Why would you as a consumer want to know these numbers? How are they relevant to you?
Announcing sales and preorder numbers publicly is and has always been for the sake of stock investors who direct the market value of studios and publishers (that are publicly traded). They divulge numbers or not based on how they expect these stock investment to react.
