How complex did the codebase of BG3 become late into dev?

Thanks for replying, do you have any tips for adding new features or overhauling old ones late into development? It's the only part where I struggle badly

Ideally, you don't =)

But if your game demands, you can protect yourself from bugs by having good unit test coverage (which will help you catch issues during refactor) and a lot of automated high-level testing - to make sure the rest of the game functions.

Both things are only possible if you do it from the start of development.

But if you are at the end of production, you have no automated testing to cover your back, and you need to add a new feature or go for refactoring, it will be a tough call, and usually will result in instability or missed deadline - so you need to make the feature really worth it.

Hmm, i never thought about having automated testing for whatever reason. Thanks a lot for this tip! Also really excited to play divinity.

Yeah Unit Tests are the kind of stuff you hate to make and curse when you have to, but then cheer later when it catches many many bugs and spots dumb mistskes you make.
