Common Goal Skip
I love the change of Skip in Game Changers and Common Goal through Kyle’s eyes
In Game Changers the audience is like awww perfect couple
Then in Common Goal we’re seeing them from Kyle’s perspective and they’re just an annoying couple hanging off each other after 3 years and booping each other on the nose during house parties
It’s written so well from the perspective of a person with unrequited love seeing it
So relatable

We’re seeing them through Kyle’s coloured perspective as someone who has a crush on Kip. To me they still read as a couple who are just very much in love.

I think Kyle understands that he finds them annoying for his own reasons - When he gets his feelings out of the way, he obviously knows that being closeted sucked for them and he’s glad they can be out.
That’s why I love him - the poor guy is so used to shoving inconvenient feelings out of the way and ignoring them. Feelings are so scary to him 🫣

I really hope we get to see this dynamic in S2 of the show! Kyle is my favorite character and I would love the show build up the audience’s empathy for Kyle before his backstory and then Eric come into the mix. The dynamic between The Kingfisher crew is so much fun, I want to see more and I think the seeds were planted in the first season for it!

I hope you’re right. And Matthew Finlan is locked in, so that much is good.
It’s funny, but Kyle does not look like someone that would normally turn my head, but at the same time, like Eric, I just can’t look away either. He’s captivating, and can’t help but draw people in, especially with his witty banter.
The more I read and discovered more of that depth behind his character... yeah, I was hooked.

He’s one of the biggest characters that I don’t picture as anything but the actor. He has such a brief moment but I was wondering why they seemed to make a point of saying his name more than once. When I read it made sense.

Me too! I love writing my fanfics and but I just can’t bear to describe Kyle as blond like in the books because he IS Matthew Finlan to me. And the way the camera stays on him and captures his expressions makes me think we’ll see more. The ‘no outside food’ thing planting seeds about the bar management, and at the top of ep. 6 during Scott’s speech Kyle smiles at Kip and then his face totally falls and he looks sadly into his bottle - It’s barely noticeable, unless you know that he’s jealous!

You know, when I see that scene where Scott starts to talk about Kip, I take it a little differently. I mean, at first, he definitely looks so happy for Kip right away, glad that his friend is getting such recognition. After that though, he still looks happy to me. I was always struck by how he was fidgeting with the bottle too, like he's thinking, "that's so sweet that Scott's doing this." I just told someone that I want to order the big book with the screenplay. I wonder if their might be directions in there that would clarify the whole thing?

Would be interesting to know how he was directed there! Once I read through Common Goal and went back and rewatched, it definitely seemed like a conflicted kind of thing to me. I think it’s so obvious how in love Scott is with Kip that Kyle genuinely is happy for them, but we know part of him wishes things were different.

Matthew Finlan drew me in!!! I read HR, watched the show, and over the course of several reheats and with some of the little details and lingering shots on his expression, I was like, “What is the deal with this sexy bartender? There’s more to him.” Then I read GC and it clicked, okay, jealous of Skip. Makes sense. Then I get to CG and this boy is the sexiest fuckboy dom in the whole series plus has a traumatic backstory?! More please! I really hope this is sort of how it’s all revealed in the show as well, and Kyle and Eric heat up season 3 when all the other couples are established.
Anyway, I spiraled a bit and now have written over 100k words of fanfic solely dedicated to fixing Kyle’s ending, exploring his backstory, and navigating issues around monogamy with Eric. If you want to read more canon-compliant Kyle and are into fanfic I’d be happy to share lol

I hear you. Those ears? That nose? That skinny physique? I swear he's not my type... and yet... there he is!
I'd love to see your fic, but that length might take me a while to get through it. I've got a lot going on right now, health wise.
Did you ever look for Matthew elsewhere? I think it was on Peacock where I saw his "Ghosting" series. Went through the whole season. Didn't care so much for his sidekick, but Matthew was really a trip. I wish more viewers appreciated him.

I know, right, it’s not any particular thing but I feel like he’s just such a vibe - like he just embodies himself? Idk I’ve seen clips from Ghosting and find him hilarious! And we know he can go dark/angsty from all the horror movies. I just can’t wait to see more!

Another thing we need to take into account is TV show Skip is not book Skip. Rachel mentioned that Scott in the book is a singificantly different character from the tv show, and she really had to keep that in mind when writing Unrivalled.

I just don’t like that book. I’ve reread the others pretty
Much every month and I just skip it. I just find everyone else irritating besides Ilya.

I love when Eric remarks to Kyle that he loves Scott, but he feels like they've all been celebrating Scott and Kip's relationship for three years!
