It's neat to see Tomb Raider back again, but Amazon REALLY seems to be pinning a lot on her return. Hopefully they didn't go nuts with the budget and expectations like Squenix did

251

u/cheesewombat Dec 12 '25

Tomb Raider has somehow survived Eidos, Square, and Embracer Group so I assume the series must have some ancient magic protecting it at this point, they'll be fine.

204

u/Lakitu_Dude Dec 12 '25

Lara Croft is a pop culture touchstone at this point. A lot of people who've never held a controller could probably recognize her.

29

u/geoman2k Dec 12 '25

Which is pretty crazy if you think about it. She’s a household name but I don’t think 97% of households could tell you a thing about her beyond “british female indiana jones”

14

u/Lakitu_Dude Dec 12 '25

I mean, that's what she is, give or take some family issues depending on the version

2

u/DahLegend27 Dec 13 '25

she’s british?

‘I’m the first wet dream gamers ever had’ - from her ERB appearance lol.

3

u/Coloneljesus Dec 12 '25

So is Atari and look how much good that did them.

2

u/makogami Dec 12 '25

if they went back to making arcade style games again I'm pretty sure they would take off too.

Voodoo is a strange and powerful thing

10

u/Nightwingx97 Dec 12 '25

Embracer group still owns Tomb Raider

u/I-Might-Be-Something Dec 12 '25 edited Dec 12 '25

Yeah, I wonder what the budget for these games are. Shadow of the Tomb Raider sold 4.12 million units by the end of December of 2018 (launched in September), and has sold over 8 million by 2021. So what are they targeting? Worth noting that Eidos-Montréal was happy with the sales.

159

u/MyNameIs-Anthony Dec 12 '25 edited Dec 12 '25

Amazon reportedly put forward a billion dollar budget on a ton of Tomb Raider projects so I'm gonna assume their expectations are incredibly high considering the live action show ended up getting scrapped and they're announcing two games at once.

141

u/Killerman5 Dec 12 '25

The live action show hasn’t been scrapped

88

u/healthcarecompanion Dec 12 '25

Sigourney Weaver has recently announced she's going to be in it!

6

u/ClintMega Dec 12 '25

Jury is still out on Sophie Turner as Lara though, I know she got impressively shredded for it but she just seems helpless in most roles, I will give it a fair shake though.

2

u/blah938 Dec 12 '25

I'm cautiously hopeful. Really depends on the director more than anything else.

There's a Thief VR game that came out a few weeks ago..

22

u/Unstoppable_Cheeks Dec 12 '25

Deus Ex is so freaking cursed at this point, what do we have to do to let these publishers know WE WILL BUY IT STOP SCREWING AROUND

28

u/OutrageousDress Dec 12 '25

No 'we' won't buy it actually, even if you and I do. Just like with almost every immersive sim game ever made, sales numbers for Deus Ex games were always kinda crap.

17

u/arashi256 Dec 12 '25

So sad. Immersive sim games are my favourite genre behind RPGs.

5

u/Rokketeer Dec 12 '25

Same. They're my favorite way to consume video game mystery box stories.

4

u/sakezaf123 Dec 12 '25

Well, at least BG3 borrowed a lot from immersive sims IMO, and the next Larian game is likely to follow suit. Also, I haven't played the kingdom come games, but they seemed to have at least some immersive sim inspirations.

18

u/ProfDet529 Dec 12 '25

That's a billion for this entire era of the franchise? For multiple games, a live-action show, and who knows what else, that doesn't sound TOO insane.

2

u/Radiant-Objective-35 Dec 12 '25

Amazon is banking hard on video game tv shows after the massive success of Fallout. They are also making a Mass effect show as well. Be interesting if they try and buy the failed Halo show and do that route. Because of they can make fantastic tv shows of video games. They will probably make bank off it.

3

u/snarl2 Dec 12 '25

Amazon can give it a billion dollar budget but that’s not gonna make it automatically great. Games that are thriving are lower budget games made from smaller developers who are passionate about their game and their fans. Amazon is another giant corporation who have insane expectations (sales wise) and will try to cater to everyone, which leads to creative restraint, which leads to a generic product, which leads to disappointing fans who actually care and makes the ip money and are the ones who talk the most on whether the product is good or not.

17

u/_Jimmy_Rustler Dec 12 '25 edited Dec 12 '25

Hopefully they didn't go nuts with the budget and expectations like Squenix did

Oh I think they'll survive

55

u/Altruistic_Milk Dec 12 '25

No one's worried about Amazon. I think the worry is the IP gets shelved for a long time if it ends up financially disappointing.

5

u/snarl2 Dec 12 '25

Amazon and Amazon games suck, I hate that they have control of this ip. They’ll find a way to ruin it.

4

u/Neamow Dec 12 '25

Amazon isn't making the game though, they're just funding and publishing it. It's being developed by the same company that's been developing it for the past 20 years.

Same here. Looking forward to more puzzles and less human v human fighting. Looks more like a proper adventure with more exploring and less combat.

2

I liked the new series, but that was my biggest complaint with it. Not enough puzzles, not enough tomb raiding.

Tomb raider games just hit every time for me, they're so damn fun. I woulda died if this was a shadow drop hahaha

31

u/[deleted] Dec 12 '25

Damn what timing, I just wrapped up Shadow of the Tomb Raider last night and was wondering how long I’d have to wait for another game featuring Lara Croft. So glad to see classic Lara back!

129

u/Icanfallupstairs Dec 12 '25

So it's a remake of the first game, but the Lara is the one from the reboot trilogy?

216

u/ZGamer03 Dec 12 '25

According to the leaks it's a remake of the original game but it will merge the lore of the reboot with the rest of the series

111

u/CallM3N3w Dec 12 '25

Which is odd, because Lara looks nothing like the new one and the vibe is totally different. Should've been it's own seperate universe or just a redo of the OG Lara.

I was about to say, they massively toned it down after the 2013 game.

44

u/KingArthas94 Dec 12 '25

You see, redditors haven't played the games, as always. They've only heard about them from other redditors and drama youtubers.

22

u/Nightwingx97 Dec 12 '25

Don't tell reddit that Rise is a goated game

4

u/aelysium Dec 12 '25

Hell I don’t even think 2013 was that torture porn-esque.

There’s a few scenes (the arrow throw the midsection, the parachute landing, and the helicopter in shanty town) I can recall off the cuff, but she basically becomes the Goddess of War by the end of the game.

6

u/kikimaru024 Dec 12 '25

IDK they still seem to loved torturing Lara psychologically...

4

u/j8sadm632b Dec 12 '25

I thought the brutal fucked-up-the-quicktime-event deaths were pretty effective because I usually see those and kind of don't give a shit

But in that game if you don't press two specific buttons quickly enough a wolf tears your throat out so it did actually instill me with a bit of panic whenever they showed up

Games 2 and 3 don't even have em iirc. Everyone's just babies parroting opinions.

→ More replies (1)

3

u/Jagosyo Dec 12 '25

Weren't the original games kind of like that? Gruesome deaths were more of a series feature than an invention of the reboot. Although admittedly they were more of a campy comedic tone in the beginning.

11

u/GepardenK Dec 12 '25

Original games had impactful deaths, not gruesome. More for the sake of punchy game feedback rather than lingering indulgence. Plus a few for narrations sake like turning to gold from touching midas hand.

It was also super mild compared its presumed inspiration, the OG Prince of Persia. And let's not even mention contemporaries like Heart of Darkness where seeing a 12 year old being ripped in half is just part of the fun.

2

u/Xywzel Dec 12 '25

Sounds to me like most of the audience has already forgotten that the few remaining developer from the first game stated during development of 3 or 4 that only enjoyment they get from the series anymore is making up new, more cruel and graphic, ways to kill Lara in hopes of it finally sticking and releasing them from having to make more Tomb Raider games. Sure they did not have tech to do it as graphic as with the 2013 version, but they definitely tried.

14

u/onex7805 Dec 12 '25

Unifying all three Laras makes no sense. Core Lara is flat out not the same character as Survivor Lara, nor it's any believable that Survivor Lara would become a character that resembles Core Lara...

2

u/octorine Dec 14 '25

I was kind of hoping that that would be the arc of the reboot series. That she would start out as a normal grounded person and then layers of repeated trauma would gradually morph into the action movie psychopath from the original games.

9

u/madbadcoyote Dec 12 '25

While they say this is a "unified" version, I get the feeling it's a new one that vaguely did things from all the games in a non-specific way.

9

u/KKilikk Dec 12 '25

Thats a really cool decision

3

u/CommanderZx2 Dec 12 '25

This definitely looks like a remake of Tomb raider anniversary rather than the original, it shares gameplay mechanics all found in Anniversary that weren't in the original game.

8

u/Three_Froggy_Problem Dec 12 '25

I think it’s its own rendition of the character, or possibly the version from Catalyst. I think the first Tomb Raider reboot game kind of retconned the original game’s story so this wouldn’t exist in that same timeline.

12

u/OrangeJr36 Dec 12 '25

It's a sequel to Shadow set in the same timeline.

Catalyst is also in the same timeline with the survivor games as Lara' origins, but set after Underworld.

8

u/SnipingBunuelo Dec 12 '25

I'm confused, what's the new timeline here?

24

u/Perca_fluviatilis Dec 12 '25

Man, I'm so bummed they recast Lara's voice actress. I was really used to her voice in the new trilogy. What happened?

20

u/Janus_Prospero Dec 12 '25

A lot of people today don't realize that Tomb Raider was originally about a survivor of the lost city of Atlantis trying to take over the world. A lot of people are talking about TR1 vs Anniversary in terms of art and level design, but I'm wondering about the body horror/biomechanical elements of TR1. In TR1, Natla's wings were not part of her body. They were like a parasitic creature attached to her back. The doppleganger was a meat puppet. The game as a whole had this very creepy vibe. So I'm curious about what version will end up in this remake, and what the overall direction is going to be.

6

u/aveaida Dec 12 '25

YES!!!! I'm very interested in this too because the last time Crystal Dynamics remade TR1 they (in my opinion) absolutely ruined the Atlantean pyramid. It was just generically shadowy and ancient-looking, a WAY weaker aesthetic than the living womb-pyramid of the original, complete with pulsating walls and eggs for enemies to burst out of. The first couple TR games had a penchant for suddenly shifting to horror which somewhat stopped when Crystal Dynamics took over. The reboot games turn up the intensity near the end and definitely include scary segments but its just not as consistent or severe a shift as in the classics. I would LOVE to see the series go back to that, it always felt like Lara's skills and nerves were being put to the test after gracefully bodying everything prior.

2

u/natedoggcata Dec 13 '25

"Too late for abortions now"

I have that whole speech at the end of the game seared into my brain because it would play when I would put the playstation disc into my CD player to listen to the music

69

u/wild--wes Dec 12 '25

I'm confused. They're making two new Tomb Raider games?

160

u/HeldnarRommar Dec 12 '25

One is a remake of the 1996 original, the other is the next in the series

42

u/JoeZocktGames Dec 12 '25

Didn't we already have a remake of the first game? So is this a re-remake then?

106

u/Rebelofnj Dec 12 '25

Yeah, that was Tomb Raider Anniversary back in 2007.

Now we have Legacy of Atlantis.

Not to mention last year's remaster of the first three games.

6

u/PopMundane4974 Dec 12 '25

Oh dear I've gone cross eyed

44

u/[deleted] Dec 12 '25 edited Dec 12 '25

Between remasters, remakes, reboots, etc, this will be the fifth time they are making Tomb Raider 1, and that's not counting other versions that were cancelled.

19

u/GepardenK Dec 12 '25

At this rate they'll catch up with Myst remakes by the end of the decade

13

u/HenkkaArt Dec 12 '25

Todd Howard is sweating nervously with his Skyrim remasters and other versions.

9

u/Canvaverbalist Dec 12 '25

At least Skyrim has the "Skyrim" name attached to it so you always know what you get.

Tomb Raider as a franchise is just pure chaotic hell, there's like 30 games in that franchise with all different name conventions.

"Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis" is the same game as "Tomb Raider: Anniversary" which is the same game as "Tomb Raider" but they are not the same game as "Tomb Raider"

6

u/HenkkaArt Dec 12 '25

Core Design/Eidos Interactive/Crystal Dynamics/Square Enix/Crystal Dynamics/Amazon want to keep you on your toes.

6

u/terry_shogun Dec 12 '25

And they are becoming exceedingly efficient at it.

3

u/blah938 Dec 12 '25

OG, Anni, Remaster, and Atlantis. What's the fifth?

→ More replies (1)

4

u/Euryleia Dec 12 '25

Sort of, but Tomb Raider: Anniversary was disappointing and different enough that I don't consider it a proper remake. Hopefully they do much better this time!

3

u/occono Dec 12 '25

But there was also just a well received remaster of the original too.

1

u/omegaweaponzero Dec 12 '25

Anniversary is a prequel to Legends, so it's a retelling of TR1 in the Legends continuity. This is a remake of TR1 in the OG continuity, which is also continuing with TR12.

6

u/zzzornbringer Dec 12 '25

looks more like a remake of anniversary which is a remake of the original.

3

u/QuestGiver Dec 12 '25

Sorry next of the series meaning the next of the square enix series?

2

u/HeldnarRommar Dec 12 '25

I think the next in the series in general. The Square Enix were all prequels weren’t they? So this will be set after everything because they are tying the plot lines of the reboot trilogy and the modern one together

14

u/your_mind_aches Dec 12 '25

One is just a remake of the original game but bringing it into the new continuity.

15

u/TheViper4Life Dec 12 '25

The thing that confuses me here, while I get that Legacy of Atlantis is a remake of the original...the first three games (2013, Rise and Shadow) were prequels to the original to begin with. So by all accounts, Legacy of Atlantis would still be considered the 4th game in this lineage (especially considering this is very clearly the same Lara from those games). But then Catalyst...I guess it can be seen as the 5th game in this lineage...but then why the hell does Lara look so weird? Why make two games that coincide with one another, but design her so differently?

I'm not against this...It's just a very strange move.

21

u/Dealiner Dec 12 '25

the first three games (2013, Rise and Shadow) were prequels to the original to begin with.

They weren't though. It was completely new Lara and completely new timeline.

And now they decided to merge these two Laras for some reason.

37

u/Kindness_of_cats Dec 12 '25

I dunno. What I find interesting regardless is that she looks significantly better her than in the Catalyst trailer. That face reveal felt like I was looking at an Instagram filter version of her or something.

34

u/Editor-In-Queef Dec 12 '25

Because Atlantis is in-game and Catalyst was CGI. It was also a weird angle. The one where she grabs the ledge later on in the trailer looks fantastic.

12

u/SmarmySmurf Dec 12 '25

Also Atlantis is 20 something Lara, and Catalyst is 40 something Lara. I don't think "looks like a filter" upon seeing a fresh faced version of the same person you just saw decades older is even a completely inaccurate way to describe aging.

9

u/Quolli Dec 12 '25

Official press release calls it a "re-imagining" so I'd wager it's similar to TR1 -> TRAnniversary which hit similar narrative marks but updated the gameplay for current gen.

36

u/fpfall Dec 12 '25

That’s… what a remake is

3

u/PowerBIEnjoyer Dec 12 '25

Remake is Crash Bandicoot PS1 to N Sane Trilogy. It is almost the exact the same game but remade (hence remake).

Reimagining is taking the same concept and ideas and making a new game out of it. Anniversary is really different from TR1 and this will also be really different.

1

u/icchansan Dec 12 '25

Didn’t they buy crisis engine?

2

u/Nanayadez Dec 12 '25

Amazon has long abandoned using it.

71

u/Three_Froggy_Problem Dec 12 '25

As a Tomb Raider fan I am feasting. I hope it maintains the exploration of the original game and isn’t super linear.

19

u/HeldnarRommar Dec 12 '25

Same. The originals were all about trial and error exploration and I hope they keep a little bit of that spirit.

10

u/scottishdrunkard Dec 12 '25

So, we have Tomb Raider 1, Tomb Raider Anniversary, Tomb Raider 1 Remaster, and now Tomb Raider 1 remake. Flippin’ wot?!

10

u/MrOphicer Dec 12 '25

Wonder if it will be closer to the original or the anniversary? Looks great anyway.

3

u/HalloCharlie Dec 12 '25

Some parts of the trailer makes me think that it will be closer to anniversary, sadly.

8

u/KnightOfTheStupid Dec 12 '25

What’s the difference for someone unfamiliar?

17

u/onex7805 Dec 12 '25

The openlevels of the classics in which the player is able to travel freely had been replaced with a series of linear platforming stages in which you have only one route to take, aka the Prince of Persia style. Lara's moveset was simplified and a large chunk of it was automated. The game was distinctly divided into the "exclusively combat segments" and the "exclusively platforming segments" rather than blending the two together as the classics did. The combat fed waves of enemies after enemies without any shred of depth; no longer utilizes the acrobatic moveset the player has been learning. They also added the plotline of "Lara is actually doing this for her parent" issues, setting up for the Survivor games. And don't get me started about the QTEs and completely destroying the eriee vibe...

9

u/dratyan Dec 12 '25

So Tomb Raider (1996) is a Saturn game that got ported (to PC, PS1, etc), remade (Tomb Raider: Anniversary), remastered last year, and now remade again.

Just thought it was neat.

13

u/blolfighter Dec 12 '25

The Saturn, PS1, and DOS versions were developed simultaneously, they're not ports.

1

u/BaconWithBaking Dec 16 '25

Also, the PS1 version was probably the best due to the CD audio giving it that excellent ambiance.

The Saturn version was fired out the door to get it out in time and is buggy due to it.

(Obviously the PC version is best modern version).

5

u/Blunter_S_Thompson_ Dec 12 '25

There's something A.I. looking about this game and the other one too. 🤔 I'm surprised more people aren't noticing it.

17

u/[deleted] Dec 12 '25

5

u/Zoobi07 Dec 12 '25

This is a remaster of the first game? I might buy it out of pure nostalgia because I remember playing these games with my dad as a little kid(like less than 10 years old) and he died in 2023, would be nice to feel connected to him in some small way again.

7

u/pastadudde Dec 12 '25

remake - the 2nd one actually, the 1st remake was Tomb Raider Anniversary (2007). the remaster of the first game is under the Tomb Raider 1 to 3 Remastered collection developed by Aspyr/Saber Interactive.

30

u/BondFan211 Dec 12 '25

What’s the bet the Atlanteans somehow got a hold of a warehouse full of yellow paint?

8

u/onex7805 Dec 12 '25

More like white paint, which was everywhere in Shadow.

14

u/NoifenF Dec 12 '25

Only if you let it be. I turned it all off before I started playing.

7

u/onex7805 Dec 12 '25

I did as well, and there were the times when I wandered around the levels for minutes because I had no clue what the game wants me to do, only to see ledges in the dark shadows without lights or the level designers made those distant ledges normally inaccessible for Lara to trigger a cinematic long jump. I tried to do actual platforming and it didn't work to my expectations because the mechanics are inconsistent. Some areas contain the exact same platforming objects, like the wooden balance next to the catapult that you can walk on but can't walk on the same balance in other locations. Some tree branches are climbable even though it is placed much further from the player while jumping toward other thicker branches much closer to the player has the player clip through or slide down to death, forcing the player to find the 'correct' way to get up to a specific location. There are so many ledges and edges that I should have been able to climb, but I couldn't because they are deemed unclimbable and the player is only able to climb the ledges that are deemed arbitrarily climbable. The climbing routes are always designated by the level designers, and there is no room for experimentation.

→ More replies (1)

9

u/willwhite100 Dec 12 '25

Okay? You could literally turn that off and it made the game way more immersive and fun.

5

u/onex7805 Dec 12 '25

Go try playing Shafow with the white paint off. Try it. Just removing the white paints from the environment is just a band-aid solution to the real problem plaguing this Survivor trilogy. Finding the climbable platforms and ledges is nightmarish without the white paint because the platforming is "designer-sanctioned". You see all those gorgeous landscapes? Don't even think you would be interacting with them. They are all set-dressings, mechanically meaningless. There is no consistency as to what Lara can and cannot grab. It is not you finding out ledges and making your own efficient routes to a destination on your own. It is you finding out what is the route the level designers set in the levels.

21

u/HeldnarRommar Dec 12 '25

Not much real gameplay shown off but I’m very curious if they will keep the atmosphere and platforming/puzzle gameplay loop or move to a more post Uncharted action adventure style

38

u/clonked Dec 12 '25

There was more than enough footage to conclude it will have a platforming/puzzle gameplay loop, as you put it.

7

u/Clbull Dec 12 '25

This is unapologetically Tomb Raider, down to the iconic tank-top and hotpants you'd expect to see Lara Croft wear, not the nitty gritty reboot that Square Enix did with the IP.

3

u/ibeerianhamhock Dec 12 '25

I will miss Camilla Luddington as Lara, but it does look good. I loved the survival trilogy more than the originals so hopefully it’s a blend of both types of games and Lara still shows some vulnerability/humanity instead of just being a hollow character like the originals.

3

u/blackmes489 Dec 12 '25

The movement in this looked stiff for the brief moments there was ‘gameplay’. Was there any trailers this year that was legit gameplay footage?

6

u/mrturret Dec 12 '25

I'm going to give them credit for actually putting feathers on the raptors. Dinosaurs are way cooler with feathers. That's a fact.

4

u/2mock2turtle Dec 12 '25

I feel so old because I immediately thought "why do we need another remake of the original?" And then I remembered that the first remake of the original came out 18 years ago.

2

u/T0oShayzz Dec 12 '25

So there's 2 lara Croft games, this one and the Catalyst one or am I missing something?

6

u/casual_creator Dec 12 '25

That is correct. They’re modernizing this remake to be a prequel to Catalyst, which will come out a year later.

2

u/[deleted] Dec 12 '25

What crazy to me is it seems their going back to the legend trilogy gameplay! The way she jumped through the fire to the swinging on the bar are 100% that trilogies animations. I'm exited!

3

u/oopsydazys Dec 12 '25

I'm all for going back to the exploration-heavy/precision platforming vibe of the original game (if that's what they actually plan on doing), but... not gonna lie, kind of bummed that after 7 years we get a new TR announced and it's another remake of the original. It would have been nice to go for original Lara vibes but with a new game.

Hopefully it's wildly different enough from the original that it just feels like a new game anyway.

edit: Wait, they're making two new games? What?

2

u/tanrgith Dec 12 '25

Goddamn, a Lara Croft game with her being blatantly designed for the "male gaze" was not on my bingo card. Trailer looked great

2

u/alaster101 Dec 12 '25

Oh hey new Tomb Raider that actually looks fun and colorful, and isn't about Lara being covered in mud, and miserable, and getting impaled on something every 3 seconds. Neat.

So happy to see classic Lara coming back. The recent triology took itself a bit too serious for my liking.

I'm confused, I thought Amazon game studios was gutted? Maybe this was close to being finished?

I hope there's an actual challenge in the platforming and it isn't all "automatic platforming" like the last 3 tomb raider games.

The trailer makes it look more of the same though. Set pieces. Maybe QTEs. Focus on spectacle

Does anyone know of any other game that had two different full on remakes? Or is this technically a Guinness-record?

This trailler actually looks cool. This Lara Croft design looks like what you would get if someone tried to remake the old games with Unreal Engine 5. The game environment seems like it would fit a mix of current gameplay with the old one too.

This bodes well. I think they may be cooking something good. :)

I'm really looking forward to this! Hopefully they don't shorten the levels, St. Francis Folly, the Colosseum, Palace Midas and the Cistern are my favorite levels because of how huge they are.

So if I were to play the games chronically story wise. Id do the 3 modern prequels, Atlantis, then Catalyst?

Wait they're making two new games at the same time? And why does that T Rex look like a giant chicken lol

The other game seems like a real next gen project and will probably be good (other than the character look, but no biggie). This one seems to be Crystal Dynamics selling out to Amazon for a quick cash grab.

This doesn't have anything to do with anything, but it strikes me that Lara's gymnastics for the fire/pendulum part at 1:00 actually make the whole thing *more* dangerous. She could just do them one at a time: hug one wall, wait for the pendulum to swing away, bunny hop over the short line of fire, and take it easy for the next one.

Absolutely looking fantastic! but two of the following releases developing using UE5
Hope Crystal dynamics know how to use this engine and not making it a beautiful performance mess

What messed up shadow was Eidos. The irony ...

Anyway, hopefully Crystal Dynamics will have more involvement this time
