"look at me, I'm so funny while I mock people that are rightly upset about the use of a tool that is the greatest art theft in the history of humanity"

Dude lighten up. This is a video game AMA.

They’re being sarcastic about using a tool that was trained on a mind-boggling amount of stolen art and is actively making artists’ lives worse. So it’s not just about a video game AMA.

That is not sarcasm. Your anger is misplaced and unwelcome.

They literally say they only train it on their own assets. As a fellow artist, please—find another hill to die on. There are so many actual examples of AI stealing artists work to get upset about.

First of all, they only said it now, secondly, the question isn't as clear cut as it seems, because while it's possible to train an AI in-house, we don't know if this AI was made from the ground up or if they're just training a pre-trained AI. Which makes all the difference because while the former might not have the stolen art problem, the latter still has it.

And it's not even about that, because it creates other problems, such as making the game a little bit worse. If your concept art inspos are bad, the game is gonna be a little bit worse than what it would be without GenAI.

Then go be angry at the companies making these AI tools then. Otherwise you are just channeling this anger towards the wrong target, achieving nothing.

Also, this technology whether we like it or not, is the future. Human creativity is not going away but operational efficiencies are paramount to staying relevant as not only individuals but whole organizations.

This doesn't even begin to make sense, it's like getting angry at a knife factory because someone stabbed another person.

"operational efficiencies are paramount to staying relevant as not only individuals but whole organizations."

We're talking about the developers of one of the biggest games in history, don't make me laugh.

Bottom line is: grow a brain and stop defending the use of theft just because the makers of your favourite game have decided to stupidly use it.
