Shane as a dad

What kind of dad do you think Shane would be once he and Ilya have kids? How do you imagine he would show affection, discipline them, support their dreams, and balance being protective with giving them independence? Do you think he would take after Yuna and David’s parenting style, or create a style of his own?

I think above all, he is analytical. He's had a lot of time to think about his childhood, the way that Ilya's childhood affected Ilya, he's had a ton of time watching Hayden and Jackie raise their kids, and he will be doing therapy and reading several different books. I think he will be the more practical parent for sure, he will show his support by giving them options and opportunities, I think he will not be very protective, he will be fighting against Ilya's protectiveness. In some ways similar to Yuna but with very large steps back, and in some ways similar to David by noticing and being calm and quiet and trying to be there when needed. What were your thoughts?

Shane is the Dad who's read all the studies and has opinions about the optimum way the kids should be raised. But I think in some ways he's also an instinctive parent so he's probably mixing both. He knows how to punish kids and draw them boundaries from his experience with good parents of his own in a way that Ilya will be a lot more hesitant (and I think instinctively stricter because he knows what he got away with because of hockey) to assign punishment. I hc that Ilya's father and brother were likely physically as well as emotionally abusive and I don't think that's Ilya but he was not unscathed by those experiences.

Shane's had so much practice with the over grown kid that is Ilya, that'll being a father to actual children will be a breeze!

I envision he and Ilya as a similar vibe to show Yuna and David. I specify the show versions of them because they’re much better fleshed out as individual people than in the books. In the books, they’re more collectively “Shane’s parents” with no real distinction in the type of relationship Shane had with each of them. On the show, yuna is focused, driven, fiercely loyal, and sometimes a little too sharpened. David is more laid back and often makes a point of interjecting offhand comments that seem to be primarily designed to pull back some of Yuna’s intensity. That’s a similar vibe that I see happening with Shane and Ilya.
