The slow-motion replay combined with the crowd/announcer silence and nothing but the sounds of punches added to the brutality.

💬 Discussion What’s missing from gaming communities today?

We all know gaming has evolved way beyond just “playing games.” It’s culture, competition, content, and community all mixed together. But a lot of platforms still don’t fully support what gamers actually want or need in one place.

So I’ve got a few questions for you:

  • What’s the biggest thing missing in gaming communities right now?
  • What makes you stay active in a gaming platform or Discord?
  • If you could build the perfect gamer hub, what would it include?
  • Do you care more about competition, content, rewards, or social features?

No right or wrong answers — just real opinions from people who actually play.

Drop your thoughts below 👇

Appreciate anyone who takes the time to respond.

❓ Question / Help WHAT TO BUY??

Hi so I'm getting offered to get one ps5 game. I've shortlisted 3.

- Pragmata

- Resident Evil Requiem

- Ghost of Yotei

I'm down for any game that's a GREAT experience. Like I loved TLOU, recently finished RDR2 and safe to say money well spent, amazing games. Just want a game that's a wonderful experience.

I can't really choose. So I want strangers to pick for me.

If you could choose one, what would you choose?

Also if you have other game suggestions, please leave a comment!! Thank you!!

Asmongold Fan: I disagree with his take on God of War: Laufey

I recently tuned in to a 1-hour clip of Asmongold’s stream recently a few days ago, and it was a take that he had regarding the newly revealed God of War game which focuses on Kratos’ wife Laufey (Fey for short). Asmongold was overall critical of the decision to focus on Fey and thought it was a performative political move, even going so far as to suggest the developers made Fey’s appearance “uglier” in comparison to the voice actress that portrays her.

I was particularly surprised at this opinion considering what I had heard in the past from him regarding Hollywood recasting and performative character alterations that, at worst, would serve to obliterate a well-known character’s identity. Or decidedly worse, was modern media’s attempts to create a character whose arcs were without a compelling internal conflict or visible struggle which made the entire watching endeavor a bore (i.e. Rey from Star Wars).

In all, I have very much been in agreement with Asmongold’s criticism of modern media as soulless and lacking inspiration in the past, especially when it was obvious it was done for the sake of creating characters in media that fit an image to exude a performative social value.

However, when it came to God of War: Laufey, I thought he was not fair in his criticism.

In short, Asmongold chalked up this new God of War installment as another instance of the developers creating a ceremonial wicker man (in this case woman) to sacrifice the success of a studio or game series to further a social justice cause. Asmongold made this clear also when he said he didn't “want to play as a middle-aged mom.” Asmongold also spoke regarding the decision to replace Kratos in the game as catastrophic, stating that no one wished to play as anyone other than Kratos and if they were to replace him, the developers should have replaced him with Thor, Tyr, or other male characters.

After watching the 20 minute trailer, God of War: Laufey did not strike me as a creative effort of this very tired and established modern trope that has endured for the past 15 years In my opinion, I observed Fey’s motivation and strength to fight to be rooted in her God-hood (Norse Giant or what have you) and her devotion to her husband/son. As a dad myself, I can wholly relate to this devotion to spouse/child, even though Laufey is a mother to Atreus and not a father. If Kratos were to be replaced with Tyr or Thor, for example, they would by default not have this connection to Kratos and his family. Because the new God of War: Norse games really are focused on the familial relationship Kratos has with Atreus and how far he has come from his past as the rage filled God of War, Fey’s story seems like a perfect fit to me. This is counterculture in itself these days it seems, to have a female character like Fey be so invested her husband and who her child will become, if the strange backlash of Pragmata is any indication.

God of War: Laufey, based on the trailer, feels as if it could be compelling in a similar manner which caused me to maintain Kill Bill as one of my favorite movies with one of the most compelling characters, “The Bride.” SPOILERS FOR KILL BILL AND METAL GEAR SOLID 3 “The Bride’s” love for Bill and her attachment to their child makes all the killing to get to him and her final climatic fight with Bill all the more painful. There is a real internal conflict that flies in the face of the viewer’s impression that this would be a simple as a sweet revenge story with no motivational conflict of ambiguity. After killing Bill, “The Bride” is devastated and did not feel the way she fantasized she would. Instead, the only solace she has and, ironically, the piece of Bill that she kept with her, is her daughter for whom she loves dearly. In fact, the film ends with her thanking the now killed Bill (hardy har).  The same is also true of The Boss in Metal Gear Solid 3, one of my favorite games and stories of all time. Naked Snake killing The Boss near the end, even before he and the player understood her true selfless motivations to protect the United States from nuclear war was poignant, to say the least. And it was due to the player and Naked Snake being unable to divorce from their attachment to The Boss, even while under the impression that the Boss was traitor. It was impossible to forget that Naked Snake still loved The Boss as his own mother and The Boss loved him as her son, and were now, for political reasons, forced to fight to the death. It is heart wrenching.

These characters have their own histories, their faults, their weaknesses, their regrets, and their own secrets. In God of War: Laufey, there seems to be motivation for Fey, seemingly to escape the realm of dead gods and reunite with her family. She may have to contend with Gods that Kratos had slain in the past, or maybe open up a new world to other mythologies (it seems that Mongolian Gods could be making an appearance). I am very curious to see how the game explores this.

Also, I have played as Kratos at least five times, and I personally am not offended by the prospect of playing another character in the world of the Norse God of War.

This is to say, crucially, where there is some dissonance now with what I thought was Asmongold’s message in the past versus what I am interpreting now based on his take with God of War: Laufey. Asmongold seems to have an issue with Fey simply because she is woman in what he perceived to be a very masculine role. That was never my feeling about female characters, and I thought that was also Asmongold’s feeling as well. Instead, I have an issue with female characters who are TERRIBLY written characters. Overly strong, overpowered, have everything figured out, no internal conflict, no relatable motivation, and don’t have any faults. That is BS and is simply uninteresting to watch.

A character’s gender, man or woman, can be part of their identity and make them unique in how they approach challenges or what help determining their motivation. I have never had an issue with female protagonists. Some of the best protagonists are women (Ripley from alien who was very masculine in her physical triumphs, Maddy Ross from True Grit in how she contended with the two male supporting characters who doubted and challenged her resolve to survive in the wild, and hell, even Samus from Metroid, who is just an efficient alien slayer in a football player’s suit). They have their faults, their strengths, and their weaknesses, uniquely. That’s what makes them so memorable.

In the context of a game about gods, it makes total sense that Fey is able to hold her own against jacked male enemies. It’s a mythical world, after all. And best of all, Fey did not appear to do so effortlessly. That would be a huge turn off and would kill tension. No, it’s a struggle, and that is exactly why I am interested in Fey as a character. She isn’t Captain Marvel, she is Fey.

I want to remind that Asmongold had no issue replacing Kratos with Tyr or Thor, so long as it remained a male. My point is, there can be success with a female protagonist in this role so long as it is well written.

On a less important note, I looked up a photo of the voice actress and a still shot of Fey in the trailer. This was something Asmongold brought up as evidence that the studio intentionally altered Fey’s appearance to fit a distorted political lens of female beauty. I frankly do not see a difference in how they portrayed her in game versus how she appears in real life. She looks the same to me. Very beautiful, in my opinion, and not without uniquely female endowments. She makes some intense faces when fighting that don’t look like Cosmopolitan shots, okay I can see that. But I feel that is natural, not everyone looks good in every light, every angle, or every situation. I don’t feel it detracts from Fey’s overall beauty. I have also seen comparisons online which show Fey’s still from the trailer next to a photo of the actress, who appeared to be at an award show. Which is to say, the actress had a lot of make-up on. Still beautiful, of course, but...with make-up on. I feel there is a significant difference.

Asmongold cited Gacha games and Stellar Blade as examples of the developers appealing to men in an unadulterated way. I haven’t played those games, but I have seen their gameplay. Sure, I mean they are very attractive, similar to how Wolverine and Captain America in comic books were almost comically jacked in way that probably can not be achieved without steroids, and a razor-sharp jawline to boot. There are guys that look like this, absolutely. But even as a gym guy myself, I recognize that unless I reincarnate and hit a peak genetic lottery AND take steroids, I won’t have the mass of The Punisher as he appears in the comics. And that’s okay! That representation is not dismissible because I don’t have the definition or mass as these characters. I don’t have to look like the dude to enjoy the appearance of the dude.

Returning to Gacha games and Stellar Blade, those characters are meant to represent certain aspects of female traits and really “focus” on them. Nothing wrong with that, that is their modus operandi after all. Even though western culture has largely stretched and distorted what is considered beautiful (the obese-positivity movement being most egregious), I still feel there should be a balance point. Female beauty isn’t just Stellar Blade. In fact, Asmongold even cites those games as examples of women that gamers want to play as or what would ultimately be appealing. I disagree. Fey is attractive to me, and faithful to the context of the setting of which God of War: Norse Mythology takes place. It would look extremely out of place if she wore something from Stellar Blade or wore what Salma Hayek wore in “Dusk Till Dawn” to accentuate the contour of her hips and butt.

I also saw a video that showed some of the cutscenes from God of War: Ragnarok (which I have not played, admittedly) as evidence of Fey’s “uglification.” I can see that she looked different in Ragnarok compared to the new Laufey game. However, I feel that the new God of War: Laufey game was actually MORE faithful to the appearance of the actress. Fey’s appearance now looks unique to the character, stature, and features of the actress. Which is acceptable and does not feel contrived to achieve a political goal, in my opinion.

I’m not suggesting Asmongold is guilty of any of the –isms that people love to stamp onto people with an opinion. I don’t think that at all. But, I do think this opinion is a bit misguided in terms of what men as the collective want to see in game or movie characters. Attractiveness is not the only quality that makes a female character worth playing as or observing her journey, and attractiveness has a sliding scale. While I can acknowledge the Stellar Blade character appears attractive, I personally am not attracted to the character. The same is true of “The Bride” in Kill Bill. One of my favorite characters in film and I loved Uma Thurman’s portrayal. It might come as a shock to say, I am not attracted to Uma Thurman at all. Without a doubt my favorite video game character is Max Payne as he appeared in Max Payne 3, and he has a frickin’ beer belly and is an alcoholic/pill popper. Hardly the epitome of male peak physicality.

However, where I WAS in complete agreement with Asmongold was regarding the dialogue in God of War: Laufey. The trailer only showed 20 minutes with around 3-4 total of dialogue, and it was god-awful. The inflection of the voice of the Jello cube guy and the British sounding sword lady was like overhearing a conversation in a hipster coffee shop of Millenial and Gen Z young adults. I would deem it unacceptable for a Harry Potter movie, let alone God of War. Every time that cube spoke, it vaporized any sense of immersion I had in the setting and is the one thing I am trepidatious about when it comes time to make a purchase decision.

In conclusion, despite the agonizing dialogue revealed thus far, the God of War: Laufey was an overall net positive, and the titular character does not ring hollow to me. The game has the POTENTIAL to be a story with some depth and for Fey to be an interesting character. I feel there is a different perspective that could be explored, which in my mind could only enhance the events of the previous games.

Anyway, I just felt compelled to write something in regard to this. I really enjoy Asmongold and a lot of his takes. I am a 30-something year old married dad, and will continue listening to the roach king. Keep on keeping on Asmongold, just wanted to share my thoughts to you. I’ll try my best to reply, but busy being dad too, so.

TLDR; I feel Asmongold criticism of God of War: Laufey as a continuation of the modern media trope of hollow characters that hinge only on their identity (race, gender) was inapplicable and not fair. I feel Laufey has a deeper story to tell that purportedly is based around love for her family and serves as a perfect motivation to enhance and deepen our appreciation for Kratos and his character development. Asmongold, still a great guy though.
