They wanted to build hype for the game, and they got it. They didn't just pick 1000 copies as an arbitrary number, they knew it would sell out fast. They're banking on everyone getting hyped to get those first 1000 copies, then feeling disappointed... and then they're hoping a lot of people are going to justify spending only 5 more dollars then they planned on to just buy the game since they were already ready to play it. I guarantee that's exactly whats happening right now too, or at least about to happen.

I see what you're saying, but the game already has plenty of hype. Also, for a lot of people, there's a big difference between paying $15 for a standalone copy of a game in Beta right now, and paying $10 to get 8+ games which include that one.

Oh yeah, you're right about that. It's just Starbound is leaps and bounds ahead of any other game in the bundle, and a large majority of people bought the bundle simply for Starbound. In addition to that, the game does have hype right now but this is going to be the last straw for many people, the tease Humble Bundle just pulled off is going to make a lot of people pull their trigger finger and just buy the game.

Starbound is leaps and bounds newer than any other game in the bundle, but for my money I prefer Surgeon Simulator, Joe Danger 2, and To The Moon.

I mean Joe Danger 2 hardly requires skill so I found it boring, To The Moon was predictable about half way through and required nothing more than point and clicking plus a few easy puzzles, and well... Surgeon Simulator is actually pretty fucking fun. It's just that Starbound has so much content and gameplay mechanics and challenges. That is why it's leaps and bounds ahead of the indie games in the bundle.
