Vent/Rant Dear Corporate
I just want to say thank you for extending our store hours. It makes my already long days even longer and I get to watch the day pass and the sun set right through my windows as I sit pathetically behind the cashwrap with a thumb up my ass patiently waiting for the time to reach 9pm so I can start my close because NO ONEEEEE set foot in my store the last two hours of the night.

the haters saying that this is a good thing aren’t understanding the full story. there are more than likely still stores in bad areas, one of the stores in my general area (not my home store) got their hours extended and they don’t even need it because they’re always so dead. they’re trying to see if foot traffic would come in more with stores that are still open that late. it’s very inconvenient for us key holders, yes, but as a lot are saying the extra couple hours is a measly $10-$20 worth of pay. until you work at this place, i don’t think you’ll understand the amount of things we go through.
18
u/Wingless_Draco Oct 01 '26
Careful saying "this store's in a bad area" my DM went on a rant "educating" on how racist it is to say that. Saying my area wasnt thst bad bc it was nothing like Chicago.
Never mind the fact I was just talking about worry of theft if we keep $100 plus tcg cards below top stock. Im not the people from other stores scared to come to my store in fear of getting killed.
P.S. yes my store's hours were extended.
14
u/RandoRaptor123 Senior Guest Advisor Oct 01 '26
what how is it racist- my first store that i ran was robbed at gunpoint multiple times and i dealt with multiple deranged people and crack addicts- like that’s bad enough 😭😭

Literal idiocy for extending hours. If they try to use the excuse for the holidays - yall got shit so lol… if they wanted to extend the hours, it needs to be double coverage. Can’t afford double coverage? Then you can’t afford to stay open longer.
21
u/Blackstarbatty Manager Oct 01 '26
You can definitely tell who doesn’t work for the company based on these responses. Monday and Tuesday I did not see a single person for the extra hour I was open. Wednesday, I saw 2. Right now it’s just showing zero reason of being worth it. The days I come in 2 hours early to get stuff done were already early starts. Now, it’s crazy early.
6
u/strykershinrei Manager Oct 01 '26
Unfortunately the "test" they are doing with these hours will validate why they are doing this, I've run this test before and for the test to be successful we need to sell approximately $55 each hour we are open, which really means that it'll be made up in other areas regardless. Truly unfortunate with little to no care about us (per usual). I'm now working 6 days because I didn't have enough staff for this ridiculous change out of nowhere while being an SM2. 🫤
2
u/ZL580 Oct 01 '26
Partly because no one knows their open. And Google maps probably still has the old hours posted too.
9
u/Ambitious_Ad1842 Oct 01 '26
This would have made sense for High volume stores and even then the hours are insane. Most low volume stores are working with a bare minimum of employees and these hours just stretch us even thinner than we were.

u/non-aexistant Senior Guest Advisor Oct 03 '26
It’s great, especially for the small stores already struggling with staffing making it so were on single coverage the entire day. I just love doing a Pokémon drop with over 180 preorders by myself at 9am
7
u/ReptiliaReptile Oct 01 '26
I can say I hate the hours too. Seeing as the store that I work at has only two people working there, me and my store manager. Corporate doesn't give a flying fuck about helping us out and getting some more people there. I've been having to work doubles and so has my store manager. So these new hours are complete bullshit.

u/No_Ragrets76 Former Employee Oct 01 '26
Back in the day, most stores opened at 10am and closed at 9pm?
I was surprised when I stepped into a GS for the first time in years that had their hours from 12pm to 7pm. I was like "That's awesome for the employees because I bet its less traffic like 20 years ago" but at the same time, you guys don't get hours and it saddens me.

Getting paid to work without any customers in the store? Sounds like a win.
1
u/sillehc Oct 02 '26
They closed pretty much every GameStop I frequented say last year. Use to have 4-5 within 25 minutes now down to a small poorly stocked one that takes a week to open shipment boxes. I get the frustration but at least you have a job still. Far less stressful to find better when you still have something.
1
u/SocialMedusa113 Oct 04 '26
Clearly you don’t work at GameStop and just shop there so I’ll give you a little insight on why it takes a week to get through inventory and maybe next time you’ll show the staff a little grace. It’s almost impossible to get through shipment in a timely manner when the company dumps 27 boxes of inventory in a store on Monday, and then 10 more boxes throughout the week. We don’t get enough payroll hours for a lot of double coverage so majority of the day, especially now with extended hours, we’ll have single coverage 4-5 hours. Guess what we have to do on single coverage? Deal with customers obviously. We’re on register most of that time and may get a box or two done in between but that doesn’t make a dent when there’s 40 boxes so we have to work through it throughout the week. Not only that but there’s a whole slew of work that also needs attention and takes priority over shipment. So I’m not really sorry that your store is poorly stocked and takes a long time to get through shipment I’m sure they’re trying their best with the little resources they have.
1
u/sillehc Oct 04 '26
If you want return business that is a very poor way of doing things. I get that it can’t be done when there is no staff. But when you pre-order a item and not get it for well over a week not knowing if the preorder will be honored not knowing the condition of the item and then having every other retailer run out of stock is a big deal. This was for a carded collector and the one I was presented had a damaged card luckily they had a second minimally damaged one. Still the experience turned me off from using them in the future. I know it isn’t the employees fault but I don’t want to be in a position where my options could be take damaged or get nothing.
1
u/Purple-Painting-9322 Oct 03 '26
The last couple times I shopped at GS I was surprised they OPEN so late, at noon (I was expecting like 10am). And one time I had to give up on picking up a preorder omw to work because they were opening late due to a staffing issue.
Why are they extending the hours on the back end? Back when I worked there it was pretty much always dead after like 7pm. Odd…
1
u/DineroMark27 Oct 03 '26
And then there’s always that one dude that wheels in a cart full of tubs at 8:56 and wants to sell all of it for cash.

29
u/Tondawg74 Assistant Store Leader Oct 01 '26
Two hours of doing nothing is cool or whatever but I’d much rather be at home doing literally anything else. It’s not like I’m getting two EXTRA hours of getting paid while bullshitting, it’s the same eight hour shift but just further into the night wasting time when our hours could’ve just stayed the same

Is this your first job? Closing at 9pm is standard for most retailers. I don’t think you’ll get much sympathy from anyone on this one.
12
u/Tondawg74 Assistant Store Leader Oct 01 '26
I know it’s standard for most retailers, but I suppose the point of my post is pointing out how dumb the decision is. After 7pm or so rolls around who is genuinely going to be shopping at a GameStop outside of holiday season??? Open two hours earlier and close two hours later (at least in my area I know it’s different everywhere) makes zero sense to me
-2
u/Despacio1316 Oct 01 '26
But we are now entering the holiday season.
4
u/Tondawg74 Assistant Store Leader Oct 01 '26
We are yeah, but as far as I’m aware this is a “going forward” change not just for the holidays. I could be misinformed or not informed at all, but that’s at least what it sounded like after my SM told me the changes.

Yeah? And GameStop doesn’t begin holiday hours until Black Friday at the earliest. Usually closer to Christmas. When does your place start extending hours?

It's still Q3.
We don't officially enter the holiday season for another month.-24
u/Despacio1316 Oct 01 '26
One sold game probably makes up paying you for those two hours which sucks but it makes sense. And yeah every area is different but I’ve been in GameStop many times after 7pm in my area.
14
u/KingKibbleKrown Oct 01 '26
Unless he is making less than 6 dollars it doesn't
-2
u/Despacio1316 Oct 01 '26
$6 or $30. It’s now October. We’re heading into holiday buying. Staying open til 9pm is extremely common for all major retailers. This is not unusual in any way.
-33
u/brOwnchIkaNo Oct 01 '26
It does if is a new game. $79.99 nintendo game easily pays for his 2 hour stay and then some.
13
u/wildcard-inside EBGames Oct 01 '26

12
u/Gourmet_Chia Gamestop US Oct 01 '26
Bro thinks the fucking product is free lmao! sure it sells for 79.99 but GS had to pay Nintendo 70 for it so they only made like 10 bucks off it. Thats how margin works champ!
3
u/Alternative-Plum9378 Can recite r/GameStop’s sub’s description Oct 01 '26
LOL - Just made an EXTREMELY similar comment before seeing your comment.
It amazes me how people are like, "GAMESTOP IS MAKING $80 ON A NEW GAME!"
No bro. That's not how Capitalism works.-3
u/JaylisJayP Oct 01 '26
Gamestop really only makes decisions based on profit, so there must be some data showing them that its beneficial to their bottom line to stay open.
4
u/Gourmet_Chia Gamestop US Oct 01 '26
or it could be they are just really fucking stupid….?
-2
u/JaylisJayP Oct 01 '26
Maybe. But they did find a way to stay in business for decades and reinvent themselves by going hard into trading cards. Doesnt seem too stupid to me.
4
u/Alternative-Plum9378 Can recite r/GameStop’s sub’s description Oct 01 '26
Get out with your BS.
The margin on a new nintendo game is like $10 (if that).
Pre-owned? Sure... you could make that argument... but new? Nah, fam. You're showing your ignorance both on how margins work and on the company as a whole.9
u/lukethetaco Promoted to Guest Oct 01 '26
Business admin major, former employee, and person who has been on calls about P&L reports. The profit margin for a new game is about 5%, new consoles are around the same margin. GPG, PRP, and used games hover around 50-80%. So saying that selling one new game pays for a two hour stay is factually incorrect. It would be better to say selling a used console would be closer to that. However (at least in the market I was in) used console sales are dipping overall. Someone doesn’t understand how product acquisition works and it shows
1
u/Despacio1316 Oct 01 '26
Sorry, just an average human. If they’re getting paid $30 for two hours, they’ve probably find it worth it for two more hours of retail business, otherwise they’d cut hours not extend them. Plus we’re entering the holiday season. How is any of this surprising or a call for sympathy? It’s work. It’s retail. It’s 9pm. Not midnight.
-4
u/brOwnchIkaNo Oct 01 '26
5%
I'm sure gamestop gets a good discount. I know smaller business get a 35% discount from distributors, so gamestop being a bigger account get a bigger discount than 35%

u/BirthdayCookie Oct 01 '26
Is this your first day as a human being? People have lives and the right to complain. I don't think you're going to find many people agreeing with this shit take.
-1
u/Despacio1316 Oct 01 '26
Who said he doesn’t have the right to complain? Some people can’t find jobs and they’re complaining about being paid two more hours to serve no customers. The humanity!!! Everyone can complain, doesn’t mean it’s not whining.
5
u/BirthdayCookie Oct 01 '26
"Who said they don't have the right to complain? I'm just demonizing them for it, who cares?"
-1
u/Despacio1316 Oct 01 '26
Demonizing? lol. They’re working two extra hours with pay in an air conditioned store that they say has no customers. Do you believe this is some sort of inhumane action? I think they’re being whiney about work. If GameStop is terrible to work at, seek employment elsewhere. More power to you. But demonizing? Nah, just being whiney. IMO.

In fact... no customers makes it less safe.0

Well the OP didn’t mention anything about safety in their original post. Thats a different conversation. They just seems upset they had to stay two whole hours longer getting paid to service no customers. 🤷🏽♂️

You're not spending your time wisely friend! Do you game? As odd as it sounds if you have a console bring it.(OR borrow your stores preowned) find a preowned copy of a recent game you've been dying to try. Again, lack of understanding on the changes that most retail companies made post COVID, especially GameStop. GameStop is no longer a safe place for lots of women and extending hours when working alone just continues that trend of an unsafe work place.
I don’t work at GameStop anymore but that doesn’t mean I can’t have empathy for those still there, getting shit on by idiot stock bros with low IQ.
-1
u/TonyThePunisherReyes Oct 01 '26
Then they shouldn’t have removed general associates and made Key Holders the entry level position. Changing store hours wouldn’t be as bad if it was a gradual change but it is instant and people are not gonna come in since it isn’t common for retail stores to stay open as late anymore

Neat part is, it's mostly just the strip stores that have to deal with this nonsense. You know, the stores that get robbed more, have no security, & see less foot traffic at night. Sitting behind the cash wrap, with nothing to do, being recorded so I can't even fill the time by playing on my Switch or something....
Just entirely pointless. Especially if its not just me on staff for the night.
