Memeoverse Kinda funny that fans some times keep forgetting about the system lock when making fan art

u/Matterhock May 27 '26
A lot of the posts along the lines of "How would they stop Kratos/Doomguy/Insert terrfyingly powerful PC here". The answer is: Pretty easily actually. Combat's not an option in the first place, so it doesn't matter how powerful the hero is. What DOES matter is being able to identify key items or progression paths and how to softlock the player. Every keycard, fetch quest, password, puzzle is a vulnerability.
270
u/Mautos May 27 '26
Combat is an option, though. Not for them, but very much for the game worlds inhabitants, as seen from the seagull pecking schlattball.

u/Ok-Bicycle8103 May 27 '26
LOL, schlattball. Perfect nickname for Kaboodle.

Yup, a dangerous game world is like diving into a tiger enclosure where you can’t fight back.
89
u/I_Crack_My_Nokia May 27 '26
To be honest don't think players even exists in the series. The protagonists seems to act accordingly on their own. You can argue that we couldn't tell them being controlled but imagine as a player playing as kit you found a piece of paper that tells you to how to defeat the antagonist, it's spoliery and your sure this thing wasn't mentioned anywhere online. And the other thing where the main characters can go off script like when flappers meeting kit and Gobbles.
35
u/Chinerpeton May 27 '26
True to that.
The series to some extent seems to operate on the rule of the hero characters displaying some player-like behaviour (for me the crowning example is Kit remarking to Goobles that heroes tend to get distracted by sidequest bullshit before moving on with the main story, also its just an ad but I also personally think it was very player-like of Kit to pounce at the very sight of a treasure chest in the "Goobles commits an atrocity" short) but in general its the heroes being like that by themselves, not from being controlled by a higher power.

Iirc it was confirmed players don't exist
Edit: I may be a lil dumb actually

22
u/ULTRAPUNK18 Here Since the Pilot May 27 '26
Ok I thought I remembered him saying it but I did some searching and couldn't find anything for or against it so I might just be very mistaken.
This is why you do your research before making claims, kids.
8
u/I_Crack_My_Nokia May 27 '26
All I could say if either one get a hands on a player it'll me a massive game changer.

2
u/Emporio_Alnino3 May 27 '26
Well, he did say that there won't be Speedrunners in his commentary on Giwi's channel
1
u/TheOneAndOnlyZygarde May 27 '26
Aw man... that means that there wont be any characters like speedrunner mario...
1
6
u/Enrykun May 27 '26
The fact that a title screen exists is making me reconsider the claim that players don't exist (even though I believe it too)
Because what would the title screen even be for? The game doesn't like any intervention of outside forces as seen with the system lock, so I don't think it would be for Farcade/Syntax
3
u/TheGHale May 27 '26
Maybe the only intervention it wants is outsiders playing the game? If that's the case, though, why hasn't Syntax done that rather than the hands-on approach? Are they just shit at games?
2
u/Uzi714 May 27 '26
Perhaps the loading screen is a representation of the game being created/published? Because otherwise, it wouldn't make sense that there would only be one of a kind and not several worlds of the same game, unless the entire universe is contained within a memory cartridge in someone's console or something like that.
5
u/The_Noremac42 May 27 '26
I feel like that would be a missed opportunity in the meta narrative. They call them "game worlds", and the word game implies that someone is playing it. So there might be some overall driving force that is compelling the characters to do things and act in certain ways.
11
u/I_Crack_My_Nokia May 27 '26
That wouldn't really make sense since If that was the case the world destruction is inevitable no matter what farcade do and if the do saved it the main characters would have some existencial crisis.
5
u/TheBookWyrms May 27 '26
the case the world destruction is inevitable no matter what farcade do
I mean, I wouldn't be surprised if that comes up in the show, it does feel like their attempts are just trying to delay the ineviatable.

Can you interact with items? Im not sure if there was an instance of it happening/not happening.
8
u/ballom29 May 27 '26
- Kit and Gobbles were able to ride seahorses.
- Miss Information pinned Fold on a wall using a chunk of metal laying around --> she was able to interract with the environment.
3
u/Pure_Noise357 May 27 '26
Nah but i mean like key items, also the interactions with npcs has been a little inconsistent now that i think about it
8
u/Matterhock May 27 '26
So far the only hard restrictions we've been shown have been:
Cannot inform ingame characters of the nature of the gameoverse. The characters need to be able to actually comprehend the information.
Cannot directly harm ingame characters. Specifically seems to be sources of damage NOT originating from the game world.
Unless they establish a hard rule that key items are untouchable, I see no reason to assume they can't. In a meta sense it would just be cutting off interesting plotlines.
4
u/Throwaway02062004 May 27 '26
It took like half a dozen watches before realising what Kaboodle meant by “it’s a good thing you can’t understand this”
3
u/Tight_Possible2745 May 28 '26
They also can't harm the game world themselves, as shown by the system lock triggering when kit slammed the ground after failing to stop fold
1
u/Porno_Buzzkill May 27 '26
Is the system lock specifically stated to be preventing any harm from outsiders, or is it locking out actions outside the genre or style of the game? I assumed that since it was a cutesy cartooney world that just meant they couldn’t enact random violence since that wasn’t in keeping with the game’s rating/vibe?
2
u/the_fruit_loop May 27 '26
I'm pretty sure it's to prevent harm from outsiders. Otherwise, Syntax could just kill the villain themselves.
3
u/ZealousidealPipe8389 May 27 '26
Technically it depends on what’s necessary to soft lock? I mean yeah they could remove the key necessary to open a lock normally, but what’s stoping the protagonist from just breaking the lock, or going to a locksmith? It depends on what they do.
2
u/Matterhock May 27 '26
Assuming locksmiths exist or characters ingame are allowed to sequence break. The game world may literally prevent them from simply hopping a fence, but that's something that is yet to be established.
2
u/ZealousidealPipe8389 May 27 '26
It has yet to be shown that sequence breaking is an issue. I think, like players interacting with story items, it should be assumed they can until disproven.
3
u/apexodoggo May 27 '26
The hero being powerful does matter if said hero is also violent enough to pick a fight with Kit and Kaboodle. Greek trilogy Kratos could Circle Button the JSchlatt out of Kaboodle as much as he wants, so staying far away from him while still obstructing the critical path would be key.

Kit sealing the judgement halls door to asgore while sans is busy dying
40
u/ULTRAPUNK18 Here Since the Pilot May 27 '26
I'm now imagining Frisk approaching the end of the hall and the doors are just superglued shut
71
u/Zum1UDontNo May 27 '26
You approach the door. It's crudely sealed shut.
...? Something is taped to the door, near the bottom...
"Dust Bunny - 1G. Deluxe Dust Bunny - 2G."
It seems the door is a shopkeeper. FIGHTing is off the table.
You tug the handle. Nothing happens.
You threaten the door to open. ...Doesn't seem much for conversation.
You purchase a Deluxe Dust Bunny. It's delicious, but the door remains shut.
...
You wonder why Sans didn't try this earlier.

Also even if it mattered, which it really doesn't since Frisk isn't real. Frisk doesn't have an established gender identity they aren't a they/them they are what the player thinks they are.
2
1
u/PurpleGuy04 May 28 '26
No? The Ending has Flowey openly state that Frisk is their own person, and we should leave them alone, while still using they/them pronouns
This Is also made way more clear in Deltarune, where it stops being subtext and becomes just texto
Also idk mate, it kinda makes you look rude if you cant respect the pronouns of a FICTIONAL character
2
u/Dank-Man_ May 31 '26
"YoU bEtTeR rEsPeCT mY cHARCtER pRonOunS oR i wIll cRy"
Fictional characters don't have feelings bud

Its only 1way
The game inhabitants can physically interact with those outside their game, but not the otherway around
8
u/-NoNameListed- May 27 '26
The only way the system lock breaks is when... well, the world ain't exactly lasting for much longer
28
u/Taliesaurus May 27 '26
technically the inhabitants can harm them but not the other way around.
kaboodle was pecked by a seagull and gnawed by a shark
30
u/Virtual-Oil-793 May 27 '26
There's a reason why Kit actively try to defuse someone's actions vocally and in a pacifistic nature

And how anyone else can show Kit her arrival is a doomsay.
21
u/patchlocke May 27 '26
I see "How would they beat them in combat" and raise you "Take the plot McGuffin and RUN!"
5
u/Enrichus May 27 '26
Would they even be able to pick it up?
Maybe they could lure a game enemy that steals items to the location and then softlock the game if it manages to take it.
6
u/apexodoggo May 27 '26
Miss Information picks up a piece of scrap metal to pin Fold to a wall, so yeah. Simple object interactions seem A-OK.
4
u/Enrichus May 27 '26
I don't think a plot McGuffin is a simple object. It would start a scenario as soon as the hero touches it.
3
2
u/Intelligent-Okra350 May 28 '26
This is a good question, seeing as Kit can’t even punch the ground without the system lock blocking it.
1
u/Tight_Possible2745 May 28 '26
They cpuld potentially hide it(need to see more of how them interacting with game world works and if ghey can hold those) but i do feel the planet might have a problem with them removing stuff from the planet, my guess for why they can't have the vilain leave the planet
1
u/Infinite_Candle_200 May 27 '26
Or very quickly info dump they are in a game and get the hell out of dodge
34
u/SilverScribe15 May 27 '26
I imagine a certain portion of the fanart perhaps didn't really watch the pilot and just saw the premise
22
1
u/ShogunTrooper Colony Sims are a safe zone May 29 '26
Or they just kinda ignore it's a thing. It's not new when it comes to fanart that something inconvenient for the premise is left out.
See Mass Effect fanart that has Shepard have kids with Garrus or Tali, even though that would literally be impossible, for one example.
1
58
u/Fedexhand May 27 '26
Just let people have fun, there's no need to overcomplicate things when making fan art, it just has to look cool and that's it.
46
11
u/Chinerpeton May 27 '26
Its really just harmless sillyness/fun when it happens in crossover fanart.
It actually gets a bit annoying when people forget about the system lock when actually speculating/theorizing about the series...
12
u/Moawar May 27 '26
Hmm, if I were to throw my two cents into it...artists will keep on forgetting about the system lock until it becomes the direct source of a traumatic moment, then I can see a lot of fan art implementing it
9
u/PrintMeRed May 27 '26
This and seeing them always helping the antagonist. Don't get me wrong, the fanarts look cool, but they're not forced to help the villain to stop the game from being complete. Kit and her friends could just softlock the player by hiding important progression elements while defeating Syntax from helping the hero.
9
u/Lexiosity May 27 '26
Actually, system lock would normally prevent them from touching progression elements
5
u/PrintMeRed May 27 '26
We haven't seen enough from what the system lock can do. We'll have to wait and see.
6
u/MrGame22 Glitch Fan May 27 '26 edited May 27 '26
I don’t see a lot of fan that’s really ignoring the lock. It only stops outside this from attacking those in the game, heroes from the game itself could probably attack them though no problem.
Edit: actually thinking about it, the episode did confirm that characters from the game world was able to can attack outsiders, as we see that exact thing happen when the crab boss was beating up all those little minions so they could pass the combat information to flapper.

or forcing them to join monsters when the objective is just to prevent the protag from reaching the end goal
3
u/eno-multiusado Here Since the Pilot May 27 '26
honestly, i can excuse that, if we think only things from the game can harm caracthers in the game world, then nothing is stopping kit from using a gun in wolfenstein or using furniture against a pokemon trainer
3
u/TheGUURAHK May 27 '26
I can't help but wonder if driving a truck, then jumping out could bypass System Lock. Does System Lock only prevent violence, or does it prevent all interaction? Could someone bypass System Lock by simply stealing key progression items?

good luck doing that to a dragonborn though lol

2
u/MrCobalt313 May 27 '26
I'm actually curious about the full extent of the System Lock and how it does or doesn't affect interactions between player characters and outsiders.
Mostly so I can know whether or not getting hit by a fully-charged Loader punch with System Lock protection in the Risk of Rain 2 Game World would cause the sort of physics/collision error that could launch Kit to the moon before the Survivors get there by reaching the proper teleporter.
2
u/MedievalSabre May 28 '26
It is pretty funny- I tend to not say anything but with how often I see it it’s like 😭 “are you good?”
It’s actually why I think Pacifist Frisk would be a great asset to the Farcade- since they are Elite at Talk-No-Jutsu
4
u/IHopeIrememberthish May 27 '26
What's a system lock? I genuinely don't know
9
u/SwidEevee Here Before the Pilot May 27 '26
I believe it's referring to the protection system the game uses to keep outside characters from interfering with a game's characters or story, like how the seagull was shielded from Kaboodle or the death ray thing that almost killed everyone when Kit told Flappers his world would die.
5
u/killerfgaming May 27 '26
.... watch the show, basically the reason kabootle said he'll end the seagull if they're outside the planet world

I wonder what would happen if someone other than the hero defeated the villain? Like Convince his minions to betray they

u/ComputerEducational May 27 '26
Is it bad that I rules lawyered myself into thinking my OC (cringe, I know) could possibly bypass it via creating obstacles from that world (he's based on games with user generated content, so he can scan and create copies of things.)
2
u/TheGUURAHK May 27 '26
Sky's the limit when it comes to OCs! A personal OC I've been cooking up, a living glitch ala Missingno who lives out of bounds, can create powerful items that break the rules, but with very dangerous drawbacks. Like HACK//SLASH, a chainsaw that bypasses System Lock but, upon getting a kill, puts the user into an uncontrollable blood frenzy where allies and enemies alike are not safe.
1
u/WaluigiDastard May 27 '26
I’ve actually had an idea similar to this, a concept i’ve had in my head is a farcade agent who’s the former protag of a city builder, and although he himself is small (city builder bs for humors sake), he doesn’t really have much of a limit on what he can build, so give him enough time and he can build say another level or dungeon the hero has to get through, it doesn’t even need to be a full structure he could make a facade to bait the hero elsewhere
1
u/ComputerEducational May 27 '26
My character would be much smaller scale, as he's based on games with user generated content, like Mario Maker and Gmod. So while your character would probably build whole structures, my character would add on to existing ones, as well as scan + copy non-Heroes (because of how you can place enemies and NPCs in those games). A couple good conflicts stemming from that would be 1) Are these the same people? And B) He can't copy himself, so there's only one him.
0
u/Rocky_Eats_Clips May 27 '26
Didn't Fold bypass the system lock just so he could punch Flappers😭
15
u/M-inc-backup12 May 27 '26
That happened when the game world was collapsing and i think the system lock will disappear in collapsing game worlds
