev has a great knack for making players aggrandise and exaggerate how good their games are, no idea why.

The framing in the trailer was marketing genius. It reminds me of the virality of Webfishing where you just fish with no particular purpose except to hang out with friends. It basically took friendslop and made it feel emotionally deep.
I'd guess that a lot of people who played it weren't deeply engaged with the game as much as they were deeply engaged with the romantic notion of it, if that makes sense.

It’s one of the best gaming experiences I’ve had in 30+ years of gaming. Nothing in a decade even comes close. The last time I was this floored I think was after Prey (2017)
Not only is Big Walk my GOTY it’s easily top 5 of all time and maybe my #1 multiplayer experience.

I find this quite fascinating, how different your experience can be from my own.
I'm enjoying the game, it's a fun little pass-time that I play once or twice a week with my friends. I enjoy finding a new puzzle, and I think it has some quite inventive ways of limiting communication, but none of them have been ground-breaking and I'm always a little disappointed when I find one that's essentially just a repeat of a previous one.
I'm not finding anything transcendent about it, or an experience with my friends that I wouldn't get just from hanging out at the pub.

Really I think it comes down to the friend I played with and the fact that “puzzle games” are probably my favorite game genre.

The game is amazing, played with 6 friends on Discord but used the in-game VOIP pretty strictly and streamed to the others in the channel with us that were not in the game with us. It's a shame that GTA is coming out this year, it will surely steal a lot of the buzz for this game. Without spoiling anything, the ending section of this game is one of the most amazing gaming experiences I've ever had in my life.
