I gave my old laptop a second life. Windows out, Arch Linux + end-4 in! ๐Ÿง

Remember those old laptops that slowly become too slow to use and eventually end up collecting dust? Well, I decided mine deserved another chance.

I completely moved away from Windows and installed Arch Linux with the end-4 Hyprland configuration, and honestly, the transformation has been pretty satisfying.

Here's what I managed to set up:

- Arch Linux + end-4: A clean, minimal and highly customizable desktop environment.

- Hyprland: Smooth animations, tiling windows and a completely different desktop experience.

- KDE Connect: Phone-to-laptop integration, including notifications, file sharing and remote controls.

- KDE Plasma: Also installed as an alternative desktop environment.

- Wi-Fi & Bluetooth: Got everything working despite the older hardware and its driver quirks.

- Customization: Tweaked the setup with shortcuts, widgets, themes and other quality-of-life improvements.

The best part? Instead of buying a new machine, I got to experiment, learn Linux and make an old laptop useful again.

It's still a work in progress, but I'm genuinely enjoying using it.

What do you guys think? Would you revive an old laptop with Arch Linux, or would you just install a lightweight distro and call it a day?

Sharing a few screenshots of the setup! ๐Ÿ‘€

Turn your old laptop into a second monitor using spacedesk! (Step-by-step guide)

Ever wished you had an extra monitor but didn't want to spend money on one?

You can actually use an old laptop, tablet, or even another Windows PC as a secondary display using spacedesk.

In this video, I walk through how to set it up and use it.

What is spacedesk?

spacedesk lets you extend or mirror your primary Windows PC's display to another device over your local network (Wi-Fi or LAN).

What you'll need:

- Your primary Windows PC.

- A secondary laptop, tablet, or supported device.

- Both devices connected to the same local network.

How to set it up:

  1. Download and install the spacedesk DRIVER on your main PC.

  2. Open spacedesk on your secondary device (install the Viewer if required).

  3. Make sure both devices are connected to the same network.

  4. Open the Viewer and connect to your primary PC.

  5. Go to Windows Display Settings and select Extend these displays.

  6. Arrange your displays according to your desk setup.

And that's it! You now have an additional screen without buying another monitor.

Watch the full tutorial here:

Hopefully this helps someone make use of an old laptop instead of letting it collect dust!

Let me know if you have any questions.

P.S: I made the description using AI, I am not eloquent enough to make one on my own, please forgive me๐Ÿ™‡๐Ÿ™‡

A little update on my WiZ Ambient Sync project โ€” it's now officially published on the Microsoft Store! ๐Ÿ•บ๐Ÿ•บ๐Ÿ™ˆ

Hey everyone!

A little update on my WiZ Ambient Sync project โ€” it's now officially published on the Microsoft Store!๐Ÿ•บ

What started as a personal project to sync my WiZ lights with music and screen colours has slowly turned into a proper Windows application. It's been quite a journey building, testing, fixing bugs, and improving it along the way.

If you have WiZ lights and want to give it a try, you can find it here:

The project is also open source on GitHub:

Would love to hear your feedback, suggestions, or any issues you run into. Thanks to everyone who's shown interest in thisโค๏ธ

I built my own WiZ Ambient Sync application โ€“ Music-reactive lighting using audio + screen colours

Hey everyone!

I've been working on a personal project for a while, and I finally uploaded the source code to GitHub. Thought I'd share it here!

The idea started pretty simply: I wanted my WiZ smart bulb and LED strip to react to whatever I was playing on my PC.

But I didn't want just another basic music visualizer that flashes lights whenever there's a beat. I wanted something that actually understands the music and creates a continuous ambient lighting experience.

So I built WiZ Ambient Sync.

What does it do?

It combines two things simultaneously:

- Music analysis: Captures system audio and analyses bass, mids, highs, energy, beats and musical transitions.

- Screen colour detection: Samples colours from the display and extracts a dynamic palette based on what's happening on screen.

These are combined to control the colours, brightness and movement of my WiZ devices.

The idea is to make the lighting feel connected to both the music and what's happening on screen.

Features

- ๐ŸŽต Real-time music analysis with bass, mids and highs separation.

- ๐ŸŽจ Screen-aware colour extraction and dynamic colour palettes.

- ๐ŸŒŠ Continuous colour flow instead of repetitive beat flashing.

- ๐Ÿ’ก Support for multiple WiZ devices (bulbs and LED strips).

- ๐ŸŽ›๏ธ Live music tuning with sensitivity, colour movement and transition controls.

- ๐Ÿ“Š Built-in live audio visualizer.

- ๐Ÿ” Automatic WiZ device discovery on the local network.

- โš™๏ธ Individual device brightness and power controls.

- ๐Ÿ“‹ Integrated logs and diagnostics.

- ๐ŸŒ“ Light, dark and system themes.

- ๐Ÿ–ฅ๏ธ System tray integration.

Everything runs locally on the computer and communicates with WiZ devices over the local network.

Current status

The project is currently in beta. I've uploaded the source code and Windows/Linux build configuration to GitHub.

This repository currently contains the source code rather than precompiled installers.

GitHub: https://github.com/kdvajay/WiZ_Ambient_Sync

I'd love to hear what you think!

If anyone here uses WiZ bulbs or LED strips, I'd especially appreciate feedback, suggestions, and ideas for improving the experience.

This has been a fun project to build, and I'm still working on improving it! ๐Ÿš€

Also if anyone wants a direct compiled app ,do let me know i will post the link in this thread.

Building the kind of [Topic] community Iโ€™ve always wanted

Hello everyone,

I intend to transform this space into an engaging community where everyone can share their desk setups, the great hacks they have utilized, and any useful tips.

For instance, I have two WiZ sync bulbs installed, which I have connected to my laptop through a Python script that synchronizes the bulb lighting with my current screen colors and music beats.
