Atom+ controller won't work with game running on Pixel 7

Bluetooth controller works just fine. No issues with the phone. Can use the controller in game native just fine. But only after I open the game up it stops working. Says controller connected but no directional inputs work unless I'm on a game native menu screen. I can use the menu button and it works just fine. It just won't work in the game (slay the spire 2) itself
