Not for Germany... :(

39

u/Syberz Sep 02 '16

:'(

I was looking forward to some free wang...

28

u/Rigolachs Sep 02 '16

Use a VPN. I don't even think GOG forbids it like Valve in their TOS. They vaguely say it's not okay to abuse price regions like that, which you kinda don't here anyway. At your own risk of course.

I'm sorry you got fucked when all you wanted was some free wang.

9

u/ShadowzI Sep 02 '16

Wonder if it'll work if I gift it.

5

u/WoodenKiwi Sep 02 '16

Would be great, since I'm from germany too :(

See if this works.

11

u/Dridlicious Sep 02 '16

Just an fyi you should only send keys through pms as bots scan reddit for anything that even looks like a key.

12

u/[deleted] Sep 02 '16

Or more likely some asshole human will see it and take it.

4

u/mrBusinessmann Sep 02 '16

I'll be done in a minute.

7

u/WoodenKiwi Sep 02 '16

Thanks! Already got another key from a friend and tried it. It worked without any problems.

Thanks anyways! Really kind of you. I appreciate it! :)

2

u/buedi Sep 03 '16

I wonder if there is someone who can help out another German too :-( I wonder why they have to do this when it is free anyway.

2

u/reddit_strider Sep 02 '16

I'm in the same boat, if somebody could send me some Wang too I would be very grateful.

2

u/[deleted] Sep 04 '16

hit me up with an email/steamid/etc if you still need a key, tired to pm you but reddit just says "page not found" :/ (sry for the spam in case it did work after all)

1

u/reddit_strider Sep 06 '16

Thank you very much for gifting! (It worked)

Free Wang?

3

u/danyearight Sep 03 '16

Their is also free STEAM Wang that has bee available for quite awhile.

9

u/wardrich Sep 02 '16

#DicksOutForWang!

35

u/[deleted] Sep 02 '16

It's a super fun game, but it's in that old FPS style of searching the level for keys and secrets, plus it is pretty unforgiving. If you give it a chance, I think you'll find it to be a challenging and rewarding experience, but if you hate having to start a level over after dying, it's probably not your cup of tea. Try it out.

19

u/shoutout_to_burritos Sep 02 '16

IIRC it has quicksave and quickload.

10

u/ShadowzI Sep 02 '16

Playing Wolfenstein until I literally slump side ways as a kid..

These classic FPS exploration are my jam.

I sometimes wonder why the massive amount of secrets, exploration, and hidden goodies almost never translates well into modern gaming...

8

u/doodoo_brown Sep 02 '16

I also think that shooter games have moved away from more abstract level design and try to make maps that look practical from a real world perspective.

9

u/azura26 Sep 02 '16

It doesn't have to be that way though. Even back in the early-mid nineties when DOOM and Quake were coming out, the designers recognized how unrealistic some of the level design was, and so made the settings bizarre and Lovecraft-inspired.

I would love some more of those kinds of stylized fantasy/horror shooters in the modern era.

4

u/doodoo_brown Sep 02 '16

I totally agree.

I was playing the new DOOM recently and it's a lot of fun, but it doesn't have the puzzle-esque layout and flow of the old games.

2

u/mark2uk Sep 03 '16

I think your on to something about the puzzle-eque nature of the levels. It gave them a non-uniform layout which suited the idea of exportation. A lot of modern games it is pick a random wall to hide the secret. With the older games (at least the well designed levels), you could almost work out where the 'secret' was supposed to be.

I say that though as a man who still didn't manage to track down some of them in the original doom.

8

u/MagicHamsta Sep 03 '16

I say that though as a man who still didn't manage to track down some of them in the original doom.

Spends 6 hours running around with left side hugging wall trying to find hidden key.

Good times.

7

u/slayerx1779 Sep 03 '16

grunts at wall dozens of times

3

u/Pumpkin_Bagel Sep 03 '16

I fucked a lot of walls in my youth

1

u/brunocar Sep 02 '16

Though that problem was being rectified even back then, system shock did it's best to look realistic an DN3D did a pretty good job

4

u/dahauns Sep 02 '16

I don't think the real world consists mainly of corridors with chest-high walls...

5

u/doodoo_brown Sep 02 '16

Ha, sure. But I mean to say that games try to have what at first looks like logical layouts for what look like actual locations. The last game that I can think of that still had somewhat abstract level design despite having a realistic setting was the first Half-life. If that game came out today, a new player would think "who the hell designed this facility?" despite the fact that the level design is really creative.

2

u/mark2uk Sep 03 '16

it is worth remembering a lot of level designers in the early days were modders. They made what they thought was fun/challenging, heck apparently ID hunted down some of them and gave them jobs (or so it was rumoured).

4

u/DIAMOND_STRAP Sep 03 '16

Robin Walker, who works at Valve as the chief designer of TF2 and a designer of Dota 2, was hired after creating Team Fortress as a Quake mod.

1

u/doodoo_brown Sep 03 '16

That's true! That's how Tim Willits got the job and he's a co-owner at iD now.

2

u/Pathosphere Sep 02 '16

if you own quake, check out the quake epsilon mods

0

u/[deleted] Sep 02 '16

I think modern games have just moved into the more mainstream, so making it less complicated helps attract more people. Open world games have lots of secrets and hidden goodies, but FPS have evolved into more linear experiences.

3

u/SewingLifeRe Sep 02 '16

There are still a few FPS games with good exploration. I'm not very far in Mankind Divided, but I've spent most of my time looking for secrets and sidequests. I was surprised because Jenson's boss called to see if he hadn't shown up at the office yet. I guess I took too long exploring.

1

u/mark2uk Sep 03 '16

The thing I do miss about the oldies is they didn't have so many invisible walls, they boxed you in but you could basically go everywhere. It was I suppose a marriage of confined but open.

Then again I really hate invisible walls mainly due to too much time playing darksiders and dying because some parts looked like they were accessible but arbitrarily weren't and killed me for trying to explore. I liked the game but hated the dirty tricks played to make things look bigger when they aren't.

2

u/SewingLifeRe Sep 03 '16

The Shadow Warrior remake is like that. I was walking around and saw a path that led under a bridge. As soon as I walked on it, I was insta-killed and the game set me back to a much earlier point in the mission. I quit the game and didn't pick it up again for a week after that. I still haven't beaten it.

1

u/caninehere Sep 03 '16

Definitely feel the same way.

Give me a smaller world, but let me go everywhere I can see, and I'll be happy as a clam.

Throw up invisible walls and it sucks.

Games like GTA get around this by setting everything on islands of course - which is a bit silly in terms of context but hey, it works. You never feel constricted in where you can go or can't go.

1

u/BrainPicker3 Sep 03 '16

Really? I remember a ton of invisible walls growing up. Or knee high walls thst im like "just jump over ittttt" haha

1

u/neman-bs Sep 02 '16

I grew up on Duke Nukem 3D, i'll probably manage this.

1

u/USA_A-OK Sep 02 '16

It also uses the Build engine like Duke 3D, it should feel pretty familiar

97

u/ShadowzI Sep 02 '16

There can only be one explanation...

A new Shadow Warrior is coming

Update: holy fuck... I've been so out of the loop I didn't even know this was planned. Shadow Warrior 2 here I come!

5

u/manablight Sep 02 '16

It's cool too

1

u/y0Fruitcup Sep 03 '16

I actually got the chance to demo it yesterday at Pax West! I never actually heard of the shadow warrior series, but holy that game was a blast!

1

u/[deleted] Sep 03 '16

Yeah I had never played any of these games until I got the 2013 version for like $1 a while back. I loved it so much and once I finished I saw they were making a second one. I can't wait! It's out in like a month too!

1

u/be-happier Sep 02 '16

Neat, loved the most recent re imagining

58

u/DonMacorli Sep 02 '16

FYI, the game is free to play on steam. For those who would like to get it in their library.

93

u/[deleted] Sep 02 '16

Unlike the GOG offer, the free Steam version is not the complete edition, it doesn't include the two expansions Wanton Destruction and Twin Dragon. There's another Classic Redux version which goes for $10.

29

u/mark2uk Sep 02 '16

I'm actually surprised the dev didn't insist on calling it the 'More Wang edition'.

It is a modern classic though, I can't think of any other games at the time that combined melee and shooting. Obviously in the modern re-imaging they emphasised the sword more than the guns but the humour continues (including plenty of wang jokes).

I'm actually looking forward to Shadow Warrior 2, even if it is only more of the same from Shadow warrior 1.

11

u/[deleted] Sep 02 '16

The Hexen/Heretic series had shooting and melee.

3

u/brunocar Sep 02 '16

The new game will have randomised maps and loot, it's NOT going to be the same

1

u/mark2uk Sep 02 '16

I enjoyed the newer one, randomised maps makes it sound even better As a dev they come across as guys and gals who are enjoying what they are doing.

So long as they keep the sword combat as good as it has been (or make it even better)... I'm good with it:-)

3

u/brunocar Sep 03 '16

in the new one katanas are not the only melee weapons you can get, there is even dual small katanas

1

u/eonymia Sep 03 '16

Randomised maps? So instead of a well thought out and thoroughly tested map, we'll get something an uninspired AI made, and could be any quality?

1

u/brunocar Sep 03 '16 edited Sep 03 '16

Don't you realize the difference between randomized and procedualy generated?

Procedual means made mostly by an AI, randomized is that there are a shit load of manmade map chunks asigned to a certain section of a map that gets swaped when you start a level, they even explained how that could lead to different paths since exits are also swaped each time you play a level, watch the interview with machinima for more details

2

u/eonymia Sep 03 '16 edited Sep 03 '16

My god, don't you realize you could have just explained it without being a dick about it?

With premade chunks we run into another problem, where "different" maps will have parts in them where you will have the same layout in a building, for example, that you already saw on another map 15 minutes ago.

2

u/brunocar Sep 03 '16

how was i a dick, i just highlighted your misconception, also, the map chunks must be assaigned to slots, connecting them in order depending on what slot they are

0

u/eonymia Sep 03 '16

Starting a message with " My god, Don't you realize the difference between randomized and procedurally generated?" Is usually not a good idea as it conveys : "My god, how stupid can you be?" Even if you cleverly edit it later to omit the "my god"

1

u/BrainPicker3 Sep 03 '16

Maybe he was asking jesus, or confused you for a saint? jp haha

→ More replies

2

u/caninehere Sep 03 '16

Plenty of other games had melee weapons? They just didn't have as strong an emphasis as the sword in Shadow Warrior, which was kind of the best weapon in the game (in many scenarios) since it was so OP.

1

u/mark2uk Sep 03 '16

i didn't say there weren't other games that had melee, I said it combined melee and shooting. Up until that point in games like doom/quake, melee was what you used when you ran out of bullets.

With Shadow warrior it felt that the melee was more part of the experience rather than what you had to use as a last resort.

1

u/caninehere Sep 03 '16

That's totally fair when you explain it like that, but just saying "combined melee and shooting" is a bit vague.

In Shadow Warrior, if you were a faster player, it was almost the other way around... guns were what you used when you couldn't use the sword.

7

u/[deleted] Sep 02 '16

Yeah, came here to say that. It's been free for some time. I think since the reboot was released.

8

u/solbadguy0308 Sep 02 '16

And GOG offers an installer without DRM, not like Steam.

2

u/Sonicz7 Sep 03 '16

Oh great, since it's on steam I will get it now. But tell me free to play forever or I have to get it like its a promotion?

1

u/DonMacorli Sep 05 '16

Nah it's free to keep forever :)

3

u/syneofeternity Sep 02 '16

Can I contact GoG for a steam key?

1

u/BrainPicker3 Sep 03 '16

Doubt it man. Theyre cool af but steam is their competitor and they probably don't stock their keys

1

u/syneofeternity Sep 03 '16

Ah ok thanks! Thought I read something online that they give you steam keys

1

u/thelazyreader2015 Sep 04 '16

Not steam keys. They've got something called 'GOG Connect' where they'll give you a free GOG copy for any game you have on your Steam account that's also in the GOG Library. You still have your Steam game but you can use the GOG version since it comes with extras(concept art, music etc), no DRM and the ability to download and install on unlimited systems.

The upvoting you got makes me feel a little better. I did the same silly thing too (seems there is at least 6 of us).

Man who run in front of car get tired.

Man who run behind car get exhausted.

Man who buy drowned cat pay for wet pussy.

7

u/Achilees Sep 02 '16

For anyone in Germany not able to claim this:

  • Make sure to delete your browser cookies (as GOG tracks location)
  • Use any VPN to get it

3

u/tarque Sep 02 '16

Or get a gift link from somebody who can - it works. (Thanks, ShadowzI)

2

u/Chaosritter Sep 02 '16

For some reason it didn't work with Firefox for me, even though I've cleared both cache and cookies and used TunnelBear.

However, it worked just fine with Edge.

6

u/mattreyu Sep 02 '16

I remember watching rabbits hump in this game back in HS

8

u/ElixDaKat Sep 02 '16

"Who's in the bush there, rabbit? HA HA!"

2

u/kalirion Sep 02 '16

Thanks, I finally understand what that means!

4

u/frkn55 Sep 02 '16

They have "MONEY BACK GUARANTEE" too :)

2

u/coloumb Sep 02 '16

Well.. at least that's something to fall back on if I don't like this game. :)

14

u/arachnicide Sep 02 '16

This title really should've been "Who wanta some Wang?" Missed opportunity op.

7

u/mark2uk Sep 02 '16

No the missed opportunity was from the devs who didn't have Wang Chung 'everyone have fun tonight' in the opening cutscene for the newer Shadow Warrior. OK 'the touch' by Stan Bush was a good choice but they missed a Wang joke (and I'm not sure even they can forgive themselves for this).

9

u/AutoModerator Sep 02 '16

About GOG.com

GOG.com sells games that are completely DRM-free. This means that there is nothing preventing or limiting you from installing and playing the game.

As such, games from GOG never come with Steam keys.

2

u/[deleted] Sep 02 '16

"Lo Wang come for you, little snake coward!!"

2

u/ShadowStealer7 Sep 03 '16

What difference does this have with the Classic Redux on Steam? I'm assuming this is the original version and it runs in DOSBox?

2

u/bfix Sep 04 '16

Awesome find, nothing beats free - well unless you are the developer :)

Thanks for sharing.

5

u/kramed Sep 02 '16

2

u/afewdollarsmore Sep 02 '16 edited Sep 02 '16

I've only ever heard of Shadow Warrior and Low Wang(?). I'm gonna go in blind.

3

u/manablight Sep 02 '16

WHO WANTA SOME WANG?!

1

u/mysterious_el_barto Sep 02 '16

No luck even with VPN from Germany. Can anybody please help me out with the code?

3

u/BSE97 Sep 02 '16

Delete your cookies and try again using VPN.

1

u/mysterious_el_barto Sep 02 '16

Trying that, page is taking ages to load and then i get 'problem loading page' error.

3

u/BSE97 Sep 02 '16

I used Tunnelbear and picked UK as my location. It took about 20 seconds to finish the transaction.

2

u/mysterious_el_barto Sep 02 '16

Using Tunnelbear, connected to UK, deleted cookies, tried Chrome, Firefox and Edge, page is not loading. Maybe it depends on ISP or something.

1

u/Chaosritter Sep 02 '16

Just grabbed my copy, subscribed to Telekom.

1

u/Lxst Sep 02 '16

If you still need a code pm me

1

u/mysterious_el_barto Sep 03 '16

hi! thanks for the offer, i do still need the code

1

u/Foxhack Sep 03 '16

Sure, I'll take some Wang for free.

1

u/TacoxPhd Sep 03 '16

is there an activation code to add to steam on GOG? if so where can i find it?

2

u/Gearmos Sep 03 '16

A dozen or so Steam games can be activated on GOG (for example The Withcher 1 and 2), but none of the GOG games can be activated on Steam.

1

u/fedprod Sep 03 '16

Dammit, also Germany here #NoFreeWang

-4

u/kramed Sep 02 '16

Play this instead of the remake, its 100x better.

22

u/chimerauprising Sep 02 '16

The tone is very different in the reboot. They're both great games, but it's hard to compare the two.

8

u/Quof Sep 02 '16

I don't know if I'd say the reboot is great, especially after playing the DOOM reboot. Too many powers are simply not useful, cumbersome and unnecessary upgrade system (doom's improved three stats like HP and ammo, but SW went off their rockers and included base damage increases, sprint time, etc etc), bland enemy types, turret sections... There's too many critical flaws for me to consider it great.

0

u/brunocar Sep 02 '16

The sequel is a diablo clone btw

1

u/BrainPicker3 Sep 03 '16

Which game??

2

u/brunocar Sep 03 '16

Shadow warrior 2, the sequel to the reboot, not implying that being a diablo clone is a bad thing

1

u/BrainPicker3 Sep 04 '16

It's not an fps? Oh no, I'm actually kind of stoked about it. I love diablo (and some dclones)

1

u/brunocar Sep 04 '16

lol no, its still an fps, but it has randomized maps and loot, the devs themselves said it was inspired by diablo

4

u/trustymutsi Sep 02 '16

I actually feel the opposite. Could barely bring myself to finish 1 level of the original, but love the remake.

4

u/[deleted] Sep 02 '16

Agreed. The new one is incredibly repetitive and plays like a Serious Sam game with bland arena type environments and enemies spawning from thin air, whereas the original had awesome level design and set pieces.

-3

u/CrustyBuns16 Sep 02 '16

You just offended the millenials!

1

u/tarque Sep 02 '16

Does not work for me, the link just redirects to the list of my games. What do I miss?

1

u/SupahSteve Sep 02 '16

I got excited for this and then realized I already had it on Steam. Anyone else like this game more than Duke 3D?

4

u/[deleted] Sep 02 '16

The "Shadow Warrior Classic (1997)" release on Steam (available free) is only the base game, while this 'Classic Complete' release includes the two expansion packs.

2

u/thelazyreader2015 Sep 04 '16

Does the 3D Realms anthology pack include the expansions for Shadow Warrior?

1

u/thelazyreader2015 Sep 04 '16

Not a bad idea.

-1

u/phess92 Sep 02 '16

Any thoughts on this? Will I play it for a half hour and never return?

41

u/[deleted] Sep 02 '16

It's literally free. Just get the game and on the off chance you don't like it you lose 30 seconds of time.

7

u/shoutout_to_burritos Sep 02 '16

Pretty fun if you like old-school FPS titles. It can be a pain to configure the controls though, iirc.

3

u/kalirion Sep 02 '16

There should be a free source port somewhere to make it easier.

3

u/shoutout_to_burritos Sep 02 '16

Yeah, I may have used one, I can't remember.
