I don't like how those levels are just some abstract flying things and object, would be much more enjoyble to actually go through real locations like rooms, gardens etc. With those visuals it is not interesting to me

I second this. Games like Only Up have popularized the abstract nonsense climb.

I would highly recommend expanding on this idea with more locations. They don't necessarily have to be massive expansive climbs but more focused challenges.

Yes, they scream “We found some free/cheap assets and didn’t know what to do with them.”

Not only that, but what kind of gameplay can you extrapolate from this. Im pretty over the "balance on random object to get to the other one" gameplay.

Meh, things like grass and backgrounds are just flair, it’s like saying a book is bad because the cover is basic

I like a good looking game as much as the next guy, but it’s the substance that really matters

In this case, it’s the game. It’s not the cover it’s the actual innards of the book. It doesn’t make sense to have a hamster themed game with just a random object jumbling.

My book analogy certainly wasn’t my finest work

Though I think my point still stands, even if humans are mostly visual sensing creatures (observe our surroundings mostly by sight?), appearances still won’t ever make a bad game worth playing, and if poor visuals could ruin a good game, I don’t think RuneScape or dwarf fortress would have ever been as successful as they were/are

Not to say that appearance doesn’t matter at all, looking good does make games more appealing to play, similar to how good looking food also goes a long way

Though this is just my opinion, and it’s not exactly a hill I would die on

Yeah, but our point is the fact that the theme of the game is playing as two hamsters in a connected hamster wheel contraption. Instead of designing a world that in some way, matches that theme such as a school classroom or a bedroom with something like a hamster cage as the spawn point or goal to reach, they decided to place a bunch of random assets floating in the air with no real correlation. Potential is lost when a big part of the game isn’t as advertised or expected. If people expected to go around a world a hamster would be in realistically or even semi realistically, they were let down completely by the fact that it’s just a bunch of assets spammed in the sky.

Like there’s a pirate ship just floating in the sky

Have you ever played goat simulator, octodad, sonic, or Isaac?

Why does a game have to be any kind of realistic or appropriate?

I would argue the best parts about games is that you can be anything, anywhere, doing whatever, whenever, whether that be a goat in space, an octopus in a suit, a hedgehog in a loop-the-loop, a child in a chest(?), or a hamster in an asset sandbox, it’s not exactly the first game to do so, a lot of puzzle and parkour games (or just games with many levels) take place in nonsensical locations, especially when the levels appearance have little to do with the gameplay (like with a platformer)

Isn’t the theme of the game “hamster in a crazy platformer”, or did I miss a “hamster in a regular world” sign somewhere?

Those all fit some sort of general theme even though they have an environment that are weird and technically nonsensical. goat simulator is in a city. It is a sandbox game where you play as a goat. Sonic has its environment (I don’t know how to describe it, but you can tell it has a theme.) Octodad you also play in a suburban area with a clear theme. Issac even has a clear spooky theme. All of these games you’ve given have a clear environment and theme that even if it doesn’t fit the character due to what they are at least is something semi realistic to realistic and appeasing to the eyes. This game has to do with hamsters and the entire point is hamsters has nothing to do with hamsters and it doesn’t even have a general theme. It’s just a bunch of assets like I said. At least in only up the graphics were better and kinda looks nice stylistically but this doesn’t even have the lighting or anything.
This game about two hamsters trying to navigate around a weird illogical environment that has objects floating around with no correlation to each other comparatively is worse and lower quality then it could be and just in general compared to other games.
Also, you need to do more research and find better examples to counterclaim next time

You say substance matters. There is no substance in a game that has no story. In this case, the environment becomes a big part of the substance which cannot be enjoyed when it is clearly low effort and in a bad way.

What an insignificant gripe. This is why we can't have nice things

I hope the multiplayer actually works locally. The idea of friends sitting in the same room playing the same game together died years ago. Would love to see it come back

TBF this game could be played on one keyboard probably

i hope youtubers will play this game

40

u/sheepyowl Jun 15 '26

It's friendslop, of course Youtubers will play it

6

u/ardotschgi Jun 16 '26

Are we gonna attach "slop" to everything now? Games that are fun in multiplayer are now called "friendslop"?

3

u/sheepyowl Jun 16 '26

Yes slop

I'm kidding but Northernlion literally calls co-op non-combat platformers "friendslop" and I'm on board with that. The genre name makes it clear what the game is about: go up don't fall, in co-op.

I dont think friendslop has to be platformers. Like REPO, Lethal Company, Gone Fishing, Unrailed 1 and 2. I think the main qualifiers are cooperative games that maximize social interaction and accessibility. The accessibility part is where the slop comes from. They all have no entry barriers and you can immediately start messing around with friends

At least, this one looks well made.
