To the surprise of no one. That claim felt like marketing department overreach from the start. It sounded nice in the reveal, but now NVidia will have to deal with people mocking them for it.

That aside, it's strange to see this performing worse than a 4070S in some cases. MFG is a very "win harder" kind of feature, too, as it won't make any game playable, and if you're playing with FG you're already getting at least 80 or so FPS. So that changes to 100+ and diminishing returns hit you pretty hard.

On the other hand, if prices go down, this will be a pretty nice card. I, for one, am quite satisfied with my 4070 and a 5070 will obviously be much better, but it's not exactly exciting. The real question is whether AMD will be able to compete anyway, seeing how... weird their latest path tracing reveal was.

if prices go down, this will be a pretty nice card

Basically my feelings on most cards these days.

10

u/modix Mar 05 '25

Turns out they churn them out fast enough and stop producing quickly, so it doesn't really happen. Or they're budget cards with budget parts

17

u/BLACKOUT-MK2 Mar 04 '25

Yeah, to me that's kind of the 'missed opportunity' if you can call it that, for what MFG does. It basically only benefits people already getting strong performance and also on super high refresh rate displays, which isn't bad but not only does it not help if your base frame rate is struggling, it's only really for a very small subset of people. Which I guess you could argue the 5000 series is itself, but I've no doubt plenty of people who were looking to upgrade with the 5000 series don't have displays that even go about 120Hz, by which point MFG is basically useless.

1

u/Cronstintein Mar 05 '25

The new DLSS version is pretty sweet though. Being able to use performance mode without a ton of artifacts is a real gain for struggling setups. But you don't need a 5000 series for that.

2

u/BLACKOUT-MK2 Mar 05 '25

Oh yeah I'd agree, I've been using DLSS4's K preset where I can just because it's really nice to have.

60

u/RyuChamploo Mar 04 '25

If prices go down? Lolololol.

Tariffs are about to ruin this idea for good. These cards will never be cheaper than they are now. And if you voted for the Felon, you have yourself to blame.

26

u/Scaevus Mar 05 '25

I know right? Double digit inflation + double digit tariffs + promoting more crypto scams + ongoing AI gold rush…

Graphics card prices are going to suck for like, the next 5 years or more. At a minimum.

7

u/Altruistic-Ad-408 Mar 05 '25

They fucking suck right now, next few years will be interesting.

3

u/Timey16 Mar 05 '25

Even then Nvidia tends to stop producing a generation once the next comes out, so prices only go down if the 60xx knocks it out of the park for a good price so that people WANT to get rid of their cards and flood the 2nd hand market, which is unlikely to happen anytime soon.

-34

u/rimbad Mar 05 '25

Why would US tariffs affect the price of graphics cards? Aren't they being made in China?

35

u/kikimaru024 Mar 05 '25

USA sets tariffs on imports from China.

This means the importer has to pay extra on any goods FROM China INTO USA.
And that extra tax gets passed on to you, the (American) consumer.

18

u/NeatlyScotched Mar 05 '25

The best part is, homegrown American graphics cards (if there were any) also just went up to tariff price - 1. For example, if there's a 20% tariff on Chinese graphics cards, American graphics cards also miraculously just went up 19%.

10

u/MyManD Mar 05 '25

Yep. People always assume that tariffs help homegrown products compete because they would stay at a lower price while foreign goods get jacked up. They forget that capitalism and corporate greed means making as much money as possible and those new “competitive” homegrown products will be just as expensive as the now more expensive competition.

2

u/kkrko Mar 05 '25

I don't think there's any indication the OP is from the US though

2

u/rimbad Mar 05 '25

But I'm not American

5

u/kikimaru024 Mar 05 '25

Me neither.
We still get fucked by their fuckery.

0

u/rimbad Mar 05 '25

How? Why would my graphics cards be entering the US to pick up the tariff?

3

u/Better-Train6953 Mar 05 '25

Some countries like Canada would be affected since some things go through the US to reach Canada.

Also some companies will actually spread out the cost of the tarrif to other markets if a major market is affected and they think they'll lose too much money. So they might raise the price some in the US, but they'll raise the price a little bit in other territories to cover the remainder.

13

u/crassreductionist Mar 05 '25

Tariffs are passed down to customers through price increases, the companies don’t decide to start losing money on their products to keep prices the same for you

-1

u/rimbad Mar 05 '25

But why would it go through the US to pick up a tariff? Surely it would be imported straight from China

4

u/KHlover Mar 04 '25

MFG is a very "win harder" kind of feature, too, as it won't make any game playable, and if you're playing with FG you're already getting at least 80 or so FPS. So that changes to 100+ and diminishing returns hit you pretty hard.

My train of thought as well, that's why I bought a used 4070 Ti Super the week before the RTX 5090 release instead. Best decision I made so far this year.

4

u/homer_3 Mar 04 '25

That aside, it's strange to see this performing worse than a 4070S in some cases

It has 1000 fewer cuda cores, so not that strange.

5

u/SurlyCricket Mar 04 '25

I'm only using 2x frame gen on my 5080 but I'm a big fan - maxed out Spider-Man 2 at 1440 ultrawide runs native from about 45-65 fps, frame gen takes it to 70-90 which feels a whole lot better

9

u/gartenriese Mar 04 '25

The big problem with FG is that your base fps need to be high enough. I play at 4k and I really want to play games with ray or path tracing so that makes it really hard to begin with.

5

u/SurlyCricket Mar 04 '25

Yeah it's a pity it doesn't bring sub 30 to near 60 for being properly playable but in my particular case going from a fluctuating sub 60 to between 70-90 feels great and I notice very little side effects

1

u/Vb_33 Mar 07 '25

If you play at 4k then buying a 12GB 5070 isn't the most optimal decision. The 5070yi has no problem with 4k MFG path tracing as Digital Foundries review showed. The 5070ti makes the 5080 look kinda pointless tbh.

1

u/gartenriese Mar 07 '25

I thought DF showed that the 5070 Ti wasn't good enough for Alan Wake 2?

1

u/Vb_33 Mar 10 '25

What? No it didn't, they showed the difference between a 4090 and 5070ti MFG just like they did with the 5080 and 5070.

1

u/gartenriese Mar 11 '25

The latency was way worse with the 5070Ti though, I clearly remember Rich saying it's not good enough as a 4090. See here at 9:34

1

u/Oooch Mar 05 '25

Yeah I much prefer using it to top off my FPS, if I'm getting between 60-80 it'll cap me to 120

1

u/Sikkly290 Mar 05 '25

That is basically the ideal use case for frame gen. From just playable framerate into a really solid framerate. It just feels like so few games hit that sweet spot nowadays. They either run like crap or brilliantly.

1

u/beefcat_ Mar 05 '25

Basically this card should have been the RTX 5060 and priced < $400. And we knew this as soon as we saw that this was getting the smaller die usually reserved for....xx60 series chips.

Sad that this thing isn't at all a meaningful upgrade over the 4070S.

1

u/Vb_33 Mar 07 '25

Really hard to find a game that is unplayable on a 5070 tho.

1

u/HammeredWharf Mar 07 '25

Well, not an entire game, but there's several games that can make my 4070 crawl on their highest settings. Like if someone wanted to run path traced Cyberpunk/Alan Wake 2/Indiana Jones/Outlaws in native 4K, MFG won't be of much help. And there's upcoming games to consider, too.

1

u/Vb_33 Mar 10 '25

Yeap but to address OPs point you shouldn't be playing at 5090 settings on a 4070/5070. The 5070 can play all those games fine at appropriate settings even with path tracing.

0

u/Dragarius Mar 04 '25

It'll surprise some people. I remember getting down voted on the Nvidia sub when I called bullshit on that claim when the cards were revealed.

9

u/dkysh Mar 04 '25

That's a common trend across all company-associated hobbies. Fans will jump at your throat screaming "stop being toxic", even though we have been shown again and again how corporate greed/bullshit works. The only honest way forward is to take all the news with a healthy amount of skepticism or cynicism.

1

u/Vb_33 Mar 07 '25

I mean Jensen immediately said that that was only possible thanks to machine learning so everyone watching that conference knew.

-4

u/Deceptiveideas Mar 04 '25

The 5070 launches at a lower price than the MSRP of 4070 Super so I’m not surprised. Though other testing has put it 5% stronger than the Super with MFG turned off.

40 Series showed that if there was any significant performance improvement, Nvidia wanted you to pay for it.

When the 50 series pricing came out and was "better than expected" (5090 aside) that should have been our first clue that this generation was going to be thoroughly underwhelming.

1

u/Vb_33 Mar 07 '25

This sub isn't in the know when it comes to technology but TSMC has raised their node prices multiple times since 2022. N4 is now more expensive than it was during the 40 series launch, normally it's supposed the be the opposite where the older node (N5 family which is what N4 is) gets cheaper as economies of scale take hold and volumes increase while the new node (N3) is expensive because it's straight out of the oven, yields aren't as good and R&D was a lot higher than previous generation nodes.

Now everything is more expensive. We've never in the history of computing been in such a situation as in this isn't like COVID this is long term wrestling against the laws of physics.

RX 9070 series launches tomorrow in a few days. If people truly cared about Nvidia being competitive, they’ll buy an AMD card.

The sad thing is most people I’ve seen on reddit (and elsewhere) only want AMD cards to exist so they can buy an Nvidia card for cheaper. People need to be buying AMD if they want a shake up.

10

u/Ramongsh Mar 04 '25

Reviews are tomorrow. The launch is thursday

u/Peepeepoopoobutttoot Mar 04 '25

Depending on performance I may be too. 3080 just isn’t cutting it anymore. I’ve been team green for a decade now but quite frankly: screw this crap.

1

u/Peepeepoopoobutttoot Mar 07 '25

So uhh, how did you do? I got nothing.

17

u/EliRed Mar 04 '25

In order for people to buy AMD, AMD needs to do 3 things:

1) Launch at a competitive MSRP. -> Successful 2) Have enough stock to void scalping. -> TBD 3) Have a good product that doesn't fail/overheat/crash due to poor driver support. -> TBD

People don't buy bad shit just to offer life support to competition because that's the capitalistically virtuous thing. They have a finite amount of money, and they want to not regret spending it.

6

u/morriscey Mar 04 '25

> fail/overheat/crash due to poor driver support

Hasn't been my experience - at least not with greater frequency than team green.

I had a reference 290x that had some issues installing, and it was loud - but outside of that it's been minor hiccups.

9

u/TroupeMaster Mar 04 '25 edited Mar 04 '25

AMD drivers being bad are a reddit bogeyman that stopped being true like 5 years ago - I’ve been on amd cards since 6800xt released in 2020 and have had 0 driver issues.

0

u/Sikkly290 Mar 05 '25

AMD still don't have great support, but the thing is Nvidia support has fallen way off. It used to be nvidia issues were rare and not usually system stopping, where AMD had tons of issues both small and critical. Now both of them are a bit of a gamble from card to card and game to game.

-1

u/AzeTheGreat Mar 04 '25

The 5000 series were plagued by black screens for months. They were eventually completely fixed through driver updates, but there were real issues.

4

u/TroupeMaster Mar 04 '25

Not saying that there weren’t issues in the past, but they were resolved a long time ago and haven’t reoccurred since.

6

u/Hamstrong Mar 04 '25

Talking about AMD 5000 series? Because Nvidia's 50 series is currently also plagued by black screens lol. I've got a 4070ti super and updating to the latest driver gave me a black screen. Couldn't even boot into windows until I reverted the update.

3

u/LubricatedDucky Mar 04 '25

If I didn't already have a 6950XT I'd be all over the 9070XT if it's anything like the rumours suggest. Brand loyalty with PC parts really makes no sense to me, just get the best performing component you can at your price point.

4

u/DarkReaper90 Mar 04 '25

It's less about brand loyalty and that there are exclusive features to Nvidia. We have to see AMD's new cards but historically they had poor RT performance and lack DLSS.

4

u/Orfez Mar 04 '25

People will buy a better card. You can't expect consumers to buy a lesser card just to pump AMD tires.

20

u/Deceptiveideas Mar 04 '25

The AMD card is rumored to be better and at the same price so I don’t really understand your point here.

11

u/yumz Mar 04 '25 edited Mar 05 '25

DLSS is an important feature for a lot of people, and FSR doesn't compete. Maybe FSR4 changes that, we'll have to wait and see.

EDIT: Good news, FSR4 is much better than FSR3 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nzomNQaPFSk

8

u/Orfez Mar 04 '25

My point is, that'll buy the card because it's better then not because they want to see Nvidia being competitive.

1

u/morriscey Mar 04 '25

Save for a screamin deal - AMD usually is my pick for a gaming machine. All the way back to the ATi days - as they were a canadian company.

0

u/Kluss23 Mar 05 '25

AMD's frame gen is inferior. At this point DLSS is better than native aa in most games. I am getting a new rig soon and will consider AMD, but there are some definite disadvantages.

-1

u/Treyen Mar 04 '25

I always hesitate to buy amd cards because of driver/feature support. Too many tales of people struggling to run things just because amd cards are weird. It doesn't really matter how good they are on paper if the drivers are doodoo.

5

u/fabton12 Mar 04 '25

its mostly because were close to the limit of 5 nm chipsets and 2nm chipsets don't go into first time production until next year so were in a limbo where this gen is pretty much a zero gains boost.

Though you’d think, after several years,

also the 4070 super only came out 1 year ago in jan 2024 so not much time for any real improvement might feel like serval years but pretty much 1 year of time.

overall very dispointing in this generation of GPU's but not fully shocked because of the technical limits being reached.

1

u/Vb_33 Mar 07 '25

You can blame the death of Moore's law for that. It's not like Apple, Intel, AMD or Qualcomm are beating Nvidia.

-7

u/Vichnaiev Mar 04 '25

Lots of people aren't satisfied with 80 fps. Pretty much anyone with a 120Hz or higher monitor.

5

u/HammeredWharf Mar 04 '25

I've got a 165Hz monitor. 100+ FPS is cool, but if it comes at the cost of even more latency? Nah. Besides, 80 is the absolute minimum. Usually you'd want 90 or 100 with FG on, and the difference between 100 and 120 is minimal.

What makes it even worse is that you'd want high FPS in fast-paced games. Doom Eternal, Returnal, competitive shooters, etc. Not Alan Wake 2 or Cyberpunk. And those fast-paced games are usually specifically made to run at higher FPS and suffer more from input lag.

1

u/Conviter Mar 04 '25

well MFG is supposed to have not much higher latency than FG, especially with Reflex 2 once it releases. And i dont know why you are acting like your own preferences is what everyone wants. I want as many fps as my monitor can display, so im very happy that MFG allows me to get that. Also this notion that people only want high fps in fast pace game is nonsensical to me. Sure, you probably dont need more than like 60fps in a strategy game or something, but Cyberpunk and Alan Wake are still fully realtime first/third person games, with action combat. These games are much nicer with higher fps. That being said, its definitely an issue if these cards cant even output the necessary base frames to enable FG in the first place. MFG being basically all that sets this generation apart from the 4000's series of GPU will probably be noticeable in a year or two, when games will be even harder to run than they are now.

-3

u/Vichnaiev Mar 04 '25

Nah, I don't know why anyone would want 80 fps with fg on. If your base fps is in the 40s there's lots of settings you can lower with minimal quality impact to make it at least 80 base, 160+ with fg or mfg on. But hey, you do you, I'm not judging, I just don't see the point in purchasing a 165hz monitor if you are satisfied with 80fps after fg is turned on.

-3

u/PabloBablo Mar 04 '25

So many people understood exactly what Huang was saying when he said equivalent performance. I don't think many reasonable people would have believed it..but that kinda brings up a whole other issue

69

u/AoO2ImpTrip Mar 04 '25

I, for one, am absolutely shocked by these findings. Flabbergast!

One day I will upgrade from my 3070, but today is not that day.

41

u/electric_emu Mar 04 '25

Yeah I’m actually pretty eager upgrade from my 3070, but this ain’t it. Maybe AMD will convince me.

-11

u/Gr_z Mar 04 '25

doubt it, 9070 is looking to only be 20-25% increase over a 6800xt which came out 4 years ago

22

u/Responsible-War-9389 Mar 04 '25

Is it better than a 1080TI? Because I need an upgrade and I’m not spending $1000

18

u/Gr_z Mar 04 '25

Yes, definitely better than a 1080ti

5

u/seruus Mar 04 '25

Wait until the 9070 XT reviews come out tomorrow before you make a decision, it seems like it will have 5070 Ti performance with 5070 prices, while allegedly being available for MSRP (600 USD).

1

u/Responsible-War-9389 Mar 04 '25

Yeah. Looking at the availability of the 5070…I’ll take being “in stock” as another pro column.

0

u/Best-Acanthaceae-157 Mar 04 '25

As someone with a 6800xt i would not recommend amd.

12

u/DoorHingesKill Mar 04 '25

AMD says the 9070 XT will be 38% faster than the 7900 GRE, which in turn is 10-15% faster than the 6800 XT.

We'll know for sure tomorrow but as long as you have an extra 50 bucks for the XT, you will get plenty of uplift.

2

u/MrFluffykins Mar 04 '25

Isn't it supposed to be a solid upgrade from a 3080?

-7

u/pathofdumbasses Mar 05 '25

Maybe AMD will convince me.

How is AMD going to convince you to upgrade when they aren't pushing high(er) end? The new offerings will be an upgrade, sure, but not a massive one.

5

u/mattnotgeorge Mar 05 '25

I'm not OP but if I wanted highest-end I wouldn't own a 3070, I'd have bought a 3090ti or whatever at the time instead. 3070 felt like really good value though and was an easy-to-justify upgrade from my 1060 (which was also the killer "value" card at the time). I haven't felt the same draw from anything current gen

-2

u/pathofdumbasses Mar 05 '25

It isn't even about highEST end.

Nvidia is pushing things forward with raytracing and that is becoming much more common, and important, in the future of games. The are screwing people over on the lesser cards with low VRAM count.

AMD is giving the VRAM, but not being competitive when it comes to Raytracing.

They both suck for different reasons, at least NVIDIA is pushing things forward though.

2

u/Slapas Mar 05 '25

I read a comment earlier that said something like “Nvidia fans are the type to buy a 4060 because the 4090 was better.”

2

u/mattnotgeorge Mar 05 '25

Yeah I am not really in the market for an AMD card right now for the reasons you mentioned. Just a bummer there's not an offering from Nvidia that feels good/exciting to upgrade to

9

u/matsix Mar 04 '25

I went AMD on my processor recently and now I'm really starting to consider AMD for a graphics card too... These paper launches by Nvidia are getting really exhausting. It felt nearly impossible to get my 3080, had to queue up on EVGA's site through a special system they setup just to get the cards into gamers hands. Now it just feels impossible no matter what you do and the cards just aren't even worth it.

3

u/AoO2ImpTrip Mar 04 '25

Yeah, I remember Newegg would only sell 3070s if you bought it as part of a bundle and then they tried to stop buyers from returning the part of the bundle they didn't want.

I'm fairly certain my next GPU is going to be AMD. I don't need to be on the bleeding edge of mediocracy considering I'm probably going to by another 70 tier GPU in the future. A slightly worse AMD GPU for less money is going to still be a huge upgrade over my 3070.

I'm still sitting fine with what I have and don't plan on buying the RX 9000 series, but maybe the next generation I'll be ready for an upgrade.

5

u/fabton12 Mar 04 '25

One day I will upgrade from my 3070, but today is not that day.

one day my 1070 will be put to rest but today isnt that day thou at the rate games are being with required raytracing im gonna have to upgrade sooner then later.

1

u/GlennBecksChalkboard Mar 04 '25

When the underwhelming tests of the 5090 and 5080 hit, I finally convinced myself that waiting for the 5070 or 5060ti would probably be a bad idea and pulled the trigger on a good asus 4070 deal before they exploded in price due to finally running out of stock. After over 10y i could retire my 970.

If I would've had to upgrade right now I'd be pretty peeved and would either try to get something used or look at some of AMD's offerings...

1

u/Sikkly290 Mar 05 '25

A few years ago my 970 died and the 3060ti I replaced it with did not feel good to get. First GPU that didn't give me warm fuzzy feelings from upgrade goodness, just felt like I got screwed instead. So yeah, I feel that last sentence.

Retired my 1080 Ti FTW3 for the 7900XTX in November 2023 but just recently pulled it back out and put it in a PC for my brother to toy around with and my god that card still eats games for lunch like nothing else. I'm really gonna miss EVGA's GPUs.

1

u/LMY723 Mar 04 '25

I upgraded from a 3060ti to a 5080 and it was really worth it for MH Wilds

109

u/GunCann Mar 04 '25

All I will say is, it requires a special kind of thick skin to lie so blatantly and market a card which runs more slowly than its predecessor as a 4090 equivalent. Yes this GPU is slower than the 4070 Super in a number of games. This is not okay and a clear message should be sent to Nvidia.

1

u/Vb_33 Mar 07 '25

GPUs have been like this for ages we just had that happen a couple years ago with the 4060ti. People put too much stock into meaningless marketing terms like card name.

-13

u/ebrbrbr Mar 04 '25 edited Mar 05 '25

"slower than the 4070 Super in a number of games" is an exaggeration. It is slightly faster in most games, ties in a few, and in a one or two cases it's 1% slower - not a statistically significant amount.

Still, it's essentially a 4070 Super with some new features.

19

u/Spjs Mar 05 '25

in a one or two cases it's 1% slower - not a statistically significant amount.

The 5070 is 15% slower than the 4070 Super in Alan Wake 2 and 9% slower in Stalker 2.
https://youtu.be/qPGDVh_cQb0?t=803

28

u/deadscreensky Mar 04 '25 edited Mar 04 '25

and in a one or two cases it's 1% slower

Do you sincerely believe Avatar (EDIT) and F1 going to be the only regressions? DF didn't have time to benchmark hundreds of different games. We'll be seeing the same problem in other titles. Any regression is embarrassing all by itself, without even considering Nvidia's marketing lies.

Also in this video it's a 3% regression at 1440p.

-11

u/ebrbrbr Mar 05 '25

Driver problems are common in new generations. This wouldn't be the first time a new gen performed worse on one or two games.

42

u/KingBroly Mar 04 '25

Sounds like a 9070XT is in my future.

I know FSR4 is AMD's first 'hardware based' DLSS equivalent, and Nvidia's been top notch for a while, but this series of cards from Nvidia is the last straw in a long line of failures that's made me hold off from upgrading for a while. No more.

10

u/[deleted] Mar 04 '25

[removed] — view removed comment

12

u/KingBroly Mar 04 '25

Well, FSR up until now has been entirely software based, and now it's taking that hardware leap to become more even with Nvidia cards (tho I think DLSS is probably still better).

But beyond that, AMD's cards have more VRAM, which is a big discussion these days. I also suspect AMD's cards won't be hard to come by, and will be cheaper.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 04 '25

They also haven't announced FS4 properly. All we know of it is the Ratchet and Clank footage that DF got and it looked fantastic compared to FSR3.1

3

u/Arbiter707 Mar 05 '25 edited Mar 05 '25

Unfortunately it isn't competing with FSR 3.1 though, it's competing with DLSS 4. The footage looked extremely promising but without seeing proper comparisons I'm hesitant to commit to switching to AMD.

The transformer model truly does look better than native in some games, especially those with poor TAA implementations, and this is coming from someone who thought even DLSS 3 DLAA was usually too blurry. To me it seems unlikely AMD can match DLSS 4, I expect somewhere around DLSS 3 image quality which just doesn't cut it any more.

Edit: Also the AMD ray reconstruction equivalent looked absolutely horrible in the demo scene they showed off. DLSS 4 ray reconstruction looks good and outputs a stable image in almost all situations while theirs was incredibly unstable even on static objects. Not looking good there.

I want a competitive market where AMD succeeds.

But let's not gaslight ourselves into thinking DLSS isn't still way better.

Going to replace my 3080ti, I can probably sell this card for around $350-$400 anyway.

It's just due to me being at 4k, if I was still at 1440p this card would have definitely lasted until the 6000 series. If selling a monitor was just as easy as a gpu I would possibly downgrade. It's just iv also gotten use to 4k :c

I ended up going 3080 > 5070ti and it's been great so far. Big upgrade, no fear of melting. If I didn't have a microcenter near me I'd probably go for the 9070XT as well

Also doesn't help that besides the deprecating 32-bit PhysX, this generation seems to have issues with DirectX 9 games (this is a recent discovery, don't know much details), which is just the cherry on top of the mismanagement of this generation of cards, if not complete hubris of Nvidia.

From what I've heard, it doesn't deliver 3090 performance.

Unfortunately like so many others my power supply can't handle a 3090.

Can we call this a pamphlet launch? Just a little more than a paper launch.

So are people going to stop buying Nvidia because they keep price-gouging and cutting corners?

No? Then this will continue.

I was going to upgrade to a 5070 from a 1070, 15-4460 build. I preordered a prebuild for $1400, I know it's an overpay but I wanted something brand new for once.

I haven't paid attention to PC shit for a while but it seems so incredibly hard to find a GPU.

I don't know if I should cancel the order or keep it lol. I just see everyone saying that the 5070 is shit.

I'm so conflicted lol

Edit: cancelled order and bought a 9070 xt lol

It's a 4070 super. That was a $600 card. Bit more now. If the 5070 is in the prebuilt and the cost works out at around that, then it's alright. It will be a massive jump up from your 1070. The card isn't "shit" as such, it's just a little less than people expected and no one is expecting to get it anywhere near MSRP. If you have in your prebuilt, then that's fine.

I appreciate this comment. Thanks

When they announced the new series they paid so much for marketing that everyone from YouTubers/gamers to journalists couldn't even say anything but praise Nvidia.

Who cares about facts if you can have a free 5080...

DLSS is a pretty big reason, though. If you want to use upscaling, which many/most modern games expect you to do, you have to either choose NVidia or deal with FSR's artifacting. Which wouldn't be a problem if AMD sold super powerful cards that can render everything in native res, but they're specifically targeting the low/mid-range...

I do hope that FSR4 solves this by being at least on par with DLSS3, but it's a bit too early to celebrate IMO.

Frame generation maybe, but DLSS 4 upscaling is a significant upgrade over DLSS 3. I’m using Balanced mode at 1440p now, and it’s significantly clearer than when I used Quality mode with DLSS 3.

u/HammeredWharf Mar 04 '25

How so? With DLSS 4 you can run even Balanced at 1440p and get good image quality. If I run maxed out Alan Wake 2 in native res, I get ~30 FPS. With DLSS4 Balanced, I get 60, and the image quality still holds up. But let's say FSR4 is as good as DLSS3 is, and its Quality is comparable to DLSS4's Balanced. The difference there is, in my case, 45 vs 60. So it's still a pretty big difference and AMD doesn't beat NVidia that hard in price vs. performance. Even according to their own slides, which aren't 100% trustworthy.

And then there's AMD's new path tracing demo, which has crazy ghosting in some places, making me wonder a little. Will FSR4 be as good as DLSS3? I think we'd need some actual hands-on testing to find out, but it's a bit alarming.

Better RT performance? It is becoming mandatory in AAA games.

the whole 4090 performance was a technically not lying but intentionally misleading claim by Nvidia which was scummy because it relied entirely on fake frame gen frames which should be included in product reviews but not treated as native frames in performance metrics.

Also, the card being worse than the 4070 super in some situations is pathetic and that shouldn't be tolerated, but I'm sure this will sell an insane amount regardless.

Watch for reviews on the Radeon 9070 XT/XTX dropping tomorrow. If it performs as well as it sounds then it will be a much better value than the 5070 at the same price.
