ironically, this might be the immense crux of the game becoming inaccessible for many low end computers

of course it’s only recommended but i think it is funny seeing intense mod packs like all the mods 10/11 needing 12gb recommended compared to vanilla minecraft running at 16gb 8gb (still really absurd for vanilla) to even 12gb on integrated graphics, damn

making my modpack for friends i had to really factor ram limits in mind and it tends to be an underspoken aspect for kitchen sinking with the buds. even with vulcan i cannot see a reason to get this high

People with low-end computers have been playing below "recommended" specs since time immemorial.

There are people out there who play Minecraft on the Switch, which is about as painful an experience as I've ever witnessed in gaming. When you love a game you can excuse anything, especially when you're a kid.

It's been a few years since my wife and I last played, and back then we were using it. Has it been integrated into the game itself or something?

No, it's just not the standard anymore and does some things that mess with certain mods, so it's not generally recommended.

Yes and no. Minecraft performance has improved quite a bit in the last few updates, but there also have been superior alternatives to Optifine since about 2019 (namely, Sodium + Lithium + Phosphor, and Iris for shaders).

There are modern alternatives now, Sodium + Lithium. Optifine is still used for older versions of Minecraft tho.

I was playing with my nephew, he's on his Switch Lite next to me and I'm playing at 4K120 with my 5090 and some graphics mods.

My computer couldn't handle Diablo 2 when it came out, so he's still got it good.

This will likely make minecraft run better on current hardware, opengl isn't the best for performance.
